  1. for a juv, i dont see a problem ay. they are pretty small. thats a good size tank to grow out
  2. depends on the length and wha tyou wnt to achieve. i have seen 50 cm arowanas in less than 40 cms of water level. kinda mean though.
  3. ok, i am changing my fx5 configuartion i am looking at putting standard bio noodles as a first tray media - as a mech and pre filter, then wool, then bio media. Now, is this effective to catch debris? or will it just catch a tiny portion of it and let the wool do most of the work. my other 2, i have course foam on the top tray, works very well, high flow and catches HEAPS of gunk. should i stick to that or use noodles?
  4. when you say high market prices, its still very cheap. I just saw a filipino ad for some nice 'state of the art' new strains. FH strains are a funny one, there really isnt any distinct ones, they change all the time! i mean, constantly. but the best ones, could sell for no more than 80 to 100 nzd. alot by asian standards but still not like arowanas. i guess its cos of their breeding patter, prilific in nature. yeah, i think i may try to get a thai silk out of them. pure blue.
  5. I have just been told that it looks like this fh strain is a THai silk x strain!!! lol good call fraser! anyhow, if that is the case, whcih after inspecting mine and thai silk. it looks like a cross indeed - carries similar traits.. I think i could definiately get a thai slk strain out of this with some good line breeding. we shall see.
  6. lol nice cichlids. i must admit, i am starting to like them. that redhead is a stunner! texas too. love the festae. duncan was just saying, i should can the thai silk and go for the red dragon strain and get some red festae blood in there. maybe dividing my tank in half, having a pair each side would work
  7. is that texas male or female? looks male? my new flowerhorn is gonna be my show cichlid.
  8. http://www.mypalhs.com/forums/showthread.php?128288-2011-PALHS-Show-Photo-Thread check out the pictures here. this is a filipino website (so if you see random formations of letters, you are not going crazy) look at the pictures! some of them are absolutely stunning flowerhorns! thai silk http://www.mypalhs.com/forums/showthread.php?128655-HYPOXEMIA-thai-silk&highlight=thai+silk http://www.mypalhs.com/forums/showthread.php?127382-Thai-Silk&highlight=thai+silk thats gonna take several generations of extensive selectively line bred fish.
  9. been looking more into that. thai silk strain has no black spots, its a pure blue silk colour. hence thai silk strain:D ... anyways. given time, i do agree, i believe you can create such a beast. i have seen one on hff albany, no spots at all, pure blue colour, but not solid like the thai silk (whcih is like a blue diamond colouration but on a fh) i agree, i think it is a worthy pursuit...
  10. ok. i am thinking. if i was to cross a female Flowerhorn with a male festae. i would assume the male festae would also contain similar if not same genetics as a female one, just shows differently in the 2 genders. its hard to find female festae, but male is much easier. could i use a male festae to breed with a female flowerhorn? would the result be the same in theory if i used a male FH and a fem Festae?
  11. hoping the forehead will grow bigger!! but i th in it will seeing that its very small and the forehead is developing nicely already.
  12. surprised with them too. i got 4, 1 is really ugly, dark colour and very little blue. the other odd female is very nice, you can see on the vid, smaller but very very bright female. the male and female pairing up has very 'holographic' blue colour and a slight red base. but i believe the 2 that im gonna keep will improve in age. the forehead of the male is startig to get the silky blue as well, quite excited. I may seriously consider keeping them together and breeding them. see what comes out and what they look like. maybe line breeding will be in order lol
  13. These flowerhorns are literally 3 to 3.5 inches MAX. Here is a vid of the flowerhorn chasing away the other 2 and making a nest, a little dance too. Here is just a vid of the male one, up close to show colours. Have no idea what strain of flowerhorn it is, but seems like this is way better, shinier and colourfull than any of the currently existing stock!! surprised to see the males forehead developing from such a young age, i dont want it to be extremely disproportionate like some asian strains, but i do want it to be extremely prominent.
  14. if you have some holding tanks, and multiple tank set up. i reckon you should breed a good strain of flowerhorns. flowerhorns will cross with texas, salvini, festae, fire mouth and even jags and dovii (according to articles overseas) basically many cichlides. even fertile female parrot cichlids. line breeding them would be awesome, this is a project i have always wanted to work on but no room and no tanks!
  15. i dont believe they will breed properly, ill keep you posted. i dont want themt o breed yet
  16. my 2 female flowerhorns will do the trick!
  17. i am actuall scared to feed courgettes, cosw i know they will demolish it, and if same thing happens, then i lose a couple - thats gutting
  18. i have seen fh breed before. and the male gets extremely violent. this male isnt, probably due to size. its still quite small. definitely courting, the female has changed colour, they stick together. but no sign of eggs or no sign on female that just layed eggs. maybe just premature hormonal triggers? lol we shall see. but at least i know that i have a pair! happens to be the 2 biggest ones and best coloured ones, lucky! early days yet, not really sure if i want to breed. I have no other tank. if they breed, the male gets angry and cannot mix it with my red arowana. so dont think breeding them is a good idea anyhow
  19. i tried one courgette, couple days later tried orange kumara. its almost as if they found both irresistable. i mean... its like they just guard it and keep grazing, thats how much they loved kumara lol but sadly, i believe it was to their end. the courgette was the same, in less than 1 hour, i went back and there wa sno green left. the blue phantom was most prevalent with the courgette, and my big polka dot was absolutely crazy for the kumara. (geoff, sadly it was the one i got from you!!) i was so gutted. that was my most active pleco in the tank - i was away in queenstown when fraser (fruju) discovered it &c:ry i guess, i am angry at myself, wafers were working so well! and to try something new, i figured variety is good.... and this has come from it.
  20. evolution is awesome. I saw a documentary on a lizard, not sure where. but its face is designed to literally divert nd fully water into its mouth! so when it rains, or even morning dew or a drizzle. The lizards face will literally funnel and direct water directly into the animals mouth. thats awesome!
  21. i see, so feel very little to begin with, and just slowly get them used to it. ok, i see wha tyou mean.
  22. so how do i feed 'little' to begin with? cant really regulate what they eat i guess.
