I always liked the idea of getting frags because I could grow them

I never balked at $25 for a frag really.... given same things are $100 in shops for fully grown. If you are confident something will grow in your tank, that makes $25 a good deal

So really, you don't want to touch the chiller.. you just want to put the fan on a thermostat of some sort - because if the fan works, the chiller won't come on anyway I can't help with the implementation, but hopefully that helps with the design a little.

I just had a looksee at the freshwater tank, and it's somewhat infested with cone-shaped snails, all running around in the gravel (well, doing what snails do). Anyone know what these are? and how to get rid of em?

For saltwater tanks you can get a blade attachment for mag scrapers. Actually, one of the large 4" mag cleaners from the LFS may do the job for you, given the inside of it is velcro hook (i.e. scratchy), it certainly removes coralline with some work. That or you can get 24" long scrapers from the LFS too (well you can up here), so easier to get to without hands in tank etc.

I was going to make some smartarse comment last night about being able to spell quarantine, amongst other things. However if he's 14, that makes more sense.

I'm just guessing here, but I think if all you wanted to import was 50 zebra plecs, and provide quarantine etc yourself, the price per plec would be far more than $600/fish. That's cost to you as well, not resale.
