  1. IMO blunt force trauma or severing their spinal cord are the most humane methods and the quickest. You could try putting them into a weak solution of alcohol (to anaesthetise them) then into a stronger solution (to kill them and they won't feel a thing) if you wanted to get really into it.
  2. I've never read anything like that. The couple times I've had fish die I've flushed them.
  3. 20 inches, that's about 50cm. I think a bristlenose would be ok in a tank that size.
  4. Oscars do, dunno about Ghost Knifes.
  5. Where did I ever accuse you of accusing him of falsely selling something, Shae?
  6. They're a pair of Platties and they're breeding. He's not falsy selling anything. It's really people's own fault if they don't research the fish they're buying beforehand.
  7. I've kept plecos with Goldfish before and bristlenose in a cold water tank before ('cold water' being no less than 20 degrees C though). You probably would be better off with the Oto for a tank of your size though (What are the actual dimensions of it?)
  8. Angelfish, Oscars, any other fish big enough to fit them in their mouth - they'd be a market happy to take them off your hands
  9. I didn't. I'll have to go down to the chemist and have a chat with them about it sometime I guess.
  10. I've actually been looking for some of this for a while too, not for my hair either (I doubt it'd have any affect lol) I hear it helps with sinus problems because of it's antiseptic properties, and I've got helluva bad allergies that always mess up my nose.
  11. hahah indeed. I don't think Oto's suck onto other fish though - that's Chinese algae eaters. A very similar looking species. There's oto's, chinese algae eaters and Siamese algae eaters... with the chinese ones being the ones that will suck onto other fish. It's confusing because they look so similar and pet shops often sell one type as another. I've got some (I think) Chinese algae eaters that were sold to me as "Standard Algae eaters" and they definately do suck onto other fish. Two of them are currently sentanced to death in my Axolotl tank and my other one's in with my oscar - the moment I catch him trying anything funny I'll dice 'em up and feed him to the oscar though. He used to be in a tank with some corydoras and they were always really timid and I rarely saw them, then one day I caught him sucking onto one of them. That was a couple of weeks ago, now that I've moved him out of the tank the corydoras are much more active.
  12. Yeap looks like Java moss to me too.
  13. Yeah I was gonna mention Oto's because I've heard good things about them, but I haven't had any experience with them so I decided to just stick to what I know.
  14. You forgot "more tanks"

    HELLO!!!!!!

Hello again and welcome again I agree with you, this forum's great, the knowledge that flows around here daily is really helpful. Apart from the salt water forum though - those guys'll contest most anything it seems. Perhaps that's partially because salt water aquaria are more of a 'frontier' and more unexplained than freshwater is, but still
  16. Don't go for Indian fern unless you want the entire top of the tank covered in it. I got a bunch of plants that obviously had a germ or something of indian fern in it and a couple of weeks later boom, the top was covered. I'd remove as much as I could and it would just bounce back. The tank was well fertilized so maybe that's why it found conditions so favourable or maybe it's just a pest generally. I've hopefully finally removed it from the tank now though.
  17. Algae eaters are good because they aren't just algae eaters. They eat any uneaten food that your fish miss and any algae or whatever that grows in the tank. A general 'clean up crew'. The most common and best all-around (in my opinion/experience anyways) one would be the bristle nose catfish. It doesn't grow too big for most aquaria, eats algae all through it's life cycle (which some don't), gets along with most anything and will get any uneaten stuff that floats to the bottom. The only down side to them, if there is any, is that they're not particularly colourful and some people find the male's bristles/mustaches unsightly. I'm not one of those people though and you can get golden versions of them that're more colourful but also usually more expensive. Normal Bristlenose Golden
  18. Can anyone else confirm this as true? Yes in the wild they eat algae, but in the wild there are huge tufts of algae everywhere. I don't think that the amount of algae that grows in any one aquarium would be enough for them to subsist on solely.
  19. You could try changing the layout of ornaments in the tank so the dominant one doesn't realise where his territory is.
  20. Use copper sulfate. Commonly sold as snail killer. In my experience, it's worked better than white spot cure and it's less stressful on the fish.
  21. It was my understanding that all holes had to be drilled before the tank came into existance.
  22. We just had a transformer break down at work, it was around 6 months old. heh.
  23. They're definately tetras, that's no mistake. They could be either species and just have really faded colour for one reason or another, it's hard to tell. Do you have any more pictures of them?
  24. Probably not, but he might like some for a light snack. I've got about 50 baby cons in another tank atm though so if I wanted to I could feed them to him. I'd rather give them away/sell them though.
  25. I've got two external eheims, both of them work like a charm, I've never had any problems with them.
