  1. I think its bad to keep angels and discus together I know people do it, but I think angels have internal parasites that they are resistant too but the discus aren't.. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.. Also I think angels are more aggressive and would probably out eat a discus..
  2. Do you have any catfish or anything in there? I don't think the mbuna will munch away at the brown algae, your red top should though because thats what they're designed to do.. It shouldn't affect anything just look ugly (some would say it looks natural) its over to you really..
  3. You should find it easy to find a male if you did want one most people are looking for females
  4. Id say 4x1 would be strong enough provided you used it so the load was bearing through the 4" section (if you know what I mean) and braced it..
  5. A qtine tank may not have helped with whitespot because it can be caused by stress and may surface in the qtine tank and then again when you move to the tank you want it in.. But it is a good idea for other things.. As for treatment ive used the wonder whitespot cure temp and salt to treat clown loaches.. See if the temp and aeration works first and go from there
  6. Very nice looking fish and tank congrats Watch all the zebra's mixing and the potential for hybrids/aggression, have known a few people who got rid of ice blues out of 6ft tanks because they destroyed everything.. However you only have mbuna so you might be lucky.. Demasoni, they are generally only nasty to their own type mine are little pussy cats even when breeding to every other fish but if any other other demasoni come near watch out!
  7. They will generally spawn in one place, they may be digging under the other one to make a hole to move the babies too Congrats you will soon have more of these than you know what to do with! Any pics yet?
  8. Awesome are they from the pair you just got?
  9. yeah I had them in a vegebin/breeding container I use to grow out little fish before I shipped them, would probably keep them in 2ft until around 2-3cm's, you will know when to move them judging by how argo they are to each other.. They're pretty good at hunting for food after a few weeks but will grow faster if in a smaller one and you pump food into them.. Dixon, sorry to hear shipping is too expensive for you, bear in mind I could ship 24 in the $30 I quoted you for shipping so you could get it cheaper if you found someone else who wanted some in Chch (im actually shipping some down there when they're ready), im sure someone down there is breeding them though, id seriously recommend you do invest in more than 12 of them no matter how poor you are any less and its most likely end up in dead fish.. Good luck!
  10. Man they look like they've grown well How big are they now? What are you feeding them? They look good, are you getting any good scraps going on? Cheers for the plug going to have alot of these spare soon got 4 females holding at the moment and 17 babies just swimming, one of my favorite fish thats for sure..
  11. Looking good Stu, what strain of cockatoo's did you breed?
  12. I do it lol but unsure if its bad for the pump or not
  13. If you did decide to do demasoni let me know I will have a heap and we are planning a trip to wellington in the future Heres some reading for you, the main thing to remember with demasoni is to have at least 12 they have a rep for being nasty but it is only when people house less than 12 they do any damage.. I did try and get less and they wiped each other out. http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/p_demasoni.php http://www.cichlid-forum.com/phpBB/view ... p?t=155356 http://www.cichlid-forum.com/phpBB/view ... t=demasoni http://www.cichlid-forum.com/phpBB/view ... t=demasoni http://www.cichlid-forum.com/phpBB/view ... t=demasoni

  15. For those that don't get the monster fish keeping emails.. http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forum ... hp?t=95984 Actually really surprised at the number of votes the photo of the electric yellows is getting..
  16. You could do demasoni 29gal is about 100litres.. http://www.cichlid-forum.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t =154128&highlight=demasoni Or you could do a pair of pulcher or jullies or something like that, when I get around to it ill have my pair of Jullies on one side of a divided 100litres tank and a pair of pulchers (depending on how they get on when they eventually grow up) on the other..
  17. Just read this reply, don't keep zebra's in a tank that small.. Well you could but I wouldn't stick anything but zebra's in there and expect some to get beaten!
  18. I feed decap brine shrimp to all of my little fish as part of a mixed died.. I think everything should be kept in moderation, you definitely get good growth rates with brineshrimp if I could be bothered id hatch it too
  19. I got rid of some (when I wanted it to grow lol) by using a huge ass hang on the back filter (box says its designed for 150gal tank) on a 2ft tank it stirred things up so much it all got sucked up the filter

    new tank

    Should be good man
  21. If you did want it to look nice ive brought almost enough tongue and groove rimu off trade me to clad a 5ft tank stand for around $50.. Just look for stuff thats been recycled from old houses etc..
  22. Guess it would be very hard because you wont know the definite parents genetics back say x generations..
  23. Any of them CAN cross breed but if you provide enough females for the males will they? Its upto you if your willing to risk it, from a breeding point of view I breed in species tanks but alot of people breed in mixed tanks. Heres some reading for you.. http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/m ... acocks.php http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/compatibility.php When you came out I thought I had read an article that you could keep them together if you had enough females but it was the top one.
  24. lol if its too long its resistance will increase and you will get losses too
