  1. Well after being told that my LFS won't get any killies in. They have now got pairs shipment comming tomorrow. I don't have a tank yet and I am totaly gutted but depending on the price I was thinking of getting one pair. Will they be ok in a 15ltr tank untill I can get the 2ft for them? They couldn't tell me what kind they were either so I will be going back tomorrow to have a look . If one pair would be ok in a 15ltr tank tempory then I might smuggle some into the house hehehe. Cheers
  2. Well this morning I noticed that some of them are no longer clamping their tails and are happily swimming about the tank. While others that have it are not worse than yesterday. I guess it will be time to bring out the grim reapers net and expell thoes that are showing the worse signs. Sigh The pain we go through to get beautiful fish to then have to cull some of them.
  3. from what I can see in your pictures it could be tannin (don't know correct spelling) leaking out of the darker piece of wood you have in your tank. I have the samething with one piece in my tank. It does no harm to fish or plants. Some one correct me if I am wrong on any of this. Cheers
  4. We are 2 hrs drive from dunners. Unfortunatly I can't drive there myself (me naughty and only on learners licence!!) and my husband doesnt' want to drive me there for "fish" as he thinks its a waste of time and blah blah blah. If we only have the one species down here then when I am allowed to I wouldn't mind trying a different one I am looking at doing a day trip or two over the christmas holidays up to dunners so maybe I can work something around then that is if I have a tank then. Btw what is ment by anuals and non anuals? cheers
  5. unless pet world is prepared to ship fish to me I doubt I will be getting any from there. I don't know when exactly but I hope that it will be soon that I can join you guys in this lovely world of instant fish :bounce: Thoes in dunners and invercargill (don't know how many there are) who keeps what species? Would be interesting to know whats local cheers
  6. hehe nothing wrong with us southislanders apart from the fact that I am origionaly from hamilton as of 3 yrs ago hehe. Soo much oppotunity up there with fish and tanks then there is down here. Just sucks for the fish hobby now that we are down to only 1 tight bum fish store with an owner who does nothing to keep customers. btw with killie eggs, how do you hatch them?
  7. I have heaps of fry but I only have about 2 that are showing a solid black colouring which is what I am wanting to breed. But I have decided that if I lose all my guppies and don't have any fry that colour up as nicely as I like then all the more reason to go to killies I am currently treating the tank with malachite green so I will see how that goes for a week. cheers
  8. Well it looks like I could be losing all my guppies which totaly sucks as that means no more solid half blacks and I doubt that I will ever get any more as the new ones that the LFS is importing are very small and not very nice looking. I have noticed about a week or so ago that a couple of them looked to have what I thought to be white spot so I put them into a solid container and hung it inside the tank to keep it heated. I don't have anything for white spot but have used melafix and malachite green. The first one looked like it had come right after 3-4 days so I put it back into the main tank. I then noticed 2 days later that two different fish were showing the same spots (would of been about 4-5 spots on the whole fish) so these two went through the same treatment. The following day one has very inflamed gills and it looked like its gills were hanging out from the inside. Later that day the fish was culled as it got worse and worse. The one left in there still has the spots though. Now the rest of my tank have started to clamp their tails!!!! My water is fine, pH of 7 and not one trace of ammonia (only test kits I have) I done a 50% water change which only made a little bit of difference to the ones affected but today more and more seem to be doing the same thing. When I got pintail with my fry I was told to treat malachite green which seem to do the trick. Only prob is that it kills catfish so I have had to remove them to other tanks and I have reduced the water down to 2/3 and treated a half dose (will do other half later tonight) of malachite green. Is the Guppy Disease like this? I really don't want to lose my breeding stock. Not when I am right about to get my new tanks.
  9. Hey there. I would like to know the price (shipping included) of some killie eggs in say late dec/mid jan.I have to wait a bit to get the next tank. Also what sort would be available at this time? From a list that I have gone through I really like the look of the Australe Gold, Striatum, Korthausae Red or Yellow and I really like the Bitaeniatum. I am not apart of the NZKA (yet) and I am prepared to pay full price. I will look into joining the NZKA if I manage to get another tank sorted and really give this a go. Cheers

    killies

Well as I said I am not too worried about the baby guppies as I do my hardest to get the mum before she drops into a breeding trap. So how much would it cost for some eggs (shipment included)? Is there a site that has pictures with the names as I would like some colourful ones if possible. The only other fish that is in the tank with the guppies are a male and female bristlenose (plus one baby that I can never catch!!) Cheers

    killies

hmmm if they will go into my guppy tank (even though I was told that they would eat my guppies origionaly) which species will I be able to do this with and does anyone have any eggs they could ship and for how much. hehe I could say that I got some more plants and these eggs must of been on them! hahaha wonder if that would work! hehe anyway some luck has come my way and I will be able to get the tanks sooner than origional thought Cheers

    killies

WOW I wasn't expecting that sort of responce! hehe thanks very much for the offer though but I am only getting another couple of tanks for my guppies and I don't think I can get away with another one or more for killies. I have found a 2ft tank for $50 (60Lx30Dx36Hcms) but it has no light. If planted (not excessive) and I had a breeding pair would some of the fry survive? with out having to take them out of the tank to hatch or what ever? My main problem is trying to get my husband to agree!!! lol. I asked him if I could introduce a new fish to southland and he said "NO Your not getting anymore fish! You only wanted Guppies and thats what you got!!" so umm yeah I got to get around him first and I don't want to have to sign divorse papers to do it hehehehe. Once again thank you very much for the kind offer but I really got to get my guppies sorted first cheers

