  1. temp of water filtration Amonia, Nitrite and nitrate readings what sort of water changes do you do this would help asses the problem i reckon. but looks like a disease, thogu in saying that, the other pics didnt have signs of it if that is recent.
  2. 90 cm fopr a jardinii even in the largest aquariums in the US and UK, is hard to come by. i dont believe they get as big as easily as a silver
  3. thats the system i have. i have a main sump wit a tower that was filte wool and a scondary tower that just does the water filtration, no filterwool, works well.
  4. there is a solar heater that works even in winter, as long as there is sun. that would work too. but indoors, i agree with david that heat pump in doors in a insulated room is your best bet. once the heat is up to temp, you maintain it by a heat pump. BUT thats indoors lol
  5. mmm perhaps, to me, i think having both is the key lol large amoutns of media and flow. you can compensate wtih flow rate to have bacteria do their job if you hvae high flow, the repitition compensates i think
  6. arent african cichlids mostly vegetarian? maybe a garden patch would be more suited 8) haha no really, i thought they were vege eaters? thats what david attenborough said on EARTH BLUE RAY:D man thats an awesome documentary
  7. i get my water from the okura resevoir, nothing there, very good water.
  8. its hard to say. but ... if you have massive massive amoutns of bio media, you can get away with slow. if you dont, fast is the key. but you need to also ensure you have enough turnover to turnover particulates. Unless thats not your main concern. I say, BOTH. huge bio media, and fast:D taht way you cant go wrong! bacteria grow surprisingly fast in my experience, you just have to make sure you give them the right media to live on. i also have all the time, redundant bio media spares. any point in time, i can set up a 2 fluval canisters wtih fully seasoned bio media....seasoning is pepper, sumac and a little bit of curry powder.. oops sorry typo, im also typing at a cooking forum 8) no, anyways, back on track, as i said above lots of media, lots of flow, you cant go wrong:D
  9. a company called aqua therm tanks would be my first call patented heat retention system. also i would say not a black line, i would get a proper solar panel to heat water, the glass tubes with reflectors. they are only 1500 to 2500. really a small investment to save you thousands in a couple of years. heating a 30k L tank would be a huge undertaking. I would have a solar heater, and a redundant system of a gas heater to ensure temp is always up. if you have a 30kL tank. you would surely put highly prized fish in there. if i was to build tank like this, i would invest almost the same value with fish! if not more! so, investing in the right heat retention and heating system is important i reckno.
  10. i tried to mix silver and jar ages ago, when i first got my jar. silver attacke jar as it got introd to the tank. then jar attacked it. i separate dthem, cos the silver held onto the jars fin and would not let go. literaelly, was hanging on lol was ugly!
  11. 1 on 1, your success is not good even if your tank is big, you can be lucky, but i doubt it. if your tank was MASSIVE, then perhaps, you hav a good chance. the silver will attack the smaller jar. if the jar was to survive...it would fight back. if you were to separate it by a separator, maybe you can observe them if any agro comes up, almost guaranteed though. then sometimes they get used to each other after a couple of years. but that is nto ideal though. i would say, sell the silver, settle with one.
  12. after seeing those photos, i feel very very sad indeed
  13. a bgk ha a massive mouth. in fact its mouth an open almost 180 degrees. i have seen my 30plus cm BGK take a piece of beef heart size of a thumb!
  14. IMO, its water and what goes in the water and how you treat the water that causes most diseases. food id ont believe can cause diseases. i feel sinking hikari pellets, floating cheap flowerhorn pellets from thailand, and economy aqua one pellets for my fish. arowana eats shrimp. dats and ck eats massivore and bichirs are given frozen balls of beef herat minced, whcih EVERYONE picks on when it drops to the bottom. clown loaches love them. i do however, treat my tank with a small dose of tonic salt 3 times a week as a preventative measure. also my filtration is somewhat comprehensive. water change is also very regular
  15. running cost would be a nightmare despite the tank being one of your dreams lol 19,000. the heating would be immense in nz.
  16. i have tried guarlic guard and i msut admit, its a good appetite enhancer. arowanas tend to go through fasting periods, when mine do, i simply buya gold fish, inject it with garlic guard. just a few mls, 1 to 2 mls. sound mean but i litereally just get a syringe with tiny needle and pump the goldfish with it. it brings them out of the fasting period. live food does that, but when idid this, it seems to be a more violent appetite increase. i find that this happened after water changes and stress. i dont do it anymore as my fish never endure any temp drops greater than 1degree through natural ambient temp drops.
  17. wow jsut saw this thread lol. thanks for the kinds words! lol Inspiration? wow, i am really flattered. thats good though, the more bigger thanks in the hobby the better. big tanks = mroe fish = bigger hobby in nz!!! usually monster fish, and monster fish rocks. i must admit, i have and always loved the idea of a fully hard out planted tank! i even have metal halides waiting for it one day lol. but unfortunately, the fish i keep tends to destroy them! David should have held on to the dels:D lol i dont think i would sell them unless i had to! i reckon bichirs tend to eat more, get bigger in a group. when i had just one or two in a tank, they didnt eat much. but when i got more and mixed them. they all compete for food and growth was way way faster.
  18. agreed value for money or superiority, there is no arguament. eheim, better.....value for money, fx5 for that class of filters IMO.
  19. ehaim is exceptional. you also get eheims with built in heaters. eheims focus massively on bio filtration - so flow is not as massive as fx5. fx5 has massive flow. the eheim, even top end does not have as massie flow, but the flow it does have has way better bio filtration efficiency. but go for fx5!
  20. bred or wild caught, its hard to know at the lfs end but i heard that stripes, shade of orange and the stripe itself and number of stripe is dependant on the part of the river its caught. ronnie knows alot bout that i believe
  21. most fish react by smell or vibrations and movement, not colour i believe but if it works, thats fine i guess i tried to make my gold giant gourami redder by soaking its food with red dye, but it didnt work, but it ate it and no harm done. its normal food red dye.
  22. No, definately not. but, you can lobby. the endof the day, ERMA decides what comes in. how they do that? you pay for them to consider your application, and prove through studies that the rays are no harm ot nz environments. then they decides. you need peer reviewed science papers etc. i think its possible, someone just needs to front up wtih a few hundred bux and some papers of research.
  23. stilla f ew ptcs available around, theres your chance! apparently a semi exciting shipment will arrive in a couple of weeks, wonder whats in them.
