  1. If we have time, after the first DVD I have one on Setting up a mysid production unit http://www.seahorse.org/library/articles/mysisCulturing.shtml it interesting to see how he physically plumbed it and the size it actually takes up!

    Acid Sea

imagine the significance and speed of change after a large asteroid impact.... think golf of mexico big....... in some shape or form, something will evolve and adapt to fill any niche.....
  3. well there are no excuses jetski for the NZMAS meeting this Wednesday, its 6:30pm at the Victoria Crusing Clubrooms, westhaven, see map in the thread.
  4. i did dive around komodo island / flores etc WAY BROWN but amazing reefs! and the water is crystal clear! perhaps the colourfull ones we love are the freaks of the sea!

    catching fish

Fishtrap - no issues... so good i just got one..... i would have had to tear down the tank to catch the yellow tang.. and if is a decent size you can leave the fish in for 24 hours till ready to move... net places a time frame on, and you get more and more excited chasing fish around destroying your tank!

    Reefs Reef Tank

no there are other factors, such as your ability to keep these animals and make them happy, your skimmer etc etc.... reef you are a great reef keeper and have invested in knowledge and technology.... re Please keep to my question, and don't divert it to my reef keeping ability, that will just get us both banned! I just want to know how this one product (that costs quite a bit.. and which you do have an interest in being the importer) actually works..... minerals and trace elements just does not cut it for me..... can you please tell me and those considering trying the product whats in it and how it works... its only fair, you have asked brendan/zeo the same questions in the past..... so as the little old lady in the burger king add asks... WHERES THE BEEF? or in this case WHATS THE MINERALS

    Reefs Reef Tank

yes , I would hate to think it had lots of say calcium and iodine and iron in it, and i did not realise how much i was adding! I guess I am really asking you to prove to me its not snake oil.... I am sure you understand my line of thought... its just like zeo... whats in it please... but I am sure there is something in it that the corals respond too.....
  8. the east coast of malaysia and tioman island (about 20-30km off the nmainland) have the most amazing colours i have ever seen diving! Awesome.

    Reefs Reef Tank

I am hearing the same story, people say the reef solutions seems to have a positive effect.... whats in it and at what concentrations? which of the trace elements do you think produce the greatest +ve effect? I also believe like reef that a dosing pump approach would give the best results......

what exactly are you dosing ? what Trace elements? what rate of dose etc?

    Reefs Reef Tank

so whats the conclusion pies.... you think 400 or 250 are cheaper "overall" for your setup..... I am staying 400W and currently have low K used bulbs..... will be moving to brand new 6.5 k bulbs for growth.....
  12. IMHO lots of reefs look brown in person... the collecters collect the "colourfull ones.. from the brown reefs! exceptions are places like Tioman island - reefs are technicolour, - like photoshop piccies! poor knights island - awesome - and temperate water! ie. if you choose the 10 ten dive sites you will see lots of colour.... average reef = quite a few brown corals!
  13. its a test match, a little bit of blind side action to be expected!
  14. I congratulate all of you for staying at the table and playing nicely with the toys....... I am having more faith in this FNZAS community every day........ great discussion, Reef that RC post sounds a great "theory" very elegant... I can also see the merits of bombers BB tanks, and high flow and massive wet skimming, just another way to remove the organics before they break down.... I can see why he believes that Zeovit is more of an ambulance at the bottom of the cliff solution........ BB are not for everyone however... and i am not judging anyone who is using zeo systems!

mmmm I see radium HPS ballasts? I know for me the 400W bulbs are just cheaper! did you do a power vs bulb coast spreadsheet? wondering if i am paying that much more in power costs to have another 150w of power through it over bulbs life?
  16. nano tank... nano fish bi - colour? scotter bleaney! they are cool and mine is pretty small! baby clown... move to your big tank as it grows.....
  17. layton - i edited last bit in, whjat about the ammount of Fe?

  19. well lots of people have SEEN the zeo give off a white coloured bacterial looking "slime" during the pump backwash cycle... and they also observe that the corals seem to "FEED" on this (at least opening more as its realesead) I postulate that the white slime bacteria are both feed to the corals (maybe a dosing of iron , you guys say how corals like iron but seemingly only up to the point that bacteria like it more then its bad for tank.... imagine corals geeting lots of iron to colour up blues etc... but it is not free, comes attached to bacteria, corals can use/eat but the free algae in the tank cannot touch!) the only "problem" i have with this is the HUGE ammount of iron that the used tested zeolith lost on average per day.. I do not have any clue if the bialogical process i have postulated above could use that much Fe ????????? need big help her other wise theory out da door.
  20. the little gobies that dig a hole and live symbiotically with a shrimp ... that allowed in???? the little bright yellow gobie would be cool, I agree for a true nano i would go with REALLY small fish.... Peter
  21. Reef you observed the following is it possible that the ammount of iron Zeovit leaches is as big as the direct iron supplement, however the zeovit free iron is more able to be bacterially used, ie so that the free iron (which i believe is allready trying to bind with phosphate) is more easily exported into the bacterial culture (i am thinking just size here, bacteria are huge compared with ions.....) and once attached to bacteria they are exported via skimmate as the bacteria die off....... i imagine carbon could also bind this bacteria or kill it, so that it goes out of the system in changed carbon/skimmate??? I am really starting to think that you must test not just the water , but rate of iron release in zeo AND iron in skimmate and carbon export.... just imagine if it leaches 100ug per day, but the uptake via bacteria is almost 100ug.... and there metabolism is highly regulated by iron....... in fact perhaps the bacteria are the feedback loop Layton? Wasp i believe that the article you have linked to on wetmedia tells most, maybe 70%, of the zeo story..... as you have been saying all the time... It is very possible that in simply measuring the loss of iron from used zeolith that you ASSUME that is going straight into the water coloumn.... (this was how i believe the research was done, not a water coloumn test?) What if there where bacteria living on the surface of the zeo that needed both phosphate ions and Fe irons to live and mulitply.... the iron has left the zeo but is bound with the bacteria now, and WILL not show on your water coloumn test! wasp would be right, simply adding iron is not the answer... because perhaps zeo does not simply release riron, perhaps it is taken from the zeo bacterially!
  22. The venue is the Victoria Crusing Club. Wednesday July the 6th at 6:30pm Here is a little map http://www.wises.co.nz/map/default.asp?street=WESTHAVEN+Drive&suburb=FREEMANS+BAY&town=Auckland&sttype=&id=63162|2&svctype=1&zoom=4&mapwhich=0&mapsize=2&width=512&height=512&businesses=1&brad=25&color=-1&filled=0&routemethod=0&s_id=&radius=&a=0&e=2666120&n=6483400&move=true&zoomin=true its on the roard, just under the bridge, on the re claimed land, if you get to the Royal Yacht Squadran building you have gone to far. We have a bar so see you all around 6:15, we start dvd at 6:35 ish
  23. you used the zeo AA cookie?
  24. so a bit of zeolith and some vodka may do the trick...... especially if you could get a handfull of someone elses used media to "seed" bacteria in the reacter? I would be willing to try that experiment....
