    collecting eggs

Yep, that's the way to go, then when you are passing them on or selling them, you can say 12 "eyed-up" eggs guaranteed, or what ever.

#265 and #215 both pick the eggs like that, BUT, place them on trays of damp peat, so as the eggs can be seen and any fungused ones removed.
  3. An airstone bubbling away would keep a section open. Unless it really gets cold. Then it wont matter, they'll be hibernating on the bottom. Yes it does scare the fish, in fact it can kill them with the shock waves breaking the ice.

I'm pretty sure he is aware of that Alan, but what Matt has done is syphon the sand thru a sieve. The sand has gone thru ok, but because of the pressure some of the eggs(the smaller ones) become jammed in tne mesh. Thinking about it. If the sand is put thru the net with shaking, like gold panning, then the pressure onto the eggs wouldn't force so many into the mesh, and those that do, wont be so tightly wedged. I watched Aquanut do this the other day, and he had the same problem. A bit of experimenting Matt and you'll get it right I think.

Invert the net over a bowl and tap it on the edge of it, or use water pressure from the outside.
  6. Your sorry ? Your sorry?? You must be joking!!! Those thugs are sending out weak teams to NZ and OZ and their sole purpose will be to take out our key players. Those yuppys are so easy to read. I thought they'd beat us, but yay, we got them, now watch what happens. But as this is a welcome area, welcome madsaffa hope you enjoy your time here. What killies do you have??
  7. Do a 60% water change, DON'T touch you filtration and carry on.
  8. That's what I thought would be the answer. STOP-LOOK-LISTEN. You are overstocked now once those fish have grown. Have you ever done a check and found out how big each of them grow to. Bet ya haven't, or else you wouldn't be where you are now. No more fish and start looking for a new tank or new homes for some of the fish.
  9. What HFF, don't you leave your nets in the tanks so as the fish aren't scared of them when you plunge them in. You can also train you livebearers to drop in them, and some smart cichlids will herd their babies into them.
  10. If you cut of the stem, it is like going to Maingatonoka and breaking the production chain. Then what are all those lovely workers going to do?? Yeah right!!
  11. And what is the length, breadth, and height of your tank OB??
  12. No, we are saying that when it is mature enough it will snap off easily without damaging the plant or the stem.
  13. Notice what way it is growing from the parent stem, and gently push it backwards from where it leans. This shoud snap off neatly with little or no trauma to the stem or the plant.
  14. It would also help if you could tell us what fish you have.
  15. When they were imported they would have come in under Danio spp. Now every fish has to be named individually and are not covered by the specie blanket. Damn it.
  16. No actually Wok, the MAF are very strict on the names of the fish and common names are never used. Now with the new regs running, they'll also have photos for ID as well.
  17. If you take off an eels tail, what do you have left? A head?

    out door ponds

just tell council it is for firefighting purposes.
  19. There are several plant suppliers on site here, I think it is a bit off season at the moment, but if you were to enquire from them, I'm sure that they'd help you out at a bit cheaper than the LFS too. Indian fern and java moss are good starters as are valisenerias and cryptocoryne. Like alanmin says, the mondo is a rip off too. at least the green and white won't die then will it??
  20. You are also close to the border with that green and white leaf plant there. If the colours were reversed, it is the aluminium plant or spider plant. The one you have is the wheat or rice plant, named for the cluster of bulbs at the root base. BUT, it is not an aquatic either, but will survive better that the aluminium plant.
  21. Those golden barbs of yours would live quite happily outside at your place G. So don't worry about raising the temp. Maybe seperate the sexex and condition the genders up till the females are popping, then introduce them. Only prob is that they are avid egg eaters and fry don't last too long either if they are too slow.
  22. Scaless fish would be the most susceptable G., but as long as you are doing your regular water changes you should be right.
  23. ep, water changes, get your pH up to just over 7 and that'll get rid of the agressiveness of the water. Of course it does depend on the fish you have and what priority that you have.
  24. Regular water changes keeps the copper pollution right down so as not to affect your fish. First sign of copper build up is the snail population dying off quickly. Action can be taken at that stage to prevent a toxic build up..
  25. For a start Nic. the stardust is NOT an aquarium plant, and sorry to say will gradually deteriorate and die from drowning. It does ok in a bog situationn tho. Did you get it from an LFS, if so, tell them of the errors of their ways so as no-one else will get sucked in. Probably paid good money for it there where as you prolly could have got it for a fraction at a Pak-n-save or similar. But the result would have been the same either way. The way to tell a terrestial from an aquatic in a general way is that the aquatics don't support themselves out of water where the others do.
