  1. From what I've read, it could be a build up of calcium deposits within the shaft/bearings. The alarm is a warning that there is something slowing the impellor down (one reason anyway). Have you stripped the stream down and checked the shaft and bearings for deposits??

    hello

It's really a pretty good site, with alot of good people with a passion for marine aquaria (saltwater section) who honestly try to help people. Some are a bit sharp at times but get to know them, you might be surprised.

    hello

with a reply like that we are glad you went to an overseas site as well. There are 2 many instances of unsuspecting people getting ripped off hence some of the replies. People have been sold aiptasia or rockpool shrimp as tropical rarities off trade me, if you are in a position to clarify then do so.
  12. well, Sushi (2 little girls...I get all the good names  ) the PBT is doing good, the cleaner shrimp (don't ask... ok ..Mr Mops) has been attentive and at the moment he is spot free and looking good. thanks for your support guys.
  13. Can't really agree that it didn't need it Caryl, you were just lucky They are neat tanks, my 2 girls loved it and they can get really involved in collecting for it. Now with my SPS reef, they can look but not touch  When you say top up, I hope you were topping up with Fresh not salt.
  14. bubbles.... thats the name my kids gave my yellow tang.
  15. Alot of that same equipment required depending on what inhabitants you want. I kept a local marine tank of about 800 litres for over 10 years. You need a good skimmer, a good biological filtration system, good lighting depending again on what you wish to keep. Regular water changes are necessary. i keep mine in a air conditioned room to keep temp under 20 degrees in summer. A chiller would be better. You will go through the same maturity issues that trop marine go through, algae and diatom cycles etc. There are some great livestock available at local beaches. West coast beachs on certain days (very low tide , minimal swell) can yield awesome critters and fish. I collected baby sole, baby moki, baby maomao, big eye, scarlet wrasse, leaf fish, hiwi hiwi etc from muriwai at different times.
  16. I see they can grow to 30 cm, what a bruiser he'd be then
  17. He's doing ok Rossco, fewer spots than yesterday but could just be the cycle. hes eating like a pig and I'm soaking is nori in a bit of garlic juice (which he tears into every day). Picked up a cleaner shrimp today at Jansens (last one) but its still settling in so we'll see how that goes.

    flatworms

an overrated problem I reckon, they come and go in my tank, never cause any problems, never die off on mass, that only happens when you nuke em all, then you've got toxins to deal with.
  22. spoke to soon, white spot back and plenty, will get a cleaner shrimp asap and see how that goes...
  23. Temp - 25.5 - 26 C Kh - 10-12 (sits mostly on 11 with reactor) Ca - 420ppm Mg - 1380ppm SG - 1.026
  24. Thanks fay, I took my girls down to Port Waikato a couple of weeks ago to collect some fossils by the cliffs on the beach, lovely spot, first time I've been there. Knew you were around somewhere, and Jetski has now told me about where your shop is so next time I'll pop in to see your tank.
