  1. I agree wasp, the life in my ref is amazing, and alot of this is transfered to the tank. I don't get good algae growth. It grows in spurts, then starts to go off, and I remove it. Running out of nutrients I guess. My ref is also the only place now with sand, which also promotes organisms that live in it. Its not a DSB, only 40mm or so but I don't disturb it.
  2. Theres a good idea, threaten to build a controller, market and sell it and get everyone really excited about it, then.....................
  3. Time to cut that one up Steve
  4. Does any one have chaetomorpha??, as i'd like to use it in my refugium. I have a some macro algae in my reef, (escaped from my ref) slowing getting rid of it (tangs), no hair or micro though, I have a little Halimeda, but i like it and think it looks great. Phos and nitrate are undetectable on my test kits. Presumably being used up, or skimmed out before breaking down.
  5. Thanks all, really pleased with the whole tank at the moment. Starting to get some nice fish as well, the PBT is going great, and recently put in a long nose butterfly (lovely fish). A new clam and plating acro as well. No secret KM. learn as much as you can, talk to the people on this board, buy the best equipment you can afford, and wait, wait, wait. All of a sudden things will click, and the tank suddenly comes of age. 2 bits of equip that made a difference were the streams, and the calcium reactor. .....and lots of maintenance, water changes, etc.

    Sand

I studied Iron sands during my metallury degree, and although the Fe is bound within the Magnetite (or within the Titanomagnetite in NZs case) a small amount can leach into water. Of more concern in a tank situation is its magnetic properties. It is highly magnetic, and there is no way I'd want that around any of my pumps.

    Sand

The black sand on west coast beaches is Iron based. You don't want it in your tank!!
