    Reefs Reef Tank

Thanks davdb, yes the colours are really improving all the time. Whilst they have been pretty good in the past , i put the improvement down to keeping a eye on the cal/kh levels. Keeping these levels up is not easy due to the amount of hard coral. I have to run my calcium reactor 24/7 , still testing to see how i cant keep these levels up.
  2. Intersting chart showing temperature on a reef in Fiji My tank goes from say 79F in winter and 84F in summer.

    cleaning coral

put it in bleach for a few hours then wash with fresh water. should be all nice and clean
  4. You don’t need a skimmer for any tank, however giving the animals the best water quality we see them doing much better as the skimmer will remove organics from the water. Keeping a 50ltr tank is not easy as with such small water quantity the parameters can change really quickly, especially in summer with the hot temperatures.

    Going BIG

Butterflys tank was made by the staff and owner. They did have a small problem as it started to leak, but it stopped by itself. here are some pics
  7. Not all compaines, only the ones that have cheap skimmers so it makes them look like a bargain compared to the real quality skimmers. You have many options like a sump skimmer or a hangon skimmer, But get the best skimmer you can afford as it might cost more now but you will save money in the long run as you will not have to upgrade like most of the Hobbyist.
  8. Firefish will not do well with tangs as they are very shy fish.
  9. Using NSW will help speed up the cycle as it will have live bacteria however dont rush to get stock in early as this is where so many hobbyist have problems. Maybe it would be best to get a big bin now and add dry rock and fill with saltwater and add a small airpump. This way you can just let the rocks cycle and work on getting your main tank setup and gives you aa chance to woke on the tank without having water going all over the place. After say six weeks move the rock in the bin to your maintank and afetr about another 2 weeks you should be ready for some stock.

    does this...

thats is normal. they can close for a week and then shead skin. normally they come back bigger. That is why you need lots of current so they can remove the sheaded skin. Looks like it is lookig ok.
  15. It will be a Yellow tang that is deformed. They are rare.

    FISH importing

Here is an interesting link to a study done in Australia on diseases. Looks like some changers will come out of it which will also impact on our imported fish. No doubt fish prices will increase over time due to additional compliance and prices will not come down. Maf are doing a risk assesment on the importing of fish which could mean some species of fish will not be allowed in, this will mainly be freshwater fish. Interesting how aussie get in 8-10 Million freshwater/marine fish a year and we would be lucky to have 4000 marine fish arrive a year, Puts things pretty much in perspective . http://www.nzreefs.com/whittingtonandchong2007.pdf
  22. Diatoms, Normal in any new setup
  23. News to me. i doubt they have as the list is the updated list put togeather by importers. Maf/erma are looking to take some fish off, however they will have to consult importers before they can do that. I have a interesting study done on ornamental fish in Australia, will post it once i work out how.
