  1. The shop is wrong, it was faulty, they supplied it, they return it. You may have a clause that you pay costs tho. What shop was it??

    peat

Barrie, you may recall the term Jiffy Peat, it was talked about last century and even mentioned in books of an English origin You can get them from most Garden Centres, and as the "other" alan says, just make sure that they don't have fert additives. They ate about 50mm across and 10mm thick, encased in fine mesh. When soaked for about an hour, they have swollen to about 60mm x 60long. Strip of the mesh, and you'll find a very fine grade of peat. It is imperative that peat is boiled between uses, one, it kills any harmful germs, but it will also kill any dormant eggs, thereby cutting out the chance of mixing breeds. A must in the NZKA. KBK
  4. Can you please put what area you are in, in NZ. If in Auck., please also be specific. Go to you profile, location, change it and submit You will find it saves a lot of "Where abouts are you questions?" Thanks

    Dither Fish?

They are also used as a distraction to egg eating cichlids so as different protection instincts come out and they hopefully don't eat their own spawn.
  6. I like the way Faran looks so natural there FT
  7. She was prolly harrassed Sharon. When I see that, I float an icecream container with them/it in it. Serves several purposes. Stops more harrassment. Lets her recover from the trauma. Saves looking for the body that could be eaten, then if it had any malady, the possibility of it being passed on is decreased. Easier to treat a small portion rather than the whole tank.

    Dither Fish?

They were on their own David, and I didn't actually see the deed, but one did get a bit of a bash, but once again, not too bad.

    Dither Fish?

Giant Danios could do the trick I think
  10. Just found some ctenopomas, they've had a name change. Can't see the neon tetra tho, or maybe that's just "male-looking"
  11. Some of the info I was given is wrong mako, I see there are still livebearers and labyrinths in there. Can't see the ctenapomas tho. Don't ask what was on the other list, just look for the ones that you would like if you could get them.
  12. When buying a thermometer from anywhere, you get what you pay for. If you get say 5 or 10 of them and compare the readings on all of them. You will probably find 6o difference, a few high, a few low, and a line of them about equal with one another. Buy those ones. Now neverIMO, trust the temp reading on your heaterstat. To test it. Heat a small bowl of water so as the thermostat is controling the on/off, read the thermostat setting, then take a thermometer reading. Bet it's different. So now make a note, maybe write it on the plug H/S26 = Th24. That way you will know that that H/S is 2o out, or whatever the diff is, and you can make the appropriate adjustments. Now heat your tank after making the necessary adjustments to the H/S to match the Th. and when it is cutting on/off check the temp again. It should now be reading what you expect it to be reading. If it's not, throw it all out and keep goldfish.

Yep, wrong on that one  But succeeded on getting rid of the "L" which was my main point. I won't go back and make it look as tho you guys are picking on me. I have broad shoulders. Thank goodness some of us do make mistakes, sometimes.
  14. Alan suggest that you take the turtles out of their tank to a basin and feed them in that. He thinks that if this is done, a lot less pollution will be added to the tank. They may, in fact, deposit the faeces in the bowl when you change them over. Use a water change to put into their feed basin and replenish the water that you have removed with fresh.
  15. Sex them out about 100mm long. The female shows a fuller stomach, trouble is, you really need a group to spot the difference. When they lay they have thousands of floating gold coloured eggs that catch in the area of the waters edge and the tank side. I found them easy to remove by syphoning them downwards thru a bent piece of airline.
  16. http://www.biosecurity.govt.nz/imports/ ... agecontent went back and did it a different way.
  17. Why that didn't show I have no idea as I copied and pasted it.
  18. I have found it a lot easier for many eyes to search to find the hidden secrets. So I am showing you this link so you can hunt down your favourites, read, cry, get angry, stamp your feet, then tell us about it in the thread with your posts. No use swearing on the thread either, it will only get deleted, and don't go off your face at the authorities and say what you'd like to do with them or give their questioable ancestory. This could lead to the whole thread being deleted and loosing good, shared information. Get out there breeding the ones that won't be permitted as these will then be the only stock available in the very near future to us hobbiest in New Zealand. The thread is. SEE BELOW

  21. Why don't you offer your boy for stud for maybe a few eggs when the time comes??
  22. Tim and I have made it safely to Whakatane. Called into see Daffyd on the way home. Our NZKA sponsor, The Pet Shop, Taupo. Jim_r, to have a coffee and pinch some sand and to get more abuse from both Him & 'er, thru to Rotorua shop, then our last visit where we were made very welcome by Glenn and his wife Eileen and the two boys. Fantastic fishroom, and well worth the effort to make arrangements to stop in and see. So to home. Fish OK Dog OK Not sure about Rose yet, hoping tho, Thank-you B&K for those kind words. I'm still trying to get my BP down. And I'll concur, the weekend was worth the while, and it was especially great to see old friends that I had'nt seen for a couple of years. But I think the biggest hug from the whole conference was when John E and I met. First time since his accident, and his guardian angel; your a good one Gail, a real bottler. Now to sort out all those new NZKA members that have joined up; 7 for the weekend. Have to try to do better next year. All the best to all those that were down there to share, and that were helping to make it what it was. And Richard, I'm sorry, even as a kid, I use to laugh when I made a boo-boo, sorry mate. But it was funny wasn't it??

    Walkeri

Well Barrie, I guess if they show up they show up. I agree, there could be some out there. Just have to hope if there are, that they have been stored okay. It's amazing how long those eggs seem to last for. If you do manage to find some, let me know and of course, set them up and attempt to hatch them. Same goes with any other eggs that some of the "oldies" may have lying around. You never know.
  24. Some have learnt how to run faster Dave. Safe travel everyone
