  1. This is news to me Alan , I've never seen any referance in the year book or on this site's info page saying the NZKA members have any more rights than any other FNZAS menber ??
  2. it IS 30 days from free swimming they then become eligable to be registaed and this had to be be done before there 60 from free swimming. see rules 5-7 here : http://www.fnzas.org.nz/breeding_scheme/rules0/
  3. Hi Penejane you have to have the fry 30 day there has to be 10 of them and they have to be sighted and verified ( normally by your clubs breeding coordinator ) they also have to be registered withing 60 day of being free swimming. There is a form to fill out and sign a copy can be found in the year book or if you can't find one i have it in a soft copy and can e-mail it to you. Hope that helps Paul

  5. the male has a more pointed dorsal fin and the female is more colourful. No there not to go into a community tank ( swordtails .plties etc ) or they will eat the lot. but can go in with a community of similar cichlids ( malawis )
  6. here's a good referance for stripping fry , hope it helps http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/stripping_fry.php
  7. Update : I thought today was the day to strip her so i emptied the tank of caves so i did not have to chase her too much and her swollow the babies and stripped her into a hard plastic breeding box, she spat 15 babies which i thought was pretty good for a young mom only 6cm herself, her mouth was bulging. The babies still have a bit of there egg sack left ( maybe i was a bit early ) so i won't feed for now but was wondering will microworms be ok for there first food then finely crushed flake ? Thanks for all the advice everyone a great help
  8. Adele had the same problem with her cichlid tank and we found putting heaps of plant in the tank for a few day absorbed all the "green" and the water cleared nicey , i think its to do with the phosphates in the water but no chemist.
  9. & I think its called PetWorld in Levin has just had a make over and by all accounts now pretty good, not been there myself yet but more than worth a look, its on the main road trough Levin on the left as your enter from Wellington Good luck

  11. Hi Guys I have an electric yellow that we noticed yesterday is holding , i can see into its mouth and there are eggs inside , my question is what to do next, should i put her in a holding tank until the eggs hatch then strip her or leave her with the others till i see the fry have hatched or what ? , would really like to save as many fry as possable but have very limited experiance with mouth brooders. Thanks

  23. Hi After many attemps i've finally managed to catch my 3 dangila danios out my 700L, there large fish for danios messuring around the 10cm+ , i'm pretty sure i have 1 female and 2 males going by body shape. Has anyone mangaed to breed these and if so what conditions , temp etc did you use, I've put them in a large long breeding net ( 2 foot long ) in a tank of there own and raise the temp to 27 hoping to kick them into spawning , any advice would be most welcome as i don't think these are very common fish and would love to be able to breed them. Thanks Paul
