Its something you hear in the middle of so many heated discussions about flow/lighting/ etc etc should this phrase be banned...... does it actually add anything usefull to the discussion

have it on vid will try and cut the bit for you he is a BIG fan of scientific testing... hates wild unproven claims..... thinks if a vendor cannot provide scientific evidencce, they should quietly go back to their before/after photoshop desks heheh true i guess, i also think vendors should provide evidence of what and how it works..........

    Go the trademe

Eric Bournman sp? says Do not put things, such as mud, into your refugia.....
  10. its not all the same different sand (from coral reefs in different locations) looks quite different Kelly Tarlton (sp?) imported from a special location to get the nice white looking sand for their recent sting ray tank........ I could find out where if you are interested but suspect you would probably need to import about 500-1000kg to make it worth while....

Great advertising for Mr Purple Tang's online trademe based live stock business.....
  13. you don't put nuke plants near volcanoes or fault lines.... It will be far north if anywhere........ and it will happen in my lifetime, its the only way electric cars can happen....
  14. understand my tank has a center brace of acrylic, due to bigger sump pump the water is now above this, meaning the surface in one half is not skimming... i am going to cut back the overflow slightly to solve this and keep the whole tank flowing nicely...... def go the biggest pipes you can
  15. I use this site a lot for wind forecasts for sailing, but it can also be usefull to see when rain is forecast up to 72 hours out. http://www.metvuw.com/forecast/forecast.php?type=rain&region=nz&tim=K
  16. http://www.trademe.co.nz/structure/show ... ber=346683 Living in Ponsonby its highly unlikely will be off line that long, in fact we get a refund from power comapnay of $70 if out for more then 3 hours.... but I think a 2.2kw unit for around $600 is a bloody good deal.... and I love the Serenity

    water flow

yes but most are noisy and take up space above your tank, i like the cieling mounted surge tanks tho..... still streams are pretty cool.....

    Sad Week

When you think about it a Q Tank is quite a cheap thing. you could put everything in there, even corals etc for a month or 2
  19. this has been documented elsewhere as working well, and the dehumidifer is rated to take high work loads, i run one constanly on the yacht over winter to get rid of the mositure inside. Peter

    salt water changes

my rule is 33% every month....... do not think it matters if its all done at once....
  21. a smart online retailer will stick to the knitting. Clownfish, Chromis, blue and yellow tangs etc...... The easy to move stuff...... expenses can be offset if there is a high packing fee... but it is a different model then the corrent importers, as you will prob make more per fish/coral then the wholesale wholsalers, you would not have to sell as many, could be small, dynamic, niche....
  22. Pet Planet you have a very good retail feel in the pet industry I think. I believe that right now, while we all enjoy rsiing house prices etc etc, we are less price sensitive and are happy to browse the retail stores looking for new fish/corals, trying to get the occasional deal, but as the economy turns down, we will become a lot more price sensitive..... Pets are a discreetionary spend.
  23. On a more serious note I would like to discuss this on a thread likely to survive. I, pies and others have called for a long time for direct sales, It seems that Mr Purple Tang has taken heed of our bleatings and is selling direct on the net via trademe. What will this do to the industry? My thoughts, This will put more money into the pockets of the importers... hopefully this will mean they import more diversity etc....... but will increase there handling costs, expect to see a handling charge if you only buy 1 thing.... Take money away from the retail chain. its a zero sum game. Make corals cheaper for buyers...... Make it easier for out of AKLers to buy nice pieces.... other peopls thoughts?
  24. get one of the temp controllers jetski sells, run the through pump all the time, and have the cooler/heaters on the controller... you will prob need heaters in chch! in the deep winter, the controller is very usefull to avoid big hysteresis loops...
  25. when my return pump is off the sump is 2 inches from spilling over... if the skimmer goes off at the same time, I have 1/2 inch left...... tis time for a custom sump.
