  1. yeah was only $25 on trademe... seems all good, about same flexibility / hard-to-cutness etc as perspex.
  2. he must be displacing like 80 litres of water, plus all the dirt & hair going into the tank.... this has got to be a stunt for the camera, surely no one would do this reglarly to their own tank....
  3. lolz surely he could have done that from outside the tank, looks like hes just vacuuming

    Massive crab

omg that video! anyone seen aliens where the half human alien gets sucked into space? exactly the same
  5. can anyone see a reason not to use 10mm polycarbonate (lexan) as an overflow, as opposed to glass / perspex? hope not, ive already installed it
  6. nice..... looks quite big - what size is it?
  7. its easy to do youreslf. i just did a 34mm and a 42mm hole in 12mm glass on my built tank. used these bits - http://www.trademe.co.nz/structure/auction_detail.asp?id=42723214 cut through in about 20-30 seconds, no dramas.
  8. even a $20 webcam would be fine - http://www.xpcomputers.co.nz/index.php?cPath=45 so long as you can host the file somewhere.... i think alot of them come with software to view cam remotely. even though the pic quality would be quite s**t, you could check water levels, lighting, etc. im going to get the cam from the above link today, ill post up results & a link to the stream
  9. may pay to wait until the tank is cycled and relatively stable before adding corals. anemones are even more sensitive to changes in water conditions. need to make sure you have enough lighting as well. i would go for a fish or two first, something quite hardy that eats algae would be good. i have a yellow eye cole tang that eats alot of algae. an advantage of having a herbivorous fish is that its food will foul the water less than meat-based foods, which will be important initially while your tank stabilises.
  10. does anyone have an opinion on glass vs. perspex for overflow box? wouldnt go for perspex thinner than 10mm...

    best salt

what is the best salt to use? instant ocean or other? how reckless is it to use straight auckland tapwater to mix it? im setting up a 680l tank, trying to avoid doing 5 trips to takapuna for NSW. (only have 7x 20l buckets)
  13. mitre 10 mega stocks hansen tank fittings (bulkheads) at 15 20 25 32 40 50mm, and all other plumbing stuff you will need. bunnings i think are a bit cheaper but dont have quite the range mitre 10 mega do.. not sure if either of these are in your area...... http://www.hansenproducts.co.nz/
  14. if you can deal with the heat somehow and get the right k bulbs, they should be ok.
  15. reef is selling some coral food in trade&exch...................
  16. cracker what are the alternatives to durso? i like quiet LB is this for a marine or FW setup? FW would require less flow than marine
  17. any decent size return pump will do, depending on the desired flow rate - via aqua / eheim / laguna etc. the sump level is regulated by only having one pump, from the sump to the display, and installing an overflow box. most peoble have this setup. you would need to drill the tank and get a (hansen) tank fitting, and a standpipe. read up on the "durso standpipe" (you could just drill the tank bottom and have a standpipe without an overflow, like jansens mt eden coral display tank)
  18. its going to seem really weird when it comes out that wasp and lduncan are the same person........
  19. cant beat the price of the livestock i had a small rockpool tank set up for about 6 months, but the heat was the main problem. had a couple of gobies, heaps of crabs & glass shrimps, some diff. anemones, snails, etc. just used sand & rock from takapuna i released everything in it at the start of summer, as tank was hitting 25 deg. also, those critters are used to 2x full water changes per day...
  20. not sure, something a mate was carving up at AUT marine bio. lab.
  21. not needing to mount them underwater, just aboue the tank pointing down.
