  1. Lighting depends on the type of anemone you are going to keep. Some, but not all need metal halide lighting. Others are just fine under fluros. Most shops sell them using common names. If you can find out the scientific that is best. Ben, I will bring my anemone book up to the shop on Sunday so you can ID the anemone if you want. Has good info on feeding, lighting, water movement.
  2. If you want a stand for multipule tanks then give Capital Racking in Greenmount, Auckland a call. They make free standing metal racking, adjustable shelves. I use it in my shop for tanks and other stuff. Costs about $60 for a 2.4m upright and $50 for a 1200mm shelf that is 450mm wide. That size shelf can hold abot 150kg. They make lots of different sizes.
  3. Presonally I think it is wrong to put tropical fish in coldwater but I have heaps of customers who have and who buy them from other stores who have them in coldwater tanks. Just buy a damn heater!!! What I want to know is, what are the fish generally considered suitable for putting in a coldwater tank?
  4. Glass tanks are cheap. Why not just buy a new small tank and sell the 620? You could probably get $150+ for it and that would buy a 3ft with drilled holes and overflows.
  5. These sell because some marine retailers in Auckland have, or had, these setups for sale. They just try and cash in on the nemo craze. $$$ now to keep someones kid happy till the fish dies.
  6. Guess nemo ain't going to make it home then! I had a clownfish jump out of my tank once and land in my hands while I was sitting on the couch. Wrasses would have to be the number one jumpers.
  7. Bullseye might be a phosphate buffer like some of the other buffers for freshwater.
  8. I run my tank on powerheads and cannister filters. I would have sponges on the powerheads. If you clean them regularly they will not be a problem. If you have a sea anemone it is a matter of when, not if, it walks into one. If they are the AquaOne powerheads without sponges, I think you can buy them as a part (sponge and filter attachment). Am I correct in assuming that when you say you have heaps of coral it is just coral rock not living coral at this stage?
  9. Even though you don't like the idea, a sump would be best. If it is designed right you would hardly even see it. Drill a hole in the bottom of the tank in the centre for your overflow pipe and another hole for your water return pipe. You can then hide everything else in the sump out of sight. It would also give extra water volume.
  10. I had one. It jumped. It died. I wonder how many unexplained fish deaths are fish that have jumped and killed themselves hitting glass lids? Wrasses in general are jumpers. I have lost three out of a tank that is 95% covered with lids.
  11. Hmmm, 1960's book no longer in print, must be good. Sounds like an old book out of copyright. Get a copy and let us know.....
  12. You should buy the JBL step 1,2 and 3. I am selling them at such great prices!!! As far as iodine goes, softies use it up at a rapid rate. If you add more than is naturally found in saltwater, their expansion and growth rates increase. It also helps corals (and anemones) adjust to new light levels.
  13. I would, and do use a surface skimmer on my tank. The fluval surface skimmer was crap. Atman do a cheap Ehiem copy that I find works well. I use JBL PhosEx to keep my phosphate levels down and would suggest something like that in your cannister. It works well for me. Believe me, you need a skimmer. A cheap skimmer is better than no skimmer. You need good lighting, even for mushrooms. If it is just a single tube then I would go with a PowerGlo tube and replace it every 6 months. If you add a second, a Marine Glo would be good. My tank runs on powerheads, cannister filters, T5's and a 10 year old skimmer. The lights are new and the difference is amazing. Corals that were not growing are growing and those that were are growing even faster.
  14. I just had a 4ft made. Got it made in 10mm with no top bracing instead of 6mm. More than doubled the price.
  15. Nice tank. Hey Ben, I will pick some up and take it up to the shop (I need some as well). Michael
  16. I had a look. Nice and big is about all that is good about it. I think the substrate is totally wrong. Big coral chunks. Will never look clean and white. Seems to have a dump bucket which would probably blow anything fine around. The corals should start looking good when they settle in and start growing. Most of the fish were hiding but it always takes time for them to get used to people. I would love that much space to play with.

    CLASS

What good is a curry without a bit of spice? It would be so boring if we all agreed. I am all for the lowest form of wit.....
  18. They make tanks for a few shops. I used to get them but they were a bit out the way for me.
  19. Rainbow fish. Not cheap but can be colourful, peaceful and hardy.
  20. At least you have a tank to transfer it into. The fun really begins when you move house. I moved a single system consisting of 2x4ft curved tanks and a three tank sump. That's when you suddenly regret getting those big tanks.

    DIY topoff

Yes, it pays to keep wifey happy. My partner has finally agreed that getting a new tank is a good idea and said I may as well drill some holes in the floor for the filter (sort of helps that I have already water damaged it).

    hermits

I would steer well clear of any crabs except hermits. Normal ones hide all the time.

Wouldn't a airtight jerry can, sitting above the sump, with a 1/2" small pipe out the bottom into the water work the same? Water level would drop, air would go up pipe, water would come out of container, sump level would then rise stopping more water entering the container. No need for a float switch or an airpump.

    Up dated Pics

Very nice! How long have you had the brain coral with the leather coral and fish sitting on it?
  25. Get some furan. It will fix it. Do some water tests as well.
