  1. Yeah, everything's above the waterline I shall try and procure an airstone tomorrow, shut the pump up a bit I got another timer today, so it's set for when the lights are off. Snowman.. might visit you tomorrow night if I can't get past a LFS during the day - cheers
  2. Possibly if you vented it to the atmosphere... turning it straight off could have explosive effects One other question.. I have no airstones at home, so am just running airpump->hose->tank, and its rather noisy... I take it an airstone will quieten it up? (it's a brand new airpump)
  3. Righty.. airstone it is.. yeah.. being the nutrafin CO2 jobbies they're a bit hard to stop at night without making up some funky system.
  4. I have a wee issue with my heavily planted tank (4x2x2 for Alan ). I'm running two of the nutrafin CO2 things on it, which of course run 24/7 as opposed to just during the day. I've found that however in the mornings a lot of the fish are sitting at the waterline, and don't really move from there till the lights go on. My take on this is that during the day (lights on) there's enough photosynthesis going on to keep the fish happy, however when the plants stop at night there's just CO2 getting pumped into the water that's not being taken up by anything or converted into O2.. bad. So... would I be smart to put an airstone in the tank, on a timer so it runs only when the lights are out (with maybe a little overlap), then stops during the day so I can maximise the CO2 uptake of the water?
  5. I just put the hatchery on top of the hot water cylinder.. worked a charm

    FOWLR setup

Yeah, but that would mean replacing the stand that's there ( aqua one supplied)... I'm trying to keep the partner happy whilst starting into this scene

So some kind of mechanical filter as well as skimmer? Basically the idea is to not have a sump - because that in the lounge would be bad
  8. I had loaches in the tank (clown and skunk) when the second lot were laid/hatched, they didn't seem to cause any trouble.. Dad does actually do a pretty good job, and is big/scary enough that the loaches scampered

okay.. I have an aqua one 5' tank (370Lish) that currently has cichlids in it.. and I'm kinda wondering whether it might be time to try something else for this tank. It's got an inbuilt filter (sits on the top) which I was planning not to use unless necessary, or to hold rowaphos/carbon/whatever/etc if needed - definitely not as a biological filter So.. for keeping just fish/live rock, I'm guessing a skimmer would still be good, seems DeepBlue have WeiPro hang on ones for not too much. So.. guess the question is, since I can't really run a sump on this tank or drill it without all sorts of fun, for a FLOWR tank, would the skimmer+live rock +some powerheads for flow etc provide enough filtration to keep the tank "cycled" as such? I don't mind the heater being in the display tank (can hide it I'm sure).
  10. I didn't leave the lights on for mine when they spawned, in fact I didn't see anything till the young were free swimming. One thought I did have is possibly move tank decorations, driftwood, whatever so it's difficult to get to where dad and the babies are, with angels that size it shouldn't be too hard to make the area somewhat inaccessable. Once the babies are free swimming/escaping from dad they should be well fast enough to evade the angels (my 2wk old fry scare the guppies when they zoom around )
  11. actually I used feet for a unit which from Alan's point of view probably makes him happy, and other people in the whole aquarium business are used to the units I could have said 1220x600x600.. but it's less fun
  12. There's a good enough reason to get another tank if ever I heard one
  13. With those tanks, if they're anything like the Aqua One ones, you can fill them so the waterline disappears
  14. I got a 4x2x2 10mm 430L tank for that price ($160) so less than that, depends where you live as well probably
  15. I'm also interested in good prices on the compact fluro's
  16. wait till they get a bit bigger I had two, I now have one.. guess what happened
  17. filter goes on floor, hose 1 goes into tank and sucks water, hose 2 goes into tank and blows water. Simple
  18. pH should be close to 7, Ammonia should be zero
  19. expose them to more microwave radiation
  20. Have a look in the cichlids forum for a post from Phillz and congrats!

    Tank Hood

mahhahahahahahaa Especially evenly distributed over the whole top of the tank
  22. Heh.. not sure how many you get every time the GBA spawn, but after two spawns of the common b/n I have over 200, so am looking at swapping pairs with someone They certainly don't seem to do things by halves.

    Tank Hood

I sit a 20kg bucket on the top of my 4x2x2' tank, doesn't seem to phase it much along with the three double 4' tubes.
  24. I found with three clown loaches and two skunk loaches dad still managed to keep em off the eggs. The angels could be another story though, depends if they can get to where the eggs are I guess. I now have two spawns kicking around the tank, batch one are ~2.5cm and batch two about .8-1cm, neither seem to get bothered by the loaches at all.
