Given the bottles float - all their heat exchange is most likely with the air (easier to change the temp of than water). So yes, chances are you won't notice any difference really at all.

I just use 4x20L buckets, it's about all I can fit in the car's back seat, and is just about right for a 20% water change. Takapuna boat ramp is all good

Brown stuff is dirt bacteria tend to live in it etc, but you can clean it and it'll be fine, just so long as you do a bit at a time.

well you can't put more voltage in with it I would go for the center connector and one of the edge ones, you're most likely to have most success with that.
