yeah jardinii long term doesnt need as much turning space as a silver aro, silver aro gets much much longer. but they are moreflexible in terms of turning. the problem wiht silvers is that they are more jumpers by nature than the sclerepages genus. they jump when frightened, or uncomfortable, always have 10 to 15 cms of gap and dont fill to the top so they can jump. when silvers hunt, they tend to really come out of the water. asians and jardinii not so much but a little bit. a silver will be ok in that tank for liek david said, at least 2 to 3 years, probably more depending on how fast it grows. in terms of tank mates, wil silvers you can put heaps. ck, rck, flagtails, chalceus, cigar sharks, silver sharks, pacu, silver dollars, meynis, pleco lots really anything that is either semi aggressive to aggresive, or too fast to b seen as food. but aros always surprise you wiht what they try to eat. my jardinii ate a bristle nose and killed plecos. but leaves tinfoil barbs alone. it attacks large borneo tigers but leaves little flagtails alone. mfk has a few hundred years total accumulated knowledge on all types of aro, even african aros. join that too

well heres my situation got one tank, with a jardinii - its got amnia, he jardinii doesnt even notice its, they are hardy fish, te amonia differs from .5 to 1. if i change the water it goes down straight away, but goes up in 2 days to 1. should i leave it for now and let it cycle? or intervene?
-
yeah ok just impatient i guess i have never had problems cycling tanks, i swap medi around etc but emergency called for me to set up a tank and immediately put fish in it. its a hardy one so it will be ok but im going away in a month, so im scared it wont be sorted by then
-
indo ate one shrimp, and didnt spit it out and swallowd it second piece it spat out after chewing awhile. but wide bar ist going for it.. im concerned. it ate gold fish 3 days ago though
-
i wanna know is there any product , reasonable price that would boost amonia feeding bacteria to hasten my cycling and establishing my filter? i got these little vial, calls bio digest, apparently it helps but its more for nitrite. i need something ot really really boost the first bacteria that eats ammonia.
-
could just be the rubber seal you can take it off maybe and go to local hardware store or something and replace it or LFS
-
ok my mistake i also have a canister in this set up with bio filtration and sponge so its abit different i guess with partitions you cant really beat filter wool but putting an internal where the filter wool should be should work the same or add to the filter wools efficiency shouldnt it?

