  1. Kai is food and moana is the sea or a large lake. We have a lovely spot up the coast from here (cut off by a slip over the road caused by the earthquakes at the moment) called Kaikoura and koura is crayfish. Pretty fished out now but very plentiful when I was a kid (not baby goat)
  2. Why would you need a basking light if they are nocturnal?
  3. We are winding down and getting a bit more use to it all. Should be all over by xmas.
  4. My point was that there is no point in having high light unless you have all the requirements for rapid growth. H. polysperma will go nuts in a high light aqarium which has sufficient nutrient as well. Glosso needs lots of light and riccia will block the light.
  5. Keeping the water chemistry right in a high light tank that small will be a bit of a challenge.
  6. What is right is what works for you and your pet.
  7. It never rains--it pours. My partner decided to go for a ride on her electric assisted bike to wind down, get some wind in the face and relax a bit. For those that know the area, she was going up Stanmore Rd coming up to the new traffic lights outside the garage (why they were put in I have no idea). The lights are green so she proceeded through and a young guy about 12 steps out in front of her pushing his bike over the crossing against the lights. She piles into him and cans off, getting even more shell shocked than she was and with a lot more bruises. His sister comes along and explains that he is from Bulgaria and doesn't understand how the lights work (go figure). The bike is a Chinese import and a rightoff. Back to square one.
  8. Fungus is usually an oportunistic infection following a wound which has become bacterially infected and normally requires an antibiotic as well.
  9. We all have different value systems.
  10. A couple of my neighbours are whitebaiters and used to drop live fish off for the turtles when available. They were smelts and grey whitebait (the ones with a grey belly that have started feeding). The turtles loved them. I guess if it is OK to eat them it is OK for our pets as well. If it makes anyone feel better I no longer have turtles. I would have fed them trout but they were too big and they were keeping them for themselves. If this doesn't make sense it may be because the ground keeps moving as I type.
  11. Looks like columnarus which is a bacteria and needs treating with an antibiotic. I would use furan2 as it can be obtained from the petshop and does not require a visit to the vet and a prescription.
  12. We are stressed out enough and we were part of the lucky ones without much damage. I would make a run for it but there are advantages and disadvantages with trying to keep a zoo at home.
  13. I can confirm that it is a pretty cool batch in a pretty cool location. I stayed there with Barrie during the conference up that way. Ideal for kaimoana lovers. Go Canterbury. Not sure where it is going at the moment--feels like all over.
  14. You would have to be Irish to come to Chritchurch at the moment. That would be right against the flow of traffic I would have thought.
  15. A pretty quiet night last night---long may it last. No longer need to boil water.
  16. If the water is available it will be OK if chlorinated, left standing , them neutralized. I have a kilo of sodium thiosulphate if anyone needs to neutralize a lot of chlorine. Just had another wee one
  17. I lied. It was the worst aftershock so far were we are. It was short and very sharp for us but others are saying it went on for a long time. It depends on your location and probably depends on the substrata. We could do with a bit of a rest from this but the problem is that if you have a long spell with little activity you start wondering if it is saving up the energy for another big one.
  18. The local pet shop put a sign up saying that they repair tanks. I went past the other day and someone was walking out of the shop with a tank that didn't seem to have a complete panel on it. They obviously don't repair tanks on a complete rebuild basis. I have to admit that it was a stainless steel angle iron framed tank. There does seem to be a lot of broken tanks around---we were very lucky. Even my lizards seem to be acting normally--as normal as a hyperactive madly scratching--want to lay eggs female beardie can be. A few shakes last night but not as frequent or strong as they have been.
  19. Three good ones last night before 11.30 then a cracker at 3.30. Only drizzle at the moment and the house is waterproof so grateful that we are the lucky ones so far.
  20. Forget the light. I am told it likes water.
  21. Nice to see a reasoned discussion taking place. We will all learn something. Now they just have to work out how to stop earthquakes.

    Hi from qtwn

Welcome. There are a few reptile keepers on this site.
  23. There seems to be a direct relationship between how it feels and the substrata beneath your location.
