  1. Maybe it could have these sections.
  2. FNZAS i looking at updating the site soon and they might redo the saltwater section due to the ever increasing membership. What sections do you think we should have? Keep in mind that the Reef scene in NZ is very small and having to many sections is a waste of time as they hardly get used and 10% of member’s post 90% of the posts. FNZAS has over 2500 members and only about 10% would be posting in the saltwater section. I am in favour of a steam line version of reef central and FNZAS has a big advantage as they could combine some sections with freshwater like DIY. Not sure myself what sections to have. Any ideas? what would make this site even better?

    New Tank

Good idea is to pre mix salt and let it settle for a few days before using it. heat it up. Best to use 1/2 old water and 1/2 new. redsea salt is fine.

    New Tank

welcome From the freshwater side to the reef side Not far to travel to find the best Marine site. Here are some links that might help, also read thru all the posts as their are many. http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/1-vt23038.html?start=0 http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/newbie ... 23185.html http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/1-vt22916.html?start=0 The main test kits you will need is. Calcium nitrate Kh phostphate magnesium ammonium nitrite iodine test is nice to have but not important at this stage, get a refractometer to measure salinity. Most reefers use Salifert test kits. Hollywood fish farm over the shore should be able to help with your set up. When moving the rocks i would just put them in newspaper and place in new tank with new salt water. Let the tank settle for a few weeks and test to make sure you have no ammonium and nitrite. Any questions just ask as all the expert reefers pop in most of the time.
  6. I would not put a sixline in a small tank. They can be very domineering with small fish.

    My next skimmer

Hopefully looking at a 4000-5000L tank end of next year. The deltec ap2602 is a little to big as it is 2.6m high. cost about $15000 I think deltec make a 1.6M skimmer . might be a better choice as it will fit in the house.
  8. i Found the sixlines eat all the small snails,
  9. Because auckland university got them in does not make them legal as they can only go to a containment facility and you need permits.

    My next skimmer

Looking at my next upgrade. pic of skimmer i have been thinking of getting Deltec ap2602 for 25000L tank 2.6M high. 880W pump.
  11. Any thing is doable, But stuff up and you will lose everything in the tank.
  12. And then you look at their tank which tells you alot. Just like the All blacks, everyone is a expert on who they should pick for the team. Comes down to performace and results.

    Hi everyone

Welcome Tui to the main marine site
  14. To start of with such a small tank is not a good idea. Water volume is so small that any small changes will have a big effect on water quality. I would look at starting off with a 3ft tank. two clowns and a anemoe would be great. you could start off with leather corals. Most common salt used is red sea. not the best salt but it will be fine, i use it on all my tanks. temp between 24-26c is fine. A good protein skimmer is pretty important as it will remove waste quicker and solve long term problems of build up of waste. What is your budget $? I would look at about $2000 Min to get a decent set up. things you will need with aprx price. heater $30 protein skimmer $500 rock $100 salt $50 lights $300 test kits $120 fish food $30 timers $30 coral sand $50 powerhead for water movement $100 fish $200 corals $800 temp $15 salinity meter $100 for a good one. tank /stand ??? as you can see it add ups. Best to get the set up correct at the start as it will save you money in the long run, so many hobbyist upgrade once they get the reef bug and it ends up costing them so much more because they tried to do it on the cheap from day one.
  15. markoshark wrote Because Maf dont approve the allowable fish, It has to be approved by ERMA, No one has every added new fish on the allowable list. And that is because it cost money which makes it hard to recover. It can take many years to add new fish to the allowable list which has just been reduced by over 50%. as all fish have been reduced from genus to species. You got the wrong department. need to get fish approved thru Erma first and can take over 3 years. www.erma.govt.nz Maf only enforce the law,

    New Tank Set-up

very nice photos. how do you get the black background? i have photoshop and i cant work out how the black backgrounds are created.
  17. Great tanks. all look so clean, and they have sand
  18. If you dont have the correct salt the fish may get stressed which could lead to diseases. what you need to do it check the salinity also to make sure that it is correct. do a big 50% water change with the correct salt and see if things get better.
  19. Not a good idea to use rock salt. best to go back and use the red sea salt as it contains buffer/minerals.
  20. Name FEDERATION OF NEW ZEALAND AQUATIC SOCIETIES INC Incorporated 27-OCT-1960 Wow that is a long time, Reading the finanacial accounts over the last 6-7yrs make interesting reading? had some really bad years. Any history that you can share Warren.
  21. nice overflow box, i will be looking to do the same oneday. Nano stream would be far better as the scwd will really cut your flow rate, especially when it gets dirty. But then again might be too much flow.
  22. Yes it does. aqualine buschke.
  23. Just did a test on my bulbs and they have really dimmed in the last 8 months. pays to check as they can really drop off.
  24. http://www.reeflightinginfo.arvixe.com/index.htm Been using this site to check what metal halide bulbs to get and found it very useful. Amazing how some 150w metal halide bulbs are brighter than some crap quality 400w bulbs. Pays to get the quality of the bulbs as so many of the cheap bulbs are real rubbish.
