  1. Once the container is opened it should be kept in the fridge to maintain a good hatch rate.
  2. Jager heaters are very good heaters and I like them because they can be easily reset to the temperature you want. As the man says---A one hundred watt heater will use the same amount of power no matter the make so they will not save power even though they may save other heartbreak. Heavy insulation and lower temperatures is the best way.
  3. Copper will not kill neon tetra disease. To the best of my knowledge it is not curable but can be held back with formaldehyde. Are you sure that is the problem?
  4. Doesn't look like my emersed glosso but have no idea what it is. As for growing it with frogs---try and see then report back
  5. I have just bought a replacement solenoid at $170

    Kia Ora.

    Enjoy your time here.
  7. I had 9 aviaries full of breeding lovebirds at one time and they will build their own nests if you chuck bits of broom on the floor of the aviery. I have tried small lengths of weeping willow as well but the broom seemed to be prefered.
  8. I started out using the dimmers on trademe but they don't maintain the teperature so I switched to the proper thermostats and have been happy with them since. They are on heat emitters and control the air temperature in the hot end of the enclosures.
  9. Hope you enjoy your time here.
  10. I used fresh broom cuttings, they help keep the nest moist as well. Keep a bowl of water handy and they will bath in it if the nest needs more moisture. Leave room on top of the nest box, that is usually where they mate and that will be a chance to see if you have a male.
  11. Heat pads and heat rocks cannot have the heat controlled unless the thermostat is in contact with them. They generally rely on a low power input to keep the temperature down so if the location is well insulated or the background temperature is very warm they will get very hot. This is why you may need to use different sized bulbs at different times of the year if you are using them to heat insect breading setups.
  12. Copper has been used to treat parasites in fresh water tanks since great grandad figured out how to keep fish. Mostly use chelated copper sulphate these days but in the good old days a penny or copper shavings were added until the snails crawled out of the water. Copper is toxic and deadly to some fish but is an ideal cure for velvet when other chemicals fail. Like many treatments it causes temporary sterility.
  13. Heated rocks will still overheat unless the thermostat probe is on the rock. Otherwise it is like a heat emitter that switches off when the air gets to the set temperature. You wouldn't want your reptile sitting on a heat emitter.
  14. Vallisneria gigantea is giant as the name suggests and spiralis is possibly the one in the picture. The leaves are straight but the flower stem spirals.
  15. Straight Vallisneria is an unwanted organism. Similar but legal plants might be twisted Vallisneria (contortionist or torta), Sagittaria subulata or Echinodorus uraguayensis.
  16. Agree with above. I get mine there and I know a few more on here who do also.
  17. I use potting mix to grow the plants and put fine gravel on top to keep the frogs away from it. The biggest problem is to get enough light to grow most plants. I find miniature figs do well, as does spanish or xmas moss and hydrocotyle.
  18. As far as I am aware there are two twisted types available and they do go under different names sometimes. Vallisneria torta is the wider and shorter leafed variety and contortionist is the taller, narrow leafed variety. Both are legal, have more briddle leaves than the straight varieties and do not tolerate flourish excel.

  20. If the undergravel filter is working properly the gunge should be on top of the gravel not under it.
  21. I have just started CO2 on a tank and the pH starts at about 7.2 to 7.4 in the morning and ends at about 6.2 to 6.4 by the time the lights go off and all is well.
