whats this green fern-type muck? was on coral when i got it, i think my tang eats it, as it seems to come and go. it isnt on any of the other corals/rock i got from the same guy's tank.... shall i incinerate it? or is there a way to treat this if needed. i can set up a quarantine tank if i absolutely have to....
  4. i had some in a cold[ish] water tank, they lasted a fair while, but i think the heat got most of them in the end. the couple that were left i released back to takapuna when i decommissioned the tank.
  5. i have a few diff types, some seem to like strong current more than others - the bigger ones i have wont open properly if its too strong, and the smaller ones in the same position seem to love it.
  6. didnt someone else have this problem a little while ago? did autopsy etc
  7. i had three of these, which i modified into 1 - by taking the bottom off two of them and stacking them, with pumps into the top two inlets, and the lowest one blocked. it was still s**t, but better than nothing i guess. if you are going to use it, get the gruntiest pump you can for it. i was using a via aqua 2600 and a 4900 on my modified one, and it [wet] skimmed a little bit.
  8. some fly screen would be good, as long as it doesent block much light. i run lids on at the mo, as i [still] dont have rodi filter, so cant keep up with evaporation
  9. yeah i need a chiller. more $$$ :-?
  10. or neither was a good opportunity for my tank to cool down from 28.7 degrees :-? and test the dont-flood-my-house plumbing

    power cut

anyone else have a power cut last night? my place [grafton, auckland] was out for around 2 hours at some stage last night. my well-plumbed tank is fine though
  12. can you use silicon underwater? will it not poison the tank?
  13. heheheheh thats some james bond business right there
  14. apparently they only live a couple of years. would love to keep them, have seen 2 foot accross live ones for sale [as food for about $80 ] at the new fish markets in AK. supposed to be a right pain in the (x) to keep though.

  16. i think i had a similiar prob. looked like bleaching, starting from one spot, but there were tiny [=1mm] critters on the underside of the affected area. is this the same thing?

    rodi

ira, the salinity of seawater in NZ is higher than it is in the places where most corals & fish have evolved. not quite sure of the science behind this one, think its something to do with the temperature. no doubt after this reply someone will let us all know cookie, i was there twice today 10.30 and 12.30. got 720 litres! ill sleep well tonight.....

or could i get away with using dechlorinated ak tap water? [id rather not]

    rodi

is anyone in auckland able to donate / sell / whatever me about 60 litres of rodi water? need to water down about 700l of NSW to get salinity right, and cant distill this much water quickly.... "the soup is too salty"
  20. i have a yellow eye tang. almost constsantly chewing on rocks, i never seem to have any algae in tank now, and my water isnt perfect by any means.....
  21. modern plastics, near victoria park market, ak central
  22. none of the stuff i got from him seems to have it [touch wood]. not sure what it is, but it wouldnt look pretty spread all over your tank. i'd remove as much as poss, and maybe try to find a fish that eats it
  23. i had my ap850 plumbed straight from the overflow. was basically impossible to get a constant water level in the skimmer, and once or twice the water actually raised enough to almost fill the collection cup with tank water. the safest / easiest option would be to have a seperate feed pump for the skimmer, in the same sump compartment as the overflow return pipe. at least you know it will be constant.
