  1. me love fishy

    hi

alot of the time it can totally depend on individual experiences and when you go as to what fish they have, I guess if you don't see what you want you could ask if they could get them in for you. There are quite a few shops in Chch, we are quite lucky, some better than others, and one I will never set foot in again due to poor service.
  2. oh dear hubby will be pleased!! Its hard enough for him to compete for attention now with having two tanks and four cats............ but another tank with different fishies sounds very tempting

    Hi All

Welcome Corms from West Island Hope you enjoy the site.
  4. Trouble is too many fish, not enough room for them all (or compatible tankmates) I only have two tanks so don't know if I qualify as having MTS, but I would like another smallish tank.
  5. Cool photo of the plec with its "remoras" around it
  6. In my experience having added old water from a tank that is already set up would limit the amount of time significantly for the new tank to cycle (depending on how much water came from the old tank). When I set up my 4 ft tank(280litre approx) I took about 50 litres of water from a smaller tank I have and had that running with no fish but with plants and "cycle" for about 3-4 weeks and then started adding fish and I didn't lose any fish and had no probs with the water. All the best with your tank, what fish are you thinking about having?
  7. Man, he could charge people to go and see his tanks, at least that way it could help pay for the maintenance. His power bill must be phenomenol
  8. We went to Oz for a couple of weeks in March and had to get someone to come and feed our cats anyway, so I just put food in measured amounts in a pill sorter (you can get them from $2 shop) and got my friend who fed the cats to feed the fishies too. the lights are on timers anyway and everything else should be fine. so if you have a friend or even better a fish friend its an easy way for someone to feed your fish without over feeding. I have also looked at getting an automatic feeder but I have the same prob as you, there isn't enough room between the tank and lid for it.
  9. that is beyond words really that guy is seriously dedicated, saving up for 9 years How would you even transport some of those fish to your tank?
  10. Do any of you guys watch mythbusters? They did an experiment to prove that goldfish have a longer than 3 second memory. Jamie and Adam (the two mythbusters) each had some fish and Jamie managed to teach his to go through a sort of net maze to get to the food, it was quite amazing. I always thought fish were smarter than that anyway, but it was nice to see it actually proved on TV. I have noticed that in Animates whenever the staff go near the tanks the fish go nuts as they think they are going to get fed, when anyone else goes near the tanks they just swim around normally. My theory is that this is because the animates staff wear orange shirts and hardly anyone else wears orange.
  11. good luck with your tank, I'll bet you can't wait until its all up and running. I agree with you and Smidey about the info that is out there, I guess it just depends on who you listen too really and what works for you. Like your driftwood. i have a piece like that I call it "the mouth" (Caper was right ) I also have a piece that is quite tall and it looks like a squirrel, so it is called "the squirrell". One day I might manage to post some pics. Keep us posted on your progress
  12. Gee I guess the word "customer" should have told me that you were the LFS, sorry  I'll go back to sleep now, its been a very long day. All the best with it I hope you manage to help the poor blighter.
  13. Are there any vets that could help? Or a LFS that might be able to help?
  14. Hi guys This is kind of a warning to others. Recently I have had a few deaths, lost 3 rams over a couple of weeks, with no apparent symptoms and I have one serpae tetra with no tail due to finrot. Initally I couldn't work it out as everything was fine, the water was good and the other fish looked okay, although the remaining 2 rams had lost a bit of colour. Finally I realised that my tank was 2 degrees lower than normal! this was not a heater malfunction, which is why I didn't pick it up earlier, but really just because it has been miserably cold down here this winter so far and the heater wasn't quite doing its thing at the temperature it was set at. I have turned up the temperature a couple of degrees to counter the winter chill and colour is returning to the rams and I haven't had any other deaths. so If you have unexplained deaths or finrot, and live in the south island in particular, you might want to double check your tank temperature, not saying it isn't anything else, but just hoping I might be able to save somebody else's fish from dying
  15. I have a four footer and I have some golden gouramis and blue gouramis and a couple of angels as well as a few smaller but rounder bodied tetras (round bodies so they don't become lunch for the angels) I also have some golden rams and a plec a siamese fighter and a chinese algae eater. I really like the gouramis and angels and find them very easy to keep, they seem pretty tolerant to disease and water changes too, from what I have seen, I have had some of them for over a year. I did try discus orginally, I had two but they both died and since they cost $90 each I wasn't keen to try again so opted for angels instead. I also have a little tank and was so pleased to be able to finally have a few bigger fishies and glad I can have them too. Not wanting to promote any particular pet shop but if you are near an animates they are having a special on 15th July for lots of things for aquariums.
  16. I would check your tap water compared to the water in the tank now and if the tap water was a lower pH then do a partial water change, but I wouldn't be too concerned unless your fish are showing signs of stress, like raggy fins, cos some fish do like pH a bit higher than others.
  17. Hiya I would put some of the water from your existing tank in the new one (if its still up and running), that will help with the cycling of the new tank. I did this when I bought a new tank and waited for 3 - 4 weeks after set up was complete before adding fishies and did a partial water change once a week and I didn't lose a single fish when I added them. Just beware that some plants like brighter light than others when buying, I have made that mistake before and wasted money because of it. What fishies are you thinking about putting in?
  18. cool Mystic, your Aro sounds more like a cat than a fish I have two siamese fighters (in two separate tanks) cherry a red one and blueboy, gee I wonder what colour he is, Original I know. cherry is in the smaller tank (60L) so thinks he is the king of the tank and likes to be patted on the back, I can't get near blueboy though as he is in a 4 ft tank and likes to hang out at the bottom at feeding time as he thinks the sprulina discs are only for him.
  19. Good one Loopy, very accurate. Its funny how no matter how big though you always get bullies who cross over the line, with fish and people Your tanks sound pretty cool farmchick. Do you guys find with your Siamese Fighters that you can stroke their back and they don't mind, they are the only fish I have found they like this, the others tend to shy away. And man if a plec even sees you they tend to swim for it, well float fast really.
  20. Good on you Loopy for saving those poor fishies. I think it is disgusting that person on trade me kept fish in those conditions!! Pity you can't get the person you bought the tank off to give you a partial refund since you have to replace some of the glass now. good luck with your angels, I'm sure they appreciate you.
  21. All I did was get some thick brown paper (well stole it from work) and bought some paint and painted it and then stuck it to the outside of the back glass with double sided sticky tape, I am not very artistic so it is just blue, but if you were you could do all sorts of stuff.
  22. Yeah I don't see any probs I have a siamese fighter with gouramis and angels and a bn and he doesn't have any probs, anyway if you have heaps of plant life they like to sort of hide amongst it and are pretty good at getting away from anyone chasing them by hiding
