Yes i will today, thats it for me on this topic.

Very good point Layton, Like we have been saying its ok most times but how do you know when it is not. Whilst ASW is not perfect atleast you are not adding bacteria like Enterococci. More likley if you live up north or in very remote areas the water will be far safer.
-
They test water in nz also due to enterococci. Nothing bizzare about it, what do you think we have a coral reef so they can go and test coral? what the data shows is that there is a effect on corals and goes hand in hand with problems hobbyist have had but have blamed other issues and have not even thought that the problem could have come form the NSW. I doubt a ammonia spike is going to kill your corals as it effects fish more than corals. I know someone who works in a lab and you will be surprised how much contaminates there are in NSW in certain area that hobbyist think are clean water. sorry bluetom for spoiling your thread should get the mods to split it.

Enterococci which is tested by city councils around NZ. that was 2003, wonder how bad the water is now after 4 years and population explosion in Auckland.

Here are a few pics of my discus, so hard to take pics but here are a few good ones. I have more nice discus but cant get a decent pic of them. How about getting some pics up, There must be more nice discus around.

swirl for 5 sec, if it stays then thats the result.

Yes, NSW contains lots of bacteria and nutrients. But depends where you collect. not great if it is in a built up area with sewer going into the sea.
-
yes, last post was in 2006 sometime. long one month ban.

Yes sure stay over, we also have a tropical rain forest discus tank so you can take the great barrier tour or the tropical rain forest.

Nice small tank. I wonder how many fish jump out of that tank. manderine/goby would dice with death in that tank.

They are good skimmers and are not as expensive as some people make out. For a small tank you can get the deltec mce300 which ill cost you around $500. Might seem much but if it saves you 3-4 fish it will pay for itself already. I do have a bit of a bias as i have been importing Deltec for over 8 years and if there where better skimmers i would use them. Smaller tanks are not low maintenance as there is not much margin for error so you have to keep an eye on them all the time, Maintence on a tank will depend on water quality. If you keep the tank with very low nutrients then things will stay cleaner, however it is also advisable to get a water filter like ro or di unit however that will set you back another $200 or so. Tap water contains a lot of minerals. So by not using a filter you will be adding them to your tank thus the algae will use it to grow ,

It is in the lounge, It has a steel frame which is covered in pine. No structural work done on the floor as it is sitting on a concrete.

To be honest, i would do lots of reading before getting into marines as it is expensive and the livestock is not as hardy as freshwater fish. I see so many hobbyists start up cheap and things just turn out to cost so much more. Also smaller tanks like 100L is not easy to look after as the small volume of water does not allow much margin for error. Also in summer things heat up very easy. Too get a decent set up without livestock you are looking at min $2k for a 3-4ft tank. My opinion is going cheap is not a option as the livestock will suffer and they are getting scarcer every year, i beleive the marines will change dramatically over the next 5 years and it just cant go on with the way the reefs are being damaged by over collection. Marines need very good water quality so getting good equipment is very important, I am afraid the cheap weipro skimmers just don’t cut it. Well that is my opinion however I suspect you will get many others. Have you looked at the red seas max tanks, they come with everything except livestock/rock . Will set you back $2k but at least you will have a complete set up. http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/april- ... 20049.html

take it back to the store you got it from. they should be able to fix it.
-
did not see that you had a skimmer, but the seaclone is not up to it, cheap and nasty. might be for a 50L tank. You really dont need metal halide, t5s will be more than enough to keep hard corals. You can get the hagen glow ballast and end caps and put them in your hood.
-
What type of hard corals, i would be surprised Stores dont have hard coral, it could be just timing as stock comes in all the time. To me overflow boxes are too risky unless drilled in. Why do you need a sump? i noticed you did not mention protein skimmer which is the most important part in having a marine tank. Get a hang on skimmer. and dont go cheap as water quality is very important . No need to add any fish when cycling just add some fish food evert few day and get a starter bacteria . Hollywoods have a product called startup by prodibio which has live bacteria. Adding fish to cycle a tank is cruel and not required , you can add fish ater say 8 weeks. If you want hard coral you will have to get much better lighting. Get some t5s, hagen have twin t5s called hagen glo. get two so you will have 4 bulbs. should be able to keep most corals with that lighting set up. One word of advice, DONT rush. take your time seeting up the tank , you will have much better results.

its my calcium reactor. the co2 goes into a venturi thus causing bubbles. All schuran reactors work this way
-
The main LFS sell Tunze coral stick, Deltec coral putty . both are a nice purple colour,

i did this that hench my question. my tank calicum level was 350ppm and coming out of my calcium reactor it was 210ppm
