  1. I just bought one of these off Trademe. Anyone had any experience with them before? Edit: Whoops, meant to post this in the Freshwater forum.
  2. You might find one of them will kill the other. That's what happened with two of my Chinese Algae Eaters anyways (same species as the Golden, but the Golden is albino)
  3. When I first got one of my 4ft tanks I had the same problem. It went away as the tank aged.
  4. Convicts aren't african nice tanks though. Deeveus, you could try replacing your neons with Cardinals. They're bigger so they're less likely to be eaten (more colourful too).
  5. It won't be cycled if she only has plants in it though.
  6. That's true, but keep in mind that you need to increase the co2 and fertilisation proportionally as you increase the lighting, otherwise algae just grows on the plants.
  7. You'd probably have to install the rod slightly off centre, either that or set up a temporary brace while you removed the glass and installed the rod.
  8. Yeah that should work, heat loss might be a factor though depending on the thickness of the container. A polystyrene container of similar size would do a better job at keeping the heat in, or you could just insulate the plastic container with towels/blankets/whatever.
  9. I don't know if adult brine shrimp have very much nutritional value. New borns are so good because they still have their egg sac.
  10. You could get a few oscars, they're incredibly intelligent and great fun. I've trained one of mine to jump from the tank to get food from my hand
  11. Well, you could put some Angels in but then you wouldn't have any guppy babies for very long. This could be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on how you look at it. Another popular choice for similar aquariums would be a few Siamese fighting fish.
  12. I've always hated that colloquialism. It was vaguely acceptable when said by the beautiful Uma Thurman but when anyone else says it I just want to punch them. Nothing personal though
  13. It would really depend on what fish you're talking about, there's no one size fits all method to the way fish breed. Generally though, feed them high quality food (live and frozen foods preferably) and keep the water conditions optimum. Sometimes a large water change with unheated water can stimulate breeding (the fish think it's raining then).
  14. I'd be quite interested in taking part in such an exchange. I wouldn't have to just throw out buckets of Hygrophilia Polysperma (I think that's what it is anyways) weekly.
  15. You realise that Brine Shrimp don't actually come from the ocean, don't you? They come from landlocked salt lakes, and as such Salt Water may not actually be that great for them.
  16. John recieved ours yesterday and I picked up mine off him today, all I can say is wow! There's a lot more than I expected, thanks again Dubbie! I've currently got mine soaking in a container with copper sulfate (snail killer) because there were quite a few stowaways on it, as you mentioned in your note.
  17. I think 9 small guppies should be fine for cycling a tank, especially one that size. They aren't going to produce very much waste, especially since they're just small and you want to build up the good bacteria in the filter to a substantial amount.
  18. The reason for having 2 females to one male platy is because with just one female the male will harrass her to no end and she'll get pretty stressed out. Bettas are pretty unique in the 'no other males' respect, but even with them if males grow up together they get along in the same tank fine. Your black neons may be females but they just might not be producing eggs right now, due to diet, age, water conditions or any other number of things.
  19. Don't know what the problem is but do put some aquarium salt in the tank it's in, it helps kill any bad freshwater organisms because some of them have quite a low resistance to salt.
  20. If it is a male, you should start seeing them soon. One of my B/N's has quite rough skin like you describe and he seems to be perfectly healthy.
  21. Good to hear they're alright, awesome picture!
  22. Awesome pics, good to hear she's alright!
  23. Yeah one of my 4ft's has 6mm glass and one brace, haven't had any problems with it either.
  24. You could get some salamanders, they're amphibious.
