they are not fat! they are merely ...... big boned 8) oh oh their main diet are hamburgers....well, minced beef heart:D they love it, and compete like nuts. deathrolling everywhere when i drop it in, they converge like sharks and blood. i got them from david r, not sure when, not sure if they would grow more to be honest, but did in the end. one is a runt but even he is starting to get big lol didnt wanna name a price, cant put a price on a fatty like that, its not about the money right? lol its satisfaction. once i sell it, its gone! and i cant look at it and go......"coochie coochie cooo" cant wait for the pink tails to get big enough to chuck into the tank! i want that tank so full of fish - makes the aro tamer.
-
yeah he does 4 of them lol he wants more!
-
looks solid the floor, no play or give. but hey, if there is no certainty, next best thing is hope:D the feet are also on metal shim type things, that spread the weight so its not so concentrated. I think she'll be right.
-
wasnt 3 litres, probably closer to 5!! man, door was are a pain but worked out in the end. i think the floor should be strong enough - rather solid. good looking tank though, right by a window, easy changes:D you can start apreciating your fish in your tank as opposed to mine lol

Also, how else can you design an overflow to take water fromt he middle of the tank? i am lost there. cos isnt an overflow designed to take water at the surface of the tank - hence over flow dereived from OVERFLOWING? if you took it at the middle, then this would have to be a siphon action whcih would stop if there was a pwoer cut or water level is not enough? confused. i find that putting more filterwool doesnt work either, cos it jsut blocks and the bottom layers dont actually get used, the water just goes tot he sides of the filterwool portion thats clogged. so regular filter woold change is best IME. i also reuse filterwool 4 to 5 times before disposing of it. as you reuse, you have to clean it more often. after 3 to 5 times, i have to clean the filter wool every 5 to 6 days. then i throw out. brand new wool can remain viable for much more i found.

i found in reef set ups, current is much more and particulates tend to circulate more and have less time accumulating at the bottom fo the tank and substrate. in freshwater set ups, where big current is not as desirable, i foudn that they tend to accumulate at the bottom, though i found in my set up, i dont get that problem anymore cos i have too many bottom dwellers, and no point in the bottom is unstirred. but in saying that, the overflow catches only so much. by having 3 more inlets that suck in particulates, then it gives less chance for particulates to get to the bottom. also filterwool in my sump trickle set up tends to quickly get clogged, by adding more canisters in the tank, this is distributed through out the system, so i dont have to replace as often as before. just my experience. my tank is 72 high which i speak of, not overly high but i find that if i dont have the internals and the canisters, i cant feed as much and water is not as clear. im not talking about very small particles, im talking about visible chunky fish poo. now, as for murkiness, i dont have that problem i find filterwool is sufficient without the use of carbon.
-
a trickle filter will never in my opinion clean the water as clear as canisters. unless you have a massive current inside like reef tanks. i found taht clarity was an issue, despite my water being very clean and good quality. so adding canisters and internals clears it up rapidly. i dont top up my tank, it over flows daily with my changer

a sump trickle filter system, tower filtration what ever, really works in exactly the same basis as a canister filter or a hanging filter. just a matter of volume and capacity and direction of flow. but generally, its same principle isnt it? to me, my sump set up is like an fx5 on steroids. more media, more filtration.
-
well, then tell your suppliers to get us some then!!

my 2 1200litre tank runs the same filtration system. in the entire set up are the following filtration. 2x fx5 1x aqua one cf1200 1x fluval 4 internal 1x tower trickle sump set up 1x secondary gravity draining trickle set up. this is where the first stage is, that container has many holes. disperses the water into even drips, then particles are taken by the filter wool. Bio media amount on this set up is immense. once the water is filtered, it goes to the sump, Fromt he sump there is 2 return pumps, one for returning water to the tanks. The other (black one) returns it to the secondary set up. The secondary set up in theory are clear water already, no particulates. So no filterwool there, just water being filtered twice. Then it works on a ball cock system, taht opens a valve that drains the water to the sump again. Then the blue pump will carry up the water to the tanks. Here is a pic side by side, the entire set up. My filters, all of them in these 2x 1200 litres is probably 35 to 40 kgs wet weight. Not many bioballs, i dont find them to be sufficient, more so ceramic stuff, eheim and aqua one stuff. bargains on TM:D gotta love that site! My feeding regime is massive. Arowanas alone eat heaps, pellets as well as 5 times a week, i drop a ball of meat into the tank for bichirs to feed on. I have recently up'd my feeding as caring for frasers bichirs and also wanna get my tt eel huge! its not eating mealworms, beef heart, fish fillets, prawns, prawn heads.