i disagree i looked into a similar product the build quality is poor the fittings dont fit right the finish is un even i guess the glass is probably made from the same factory but generally, i found sun sun to be poor i have seen a tank, i actually bought off trademe when i went to pick up it was so poor i had to cancel trade. the problem here is that i believe, similar to a cheap knock off filter. if they were so problem free and great, then all LFS would be selling them they have not reduced and or eliminated jebo, even jebo was reasonable, but problems coming back was so much that they could not stock it anymore. lfs will sell things that sells, no loyalty to a product, if a product sells, they will sell but if they hve to keep replacing it, it dosent work for both parties and reputations get destroyed with that at times over night. if you want a nice tank, go get the good reputable brand, less failures. if its only a tank, and lid, maybe its ok but if it has inbuilt filters lights etc. look first, it would be wise to, i didnt look first and upon arival was shocked ... -
yeah ill try that ill mush beef heard with it:D soak it in then they might go for it but it went for it violently today, and the wide bar thats recovering went for it too, just less violent. so they are hungry, wanting to eat and just picky, so eventualy insticnt to survive will kick in
-
as a note you can get some internals that can dismantle and you can put the filter wool inside them, you can also use that for fine filtration. jsut that when you have the motor pumping, you get massive out put of water.
-
easy i find that mechanical filter wool and pre filt er wool foam is really annoying at times, so what i do, is i bought two heap intrnal filters. jebos, i run them in the sump as a mechanical filtration. now i have 4 internal filters. 2x jebos, 2x fluval 4s in my sum doing the mechanical filtration, plus the massive water going through them makes bio fitration very good:D untill i got my recentdats problem my jaridnii tank was always good water quality and i feed them lots, i use dto over feed the jar. never any problemms. i have not cleaned the internet filters for more than a year. it has weakened slightly but the filtration with some dirt in there is very gooed and lots of bacteria
-
yeah, its good that wy, planted so it hunts like in the wild makes them active and aggresive:D i love it! i would say that aros are my favourite fish (that you can get in nz) then dats are now second:D i would love a aro comm tank but sadly i am not brave enough to risk a 2k fish:D when i set up my 1200l, i would probably try to buy adult aros and put it together. still thinking about it lol ill have 3 dats in there, larges ones, so filtration needs to be extreme
-
bought a canister for $100 but really the quality is so bad! the fittings snapped cos i moved the filter and its so crap it coudlnt handled it. fx5 fit so well, and the fact that the water shoots up more than a meter into the air when on:D you know that pump is designed for going the hard yards
-
my dats both of them went for the pink shrimp - but after chewing spat it out. but this means they will eat it cos they were gonna swallow it yay!
-
just got my second fx5! woo hoo i love them they are such effective filters! i found out what the difference is with fluvals, eheims versus chinese knock off the difference is when you buy a fluval or eheim or reputable brands, there is more care in making the fittings inside fit. Baskets and things fit SNUG, meaning leak of water is less. so water is directed exactly where it goes. cheap ones dont fit right, meaning that water just seeps everywhere, so from entering the filter, it just randomly goes to the outlet with out going through media and stuff. the problem here is that, per say there is a 5ml gap between baskets... i hvae a cheap nasty one and it has this between two baskets, 10% of the water passes through this gap and doesnt go through any media meaning if you multiply by 4 or 5 baskets, you have so much water not passing through. hence filtration is not as good so the mere act of taking water and passing it through a canister... just isnt enough ok, anyways i just love fx5s

was eating fish filets and beef heart one of them eats beef wide bar wont eat beef i am worried so tried gold fish no hesitation ate it in less than a second literally. so it obivusly is hungry but wont eat other stuff
-
its not the indo the indo will eat beef heart nothing else the wide bar wont eat anything. chases the food but when it gets to it, doesnt eat the food. i have tried raw shrimp, pink shrimp whichis what i feed all my fish, pellets, beef heart, fish strips. wont eat any of it. the wide bar has not eated for 3 weeks almost.
-
hey mark so you think i should get some feeders. tads or gold fish and get them stimulated and feed later with dead food? ireally dont want them addicted on live food - expensive...
-
might wait untill bigger everyone has said just wait one of the dats still not eating. its annoying chases food but when it gets close wont eat! tried shrimp, beef, fish fillets, pellets wont take a bite, m talking about the wide bar the indo eats like maniac the wide bar wont eat ... what should i do
-
amrid yellow and red with blue. cheap product it syaas it PROOTES BACTERIA COLONIES how does that work? with out amonia the bacteria has nothing to feed off. but does it only remove a certain amount? do you use it as a bo and mech filter media? so it first removes the aminia and then itself becomes a bacterial colony media? i am interested in this prduct

Hello all I have a 6 inch silver aro if i mix that in a tank with 2 large dats dats are 30-35 cms...more than 1' long. I see when they yawn and stretch their mouths that it extends way beyond their face, assuming these things can grab and swallow big things. will this 6" silver aro get eated? currenly there is a 7 to 8 inch RCK in with the dats

i just put my massive borneos back into the jardinii tank. so far so good immediate curiousity, but very so slightly , they seem to be swimming with ech other peacefully the jardinii ate so hes obviously not stressed out as h ate a 2 shrimps less than 2minutes after intro of the two dats i found that they act differently when i am not watching so ileft a camera to look at later upside": if it works great! ifit doesnt..... i got a tank ready for the jar:D lol

i think i found a balance i have a heavily planted tank i switched the canister from that to the borneo tiger tank then i put the new canister on the planted tank to cycle it i am getting an fx5 in the next week hopefully that helps
