  1. 6500k is what I've always heard would look the most natural. Although Antwan's got a PL (right angle U-shape fluro) at 8000k and that apparently looks better?
  2. /luke notes: not having children altogether avoids all those many hassles and more room and money for tanks It's still on topic, now we're talking about too many breeds of humans
  3. I triple that. I wished I'd known MH was so good before I spent $350 on 2x double 4ft fluro cases and tubes from the LFS. Did okay but just not the same as MH. T5s were popular for a while as they have more wattage and take up less space but MH still beats them. To answer the q I have fluros and one big MH. Post some pics a couple weeks after you've done aye bud?
  4. Hah...not so lucky eel huh? Some people smoke them and eat them, particularly the Maori I believe. vtec8u ask dave the waikato pres, he just set up a native tank with some whitebait and bullies etc and he might be able to add something about them
  5. Heya 2fishy, yea there was a big thread on it here somewhere. You use Excel and start with a normal dose then double it was the general consensus. Some people have had it kill their fish but I've never had a problem, if you see them acting distressed do a big water change. HTH
  6. Hehe was a bit of a crowd of us Jenn, that is a good idea to get some pics here I think as a lot of pics were certainly taken, and some video thanks to our vice pres The newsletter was great but I agree it is quite hard to follow if you just read it online without printing it out, KK if you send it to me I'm happy to try and manipulate the format so it's easy to read online and then we can send it out from there?

    skunk loach

I had a couple and found they harassed my tetras so I traded them in in the end. Just my experience.
  8. You need more light bud, if not totally dead, your dying plants may even recover.
  9. I fifth* it, you want ideally 1w/litre, can get away with 0.5 though or a bit less if you have fertilisers and CO2. To answer your second question, the shop plants always look good because they get them in fresh from the growers and then sell them on before they have a chance to die. Use to puzzle me too why shop plants look so good with just the usual fluros that most people have at home. *edit..you just beat me DJ by the time I hit submit
  10. Hey Tracey welcome, tropicals are way cooler You must be looking forward to summer and cheaper power bills
  11. 20 neon or cardinal tetras ... magic
  12. Yeah I think a lot of wholesalers sell them as zebras but they aren't the proper L046 Zebra Plecos. Shouldn't be a problem if you get an experienced LFS owner or worker who knows a bit about them to get them in, sounds like we can't get them in now any way. http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/sp ... ies_id=168 *DROOL*
  13. Wow that sounds amazing, never heard of that before. Who said tetras don't care for their young?
  14. lol @ that springer kid. All just looked too familiar. Wonder if that kid ever would've got zebbies into NZ though I highly doubt it.
  15. 'fraid I'll have to disagree with you sharney... best to do a big water change to remove any residual ammonia or nitrite as well as the detritus that's built up, the good stuff is now in the filter. Best to add fish slowly, but you can add more and just do more water changes to help the filter. http://www.simplydiscus.com/forum/showt ... 426&page=2
  16. Hehe cheers bud. Everyone I know that has converted to MH has not been disappointed with it, in fact they've been over the moon with it
  17. I don't know...... I grew up eating nice crumbed and fried white bait...very yummy, except a bit freaky eating them eyes and everything else lol. They'll probably be killed by run offs from fertilisers and effluents from farms etc before they're overfished to extinction. Humans will likely be extinct one day too though.
  18. Yeah it grows very well under Metal Hallide, not sure if it's totally necessary though as I've only ever had it under MH lighting. You can see my mattress of it here: http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/lukes- ... 14989.html I plan to grow it out to cover the whole bottom of the tank. It's similar to riccia, but it has some major benefits. It forms a thick mat and once settled it does not float up to the top and take hours to replant. It has roots, so doesn't have to be tied down to anything. You can put your gravel vacuum over the top and plumb it lightly to suck up any detritus that has settled over it. Fish can nibble on it and clean the leaves (e.g SAEs) and it won't become unstuck and rise to the top. It's NZ native
  19. Sweet dude glad I could help You could use some peat in your fresh tap water to lower it a bit and this will also stop the fish getting stressed out (is that the 7.0? looks like you wrote tank water twice )
  20. Yes I agree with Sharn also. Big 90% WC once you get nitrate.
  21. Almost anything can adapt to MAF's waters lol
  22. Well you did everything right, 2 weeks is the right time for seeding a new filter in an already established aquarium. Also good you mentioned you dechlorinated the water and heated it. One thing.....what's your tank pH vs the tap water pH?
