  1. Tell your fish thanks Loopy, it must be working. Blueboy is still surviving and I actually think he can see out of that eye now, because I was right in front of the tank staring at him and he moved his bad eye to look at me. It has definitely gone down a bit, still a wee bit cloudy and a bit bulgy but definitely better. I have continued treating with melafix daily and did a water change yesterday. Maybe it was just an injury rather than a disease, which is definitely good news, as I don't have to worry about anyone else suffering from it.
  2. Update on Blueboy. I got home last night and decided on the melafix approach (you're probably right about Furan Sharn but I didn't buy any yesterday and didn't want to wait another day before doing anything) So I added the recommended dose of melafix to the tank and checked on him this morning. He seemed a bit better this morning, I think his eye has gone down a bit (although hard to tell) but it definitely isn't any worse and I watched him after feeding them and he was out and about alot more and he ate some food, so hopefully he is on the mend anyway it is an improvement. I felt sorry for him though, because when he approached the food he had to approach from the side of his good eye and then turn and eat it, poor thing still he seems to be improving, so I will keep a good eye on him (no pun intended) over the next few days anyway. And still nobody in the tank will talk about what happened. They're a very tight group that lot.
  3. that's what I am hoping Caryl I did notice the day I couldn't see him that there was dried up water that had dribbled down the outside of the tank, so maybe he got a fright and jumped and hit the cover or maybe someone chased him, but either way something happened in that tank to make water dribble down the side. :-? and everyone else in the tank seems okay and acted like nothing had happened ("you didn't see anything!")
  4. Thanks for that Caryl. I did think of salt too but I don't think my plec would appreciate that either as I read that it is not good for them. It mostly seems like doom and gloom for him though reading that info anyway I will see how he is when I get home.
  5. PS have decided against using Furan, cos apart from the warning about it being carcinogenic and causing tumours in rats which is freaky in itself, I have a plec in my tank and I don't think its a good idea since I read that you shouldn't use meth blue on scaleless fishies. I have just gone to lfs for more melafix, I only hope that when I get home blueboy is still okay. Has anyone successfully treated this condition?
  6. Hi guys My poor fighter "Blueboy" has popeye. I hadn't seen him for a couple of days as he can be difficult to find, but usually comes out around food time. So he has been off his food and last night I noticed he has a bulging eye. My question is, can this be cured or not? I have read alot of different things about it and some say it can and some say it can't. would I be best to just do a water change and not medicate, or would adding melafix or possible furan help. any thoughts?
  7.  classic!! Reminds me of when i was younger me and my sister made up a sitcom for our cats we had at the time.
  8. How big is your tank? How often do you feed your fish and how much? How long has the tank been set up? Also perhaps the fish that died had already been damaged because of the high ammonia and nitrate levels that you used to have and it just took them longer to die. Sorry for your fish losses
  9. Is the guy you got them off a regular seller of plants for aquariums? Where did he get them from?
  10. Thanks Mystic I have wanted to post pics for ages just haven't had the time to sit down and nut out how to do it, glad it worked first time. There are a couple of my fishies that are "camera shy" so they are not in any photos, but I respect their right to privacy
  11. Hi Tracey Welcome to the site. Hope you enjoy your tropical tank. What fishies are you thinking of getting/have you got in it?
  12. Good thinking Caper! It is so easy to overfeed and fish can make you feel sooooo guilty

    Carbon?

I don't use carbon at all, never have. If I need to use medication after I have finished the course I do a good 30-40% water change. Normally I do a 25-30% water change every two weeks as well. I don't have any probs because i don't use carbon either.
  14. Hiya I have a four foot tank and use only two 30watt lamps. It means that I can't grow plants that require heaps of light but there is a good variety of lower light growing plants. I have 1 bn and one golden algae eater and I find I don't have too much trouble with algae, do you have many algae eaters in your tank?
  15. Thanks Evil I have some more http://img135.imageshack.us/img135/6541/dappleandhalfoftigsts3.th.jpg' alt='dappleandhalfoftigsts3.th.jpg'>

    Ulcers

What other fish do you have? what type of gourami is it? What are your water conditions, how big is your tank and how long has your tank been set up for?
  18. Shame your wife isn't a fish lover like you, then she wouldn't hesitate to get another Beautiful fish, love his markings and eyes are cool
  19. Hiya, have you checked your water lately for the usuals?
  20. I always add water that is about the same temp as the tank, straight from the tap. If copper is an issue you can use conditioners like Caper said. I don't use anything anymore, I used to use Stresscoat and Stresszyme, but stopped and haven't lost any fish because of it that I can tell. However, the water in Chch is not treated with any chemicals, so can't vouch for anywhere that has treated water.

    Hi!!

Quote: Only have 4 tanks I wish I had 4 tanks!! Welcome fellow fishkeeper. I know the pain of the bank balance to the vet, we have four cats and one is a fighter, so he is very expensive, probably why we found him at the spca Anyway enjoy the forum
  22. I also find neons die pretty easily. I have some cardinals and they seem to be alot hardier but are more expensive, but if I have to replace them less often might be more economical in the long run.
  23. wow you guys have some beautiful bettas, 8) I love them they are such great fish, I have one "blueboy" will try and post some pics at some stage.
