  1. I have found some guppies has black eyes and some don't, can depend on their colouring, but is not an issue, I guess like some people have blue eyes and some have brown. Snails can be very difficult to get rid of. Are you going to get a light for your tank? It shows up your fishies colours much better.
  2. I love your fighter! Is he in with the angels too?
  3. Gee your guests are lucky getting a tank of their own Great looking tanks!
  4. Very good idea, a hard chillibin would probably be the best. I'll bet your fishies already have their bags packed.
  5. Hey Craig how are you doing now? Hope you are okay?
  6. Hey Loopy nice fighters! How many do you have for sale? I would be interested in getting maybe 4 colourful girls.
  7. With my Eheim 2217 I find that I mostly don't need to do anything and that it will eventually clear the air out of the filter on its own. If it doesn't I tend to turn it on and off and turn the hoses off and on and basically "fiddle" with it to get it going properly again. Its not too much of a hassle really and easy to tell when its going properly as it basically makes no noise at all.
  8. Cool pic, how did you get it without scaring him off?
  9. cool pics! Your discus has nice bright colouring!
  10. sword tails are quite cool and they come in a variety of bright colours. 8)
  11. Sirkus one thing you might find strange to get from a fish and chip shop is a hot donut with cinnamon and sugar, I used to work with a girl from Scotland who had never encountered that before she came here. Kumara is sweet potato and you'll probably find out what a pakeha is when you get here. I think the best food we have here is our dairy products (beautiful creamy icecream) and red meat. We also have good fresh fruit and veges, which are relatively cheap. and yes you can buy pickled gherkins in a jar (if you really have to) There are even some specialty shops you'll find that will have your favourites from the UK that you can't get here, but it will cost you.
  12. Hi Michele Nice to hear from someone from the northern hemisphere. good luck getting your fishies healthy again. I would use melafix to help with a fungal infection, but don't know if you have that over in the states, maybe under a different name. Anyway your tropical fish expert should be able to help you. all the best 8)
  13. Maybe its a combo of fish eating them, I don't mind, saves me having to get rid of the little suckers
  14. do you have any lights yet wagonman? fishies prefer to have a day/night cycle and if you want plants to live in your tank you will need lights as well. How are the fish doing now?
  15. I don't feed any fresh food, but I prefer frozen to freeze dried and so do my fishies
  16. I have a personal preference for Jager heaters, they are more expensive, but you get what you pay for. I have tapped them against the glass before and not had one break or crack. I have used a variety of cheaper heaters in the past, but have had a couple malfunction and cook my fish, so just beware, good to google and get opinions on the different types as mentioned above.
  17. Probably the same reason that dead fish decay in the water too.
  18. Cool tank! 8) the only thing I have noticed about harlequins is that they can jump but not nip, I thought barbs were nippy though? But I've never kept them (cos of this reason) so can't confirm that. Can anyone else confirm that?
  19. Hiya I haven't really noticed a big jump in our powerbill. Hard to tell though since we have quite a variance between winter and summer being down south. but to be honest the dryer and the heatpump would outweigh any extra power my 4 ft tank and 60 litre tank use.
  20. That is so fowl. People who take any part in this are cruel, heartless and pathetic and deserve to have the same thing done to them, IMHO. the poor fish, its disgusting and makes me really angry, why people can not see that doing that would cause pain and make a fish suffer is beyond me. Anyway I won't go on, everyone here probably feels the same anyway.
  21. I have both of these type of snails too. In my larger tank I must have a fish that eats snails, I have actually been wondering who it would be, because the numbers in that tank are small and its a four foot tank. When I gravel syphon this tank there are heaps of empty shells that get sucked up. In my 60 litre tank they are in bigger numbers and I just remove as many as I can or suck them up when cleaning and tip them down the plughole. Any ideas out of my fishies in the big tank as to who the snail eater would be I have angelfish, gouramis, a siamese fighter, congo tetras, serpae tetras, a golden algae eater, a golden ram, and a bristlenose plec. I am guessing one of the first three but not sure. Any ideas?
  22. you could always set it up with the wood and partially fill it until you get your plants, that's probably what I would do, that way your wood would continue its leeching and it won't dry out. Then do a water change when your plants arrive to get rid of some of the tanniny water and fill up with the plants in place. Does the wood float at the moment?
  23. All the best shellbell, enjoy your new fishies