    killies

Well my chances of getting killies down to invercargill have just gotten harder to do. The only petstore down here won't take them (if I manage to breed them) the reason for this is because they only last a year and they feel that even though they are a very pretty colourful fish they won't be any good to sell because they die so soon. Cheers
  14. I have managed to get myself an albino male. But I got a funny feeling I won't be able to breed him as he has absolutly no interest in the females that are with him. I soo hope that he isn't infertile!! I tried to take a heap of pictures of him but unfortunatly he came up soo bright that he looks like a blur! I have found a pic that almost looks identical to him apart from my ones tail isn't that big yet but this shows you what colour he has. Now and then he will look more golden/yellow in his lower half. http://www.tropicalfishintl.com/images/ ... d-male.jpg
  15. I think this is a very sad sad thing. I understand Alans reasons and think that the others that got their nickers in a twist should of sat back and thought about it properly. If they had limited numbers then what was wrong with breeding them and then giving some of the eggs/bubbas out that way. Some times people are just to selfish to realise the hurt they are causing others. So sorry that it came to that Alan. Eventually when I manage to get Killies to the bottom of the south island I will be hitting you up for lots of info hehe Wish you well. PeneJane
  16. I have added some fert sticks many months ago (june/july) and my plants have taken off really well. The one plant that I can't stop from growing and is very quickly taking over the tank and is needing trimming almost weekly is the Ambulia (think I got that right) the one that looks similar to cabomba. I have almost half a tank of this stuff so I am going to get more sticks for my other 3 breeding tanks as they come in. Other plants are taking off well in there to but I have no idea what the name of them are and my camera takes crappy shots so I can't take photos of them either. I will be getting a new camera in a yrs time that has a 10cm macro WOO HOO
  17. they are two half black males. I had the same thing with my Male Betta. I also had a bright orange male and a half black male with a big red tail. These two males were never touched. The only one that was attacked were my solid half black males. Why would it only be the black males with black tails? Why not the other colours as well. I have seen tammys setup and her male betta has no interest in the male guppies that she had in there before but her two new half blacks are a different story.
  18. What is the recommended food for these guys? I was told that normal goldfish flakes would be ok but I haven't seen them eat it. I have given them a small amount of blood worm (jiggled a piece about till a few worms fell off) and thats all. I am soon to have microworms and whiteworms. Untill then would goldfish flake be ok or would I be better with tropical flake? cheers
  19. Over the christmas holidays we are going to be taking some day trips up to dunedin. I was wondering where abouts (address would be great) some good pet stores are for tropical fish. Would also like to know if there is any place/person who is selling cheap 2ft tanks these holidays? East Rd Pets is charging me $150 for a 2ft tank with internal filter and light hood. Is this worth it, or cheaper to get individual bits? Cheers
  20. So what do the eggs look like on these guys? The female that I have has got me worried lol but then again I worry about any super large female fish. I have found two little white coloured little round things which I would like to hope are eggs on the outer edge of the java moss. When the female drops her eggs will there be a big change in her body shape? like will she lose the plumpness of her belly to let me know that yes there maybe some eggs in there? Hoping to add these little guys to my soon to be set up breeding room Cheers
  21. Is there anyone that can post a pic of what their eggs look like? Are they easy to see. I have read sites that say they can lay up to 300 eggs If this is true are they in a clump and can they be seen? As I said in an earlier post I have got what seems to be a female and her back end looks very large. I really do hope that she is ready to lay and not sick of some sort. I have also noticed the two males are having a go at each other. Is this normal? cheers
  22. When I get one of the bigger 2ft tanks for my guppies. I will then put the minnows into the 15ltr tank. I will then sell the tank that they are currently in and get them a 22ltr tank which is the same as the one that my guppy fry are in I got one there which I think is a female (huge rounded belly) but the back end of her looks swollen kinda so I don't know if she is ready to have eggs or if something is wrong. I guess time will tell Sooo excited
  23. when I see fry in there I am hoping to scoop out as many as possible and put them into the fry tank. Would guppy fry eat them? There is plenty of plant. I am not intending to breed as such yet and once I get one of my bigger tanks they will be moving into a 15ltr tank and this hex tank will become a hospital tank I am able to restrict the flow of the filter to reduce the current produced so I will try that first and see how we go. Cheers
  24. Well I got 4 WCMM's today. I hope I picked two males and two females but now that they are home the extra female looks like a male but I can't really tell. I have removed 3/4 of the gravel out off the bottom of the tank and only left a little bit to hold the few sticks of plants and java moss in place. Its up on our kitchen bench so don't mind the Milo Jar behind them hehe. They love swimming in the current that flows in this tank and they all stick together. Here is a pic. Enjoy

    White worms

Out of curiosity which is better for newborn fry and older fry (guppies) Microworms or white worms? From what I have read micro worms need to be redone every couple of weeks yet white worms just need to be given some food once-twice a week. With White worms do you sit the glass or plastic lid directly on top of the soil/compost? Would perspecs be ok instead of glass? You can get poly boxes of varied sizes from the plastic box from as little as $5. Would one of these be ok? How do I start a culture off? Micro worms are on trademe but not white worms so was wondering who can help me with starting a culture. Cheers PeneJane
