    Dying brain?

I had a similiar one to your once. Had a little accident (nuff said) and most of it died off. Small areas of tissue did survive and regrew.

    Reefbase

I have used some in my tank, mixed in with my other substrate. It does look nice. The Red Sea stuff is expensive. The other is supplied by Brooklands so any pet store should be able to order it in for you. Looks exactly the same, just not in a pretty bag.
  3. If you want a small predator, a marine betta is a good option. These guys are an awsome sight when hunting live food like glass shrimps. They swim at the shrimp, point their two front fins at it, bend their body into a U and start shaking their tail. As soon as the shrimp looks at the tail it's all over in one quick bite. If they are being defensive, they swim tail first at you with their fins spread. Their tail looks like an eels head.
  4. Very reasonable price IMO. Looks alot nicer than most systems you see on Trade Me.
  5. Most/all marine predators you buy will eat dry/frozen food anyway. Why just one, most are not like your freshwater predators and will happily live with other fish that are not small enough to eat. I used to have a big tank with a large wrasse, two different large groupers, dog face puffer, two smaller spotted puffers (these guys chased each other all the time) and a large blue tang.

    asw brew

You could keep it forever, but you could do the same with NSW. I would not use ASW stright away. I needs time for the salt to disolve fully.
  7. That's weird that you clowns won't go near the anemone. Mine lived in a finger coral till I got them one. Moved into the anemone as soon as it was put in the tank.
  8. That's crazy. Sand and salt mix must be cheap in the US. Retail here would be about $1800 for 800lbs of sand and $1300 for salt mix.
  9. I have REAL issues with Arcadia T5 tubes, and fittings for that matter. I have gone through a stack of bulbs and none have lasted more than six months. They have either blown or started pulsing. For that matter, I have gone through four electronic ballasts as well. Lets see if the two new ones I have just got last any longer. I run the tubes for about 13 hours a day so that is only 5000 hours till I have to replace because they have blown. Normal fluros last years before blowing.
  10. My old Arcadia used to go out once or twice a day.
  11. Suck on the hose that returns water to the tank.
  12. Would LOVE to know if a shop sold him that setup. Could you get a worse shaped tank.
  13. Mine was 10+ and dropped to 0-0.25 in no time.
  14. I have one, and only one. It is the only type of mushroom that I have that has not done well. The other three type breed like crazy. If I move this one into the light to much it starts shrinking.

  16. Would be interesting to run some water tests on the tank. Prehaps stress causes the anemone to divide?
  17. You would have to poor in a lot of fresh water to upset things. What quantity did you put in? Reef did a major freshwater to up (unintended) with minimal/no ill effect. I would suspect the carbon. If any carbon powder landed on the anemone it would close up as the powder iritates corals. Did you put filter wool between the carbon and water return?
  18. If there is enough water movement you shouldn't but if there is not you will get the film in the dead spots. You collect a lot of small bubbles on the surface with a very small amount of surface scum.
  19. Ben, your tank doesn't count. Big decision. Continue with the AR620 or cut your losses now. I think that in a short period of time you will be very disillusioned with this tank. If you take the filter off to add a skimmer, that sort of defeats the purpose of buying an all in one system. If you haven't used the tank, I would box it up and take it back to the shop. They should exchange it for you. There are some old threads (last month?) discussing setups and the general opinion was a three to four foot minimum tank size. Most prefering the four foot size. More to buy short term but will save you on upsizing everything else later. Lighting not important for FOWLR.
  20. Seems to me that you just don't have enough filtration. You have around 1400 litres of water so a powerhead, cannisters and internal are not near enough. Your powerhead does 1200l/h, internal 2000l/h and cannister 1200l/hx2. Those are the theoretical flow rates when they are clean so most of the time they will be below that. Sounds like you have a lot of fish in there and I bet they are big eaters. I would suggest a BIG airpump and some BIG airstones. This will improve the water turnover and greatly increase the oxygen levels in the water. Run heaps of carbon to remove any discolouration from the water. If that does not work then you probably need another filter. I take it your issue with pH is it dropping all the time. Don't go anywhere near peat. That will just bring it down. Put some grit in a net bag and put it somewhere with high water flow (like in the cannister).
  21. Its's up to 25K now.
  22. Just use a powerhead with a sponge on it. I know a lot of people hate sponges but better safe than sorry. All it takes is a couple of tenticles through a grate and you know what happens..... If you want it to grow, feed it once a week.
  23. Agreed. The spheres are very nice. Brooklands do them.
  24. Thanks for the plug Snowman. Via Aqua was the old name for the Aqua One tanks. They are made in China by Commodity Axis. If you buy large enough quantities they rebrand them for you. Kongs (the importer)markets them under the Aqua One brand in NZ and Australia. As far as getting a AR620T, how long are your arms. mine a long (matches the rest of me 197cm) and I fine deep tanks a pain in the butt to clean. Can you reach the bottom easily? Fish also prefer a longer swim length so take into account the type of fish you want to keep. I think a longer tank gives a more natural look and is easier to aquascape. Deep tanks tend to look like everything is piled up.
  25. Any lower north island, south island stores to list?