i used to have a pacu. i tried to regulate its feeding to stop the growth, this is in my younger more naive days. but it didnt. instad it ate 2x 1foot plecos. well not the entire thing, it actually ate the head only, weird. its mouth was bleeding, cut up..... but healed with in days. then it chewed my heater, i found out cos i put my hand in and kinda gave ma s hock. then it tries to bite me when i clean the gravel. i fed it a mouse - adult mouse, suffice to say, it ALMOST disturbed me..... pacus are a menace for most tanks, because they get absolutely huge and they DO NOT STOP EATING. litereally i could feed mine 1cup of pellets, and it would eat all of it. keep in mind, mine was 60cm, my tank was 55cm, and had to do 3 point turns to turn around. i gave it a way to a guy wtih a massive tank, he does landscape and aquascaping. i think mostly black in nz. not many red bellies, might come in by mistake, but black is the main one we get. if you are getting one, please have a big tank.

also because having a sump and tubes and pumps and pipes looks awesome! it makes your set up look like a lab. just be careful, that if people see it from the outside in, they m ay think you are manufacturing the 'P'. if you know what im sayin. or in my case, i have had someone ask if i have hydroponics in my garage due to the water seeping out ........... could be abit of a hassle if cops get the wrong idea:D

i dont know much bout planted. but canisters keep the water clearer in my experience. the canisters are very tightly packed so its better for clarity. but a trickle and sump set up is definately better for high volume waste and filtration. the amount of filtration you get with a trickle set up is way more than a canister. even an fx5 cannot contain as much media. my trickle tower thingee has so much bio filtration that i would need multiple fx5 to match it. i do in fact have 2x fx5 in 2x 1200litres sharing a sump...for the sole reason that i feed dramatic amounts of food.

my door has a loud sound that is unmistakable when opening it. i wake up if someone steals something, and will be out at the front wtih something not so pleasant for the guy.
-
these are a real fw pufer hope you can breed them! and keep this species in nz.
-
How to do that? 6x 4 foot tanks with one good filtration????
henward replied to maaxim's topic in DIY Section
sump size IMO is not always the key, its bio media volume and flow. you can connect all those tanks to a small sump, but have massive amounts of b io media and it will be better than a tank wtih massive sump with little bio media. its easy to connect, just plumb them all together into one outlet or diffuser. becareful, that the pump is not so powerfull that it overflows out of the tank. -
not sure yet. 8)
-
yes i do indeed:D i did have amonia problems in the start, but got rid of that with increasing my bio media dramatically. plus the fx5 helped too with the massive turn over of water. they are also wicked on picking up particles

looked big for an albino though i thought:D
-
lol dont know living art bought my one AGES ago grew huge my o ne is ok now, but not as big as i want it to be lol
-
cool looked awesome though. i could imagine a huge one like that.
-
whats going in it? how do you get the black water? what plans?
-
cool love clown loaches. something about them that i really like. your school would be nice when bigger too, i can see 4 oddball patterned ones so far:D
-
as youc an see the 2 1200litre tanks are sharing the same sump and trickle system. but i forgot to mentoin they do share a couple of towers. filtration is big for me as i feed heaps and the fish in there is big and hungrya nd many of them. i also have 2x fx5s full of bio media one on each 1200 litre. 1 internal fluval 4 ( to catch more particulates) and a aqua one equivalent cf1200. so there is much filtration in there.

on that note, albinos are often stunted. so i hear. best to get a few, and the fastest grower, hold it back and sell the rest
