Pies.. why would you "consider" something you think is BS... can't wait for this one.....
-
in particular what ones do you think you are benefitting from? what is the release rate? how do you test to see if the mud is all "used up" ? nothing personal joe.... I am a real cynic on this particullar product, nothing reads true to me.. i do not understand how any mineral source could be self regulating to dose a tank at the correct rate... looks like BS to me
-
its an interesting moral/ethical developement.. will possibly only split the hobby into two camps..... I am more of the bigger skimmer and phosphate remover then chemical manipulation school...... would love to just live close to nice clean sea water source and do 10-15% change per day and no skimmer...... i think bomber on RC does this as he lives florida queys sp?

Radium can do 400W Radium 20k bulbs for $125 + gst i think and 1000W Radium 20k bulbs for $250 + gst no 1000W 14kers that he knows of.... please note that the research is showing corals actually grow faster at 6.5k and that the corelation between growth and intensity is established, but there is no significant link between spectrum and growth rates, its just we like the look of some corals under blueish lights....... some of the borwn corals look awesome under UV lights filmed with special cameras! anyway thats why i like the 400W ters i think the bulbs are very good price, and i have a ready source of used 6.5k bulbs for almost nothing that still have a lot of kick in em! Also not i have now picked up sawbench and some other toys i will be posting the stuff on my own reflecters soon. Sanjay has done some good work on reflecter testing... a good reflecter makes a HUGE difference in the spread of the light into your tank. I want to try and get a better spread of light then the current reflecters or my arcadia units gave! arcadias going into q room.....
-
I really like the screw in 400W single end MH bulbs and ballasts etc I feel that they are simpler and more reliable connection thent he double enders....... and you can get all the bits and bulbs REAL CHEAP right here in NZ at radium lighting, its simple cheap and no issues...... you can get 10k 14k and 20k bulbs from these guys

Any product with the word "miracle" in it ignites my BS detector....

my purple was very thin, badly coloured and had ripped fins.... the yellow just would not let it graze/eat properly,, very violent physical attacks, i finally caught it after such an attack lying on its side.... it has over the past 10 days recovered very quickly, fins healed well, more colour etc, but it is still very thin, and i have to wonder if it will make it trough... it is now freely grazing tho and I am happy i have given it the best chance it has by removing the yello... i imagine if i put in a small yellow the purple could beat it up! still i have a lemon peel that provides the moving yellow in the tank and it seems willing to defend itself but very friendly. Also found a missing tomatoe clown living for past 3 weeks in the sump, prob under the skimmer, funny watching it re-establish its relationshiop wuith the male, and re establishing pecking order in tank, i was 100% sure it had jumped over the back of the tank and was lost forever... been a good fish day! bad fish day was the chromis that went through my iwaki, demolishing an impeller and almost ripping the fish in half... it was promptly dispatched to a better after life I keep having to remind myself how artificial an aquarium environment is to the fishes natural habitat, but also how many fish fall prey on the reefs to others and preditors! or even collectors

sorry - lots of gold diggers up here in JAFA land...
-
nice to see how civil scientific investigation can be....
-
some fish just not get on, my yellow tang just had to go as was becoming a bully to who ever the next biggest fish was! Purple tangs are too expensive to loose to yellow tangs... yellow seemed happy living in another tank now..... purple tang happy and recovering nicely. i reckon you have to just mix n match...

westhaven charge me $480 per month just for the yacht berth... then u have to add racing expenses, breakages, crew costs, entry fees, heartbreak = priceless its $50 for a round of gold in AKL - this is not a massively expensive hobby, thank god for mastercard 8)

this trademe trader has GREAT prices on Electrical bits! http://www.trademe.co.nz/structure/show_member_listings.asp?member=2082 his distribution boards and RCD's breakers etc are a good price..... my spare room is full of bits for the fish room, its going to have to be built soon so i can get my house back.... Tax man will want proff of power use.. may need meter after all according to my accountant....
-
How much did the check Meter cost you? and what are you using at the moment on a daily basis? I am tempted by a meter, but i can get a clamp meter off trademe for about $80 and my sparkie tells me they are as good as a fluke for domestic stuff.....
-
there are non telecom routes available.... in the North island WGTN/AKL that take almost completely diff paths...... united networks now vector??? not sure of south island situation....
-
OK got a 2nd 400W ballast yesterday and temp reflecter units..... till i make my diamond ones.... I HAve TO SAY THAT 400w IS WAY BETTER IF YOU HAVE A DEEP TANK.. my tank is 28inchs deep and it makes a huge difference to the corals at the bottom which are loving it.... and all this with 6k bulbs...
-
DR... we made over 4 billion in payments from DR location... worked like a dream.... no single vender can ever provide a redundant solution.. use multiple comms vendors!
-
possible a smaller cap is inside what you call the igniter on smaller setups?
-
cookie... maybe so with 150W system, I have no experience at that level, but in systems above that I doubt that the voltage could be held high and smooth without one...... it is posible that the ballast does not match the bulb in your 250W setup, Layton have you seen a non cap bigger tehn 150W setup?
-
it could yes..... lower then optimal voltage would lower PAR outputs (read intensity) i am unsure about spectral effect, imagine that lower volatges would effect this too..... as the electrons not being excited in same way as when running optimal voltage.... caps are cheap, radium on northshore are da guys.... they have everything you need for MH systems and sell at trade as they are not a shopfront..... you can get a full 400W system, ballast and reflecter for $267 incl GST + cost of bulb... my tank loves the 400W the corals at the bottom are opening much better now! Peter
-
before replacing bulb, consider replacing the capacitor in ballast as it maybe not holding charge and this will cause them to go out... caps fail too! I had one fail so bad it caught fire! Peter

true reef... its not scientifically proven, and there are def not published metrics documenting the rate of removal and capacity of the zeo.... or the exact process that is taking place, tho it seem pretty clear to me now that elevated iron levels pretty much show what and why things are happening. the zeo should be way cheaper as well, its used by the tonne in waste processing..... its ok if you have a 100L tank, but i now have 600L and the next tank will have over 2000L in the sump/display...... it will be.. once we find a source, just like subbing in food grade calcium hydroxide instead of BRAND X Kalc.... I can buy 25KG of kalc for $80 then i meet an electroplater guy who says so what, i can get that bag for about $40 8) sea water is basic stuff, all the trace elements are cheap and cheerfull I bet the zeo is sold to these guys for next to nothing.... its the pet trade game... abit like the party pills that cost $0.20c to make and sell to punters for $10 or more each! each to his/her own drug of choice.
-
thats what eric bournman says..... stick with the basics.... only minimal additives and only if you can test the resultant concentrations.... the shops hate it, the basics are cheap cheerfull and proven, the snakeoil is Miraculous, Unproven, and EXPENSIVE I have a much better feel for what zeovit is doing now, and feel that there are other ways to achive the same result..... each to their own, zeovit seems a proven way to lower phosphate and amonia byproducts... He presents the data in a simple easy to understand format on the DVD, in his paper he is documenting the exact experiement he did so others can fully interprit his dataset his conclusions are Our experiment shows no evidence for any of the espoused benefits of a plenum (reviewed by Goemans 1999). Instead our results suggest that any benefits seen are a direct consequence of the presence of the sediments themselves rather than the void space beneath it. We show that even among identical tanks set up in a laboratory without any live animals, there can be dramatic differences in performance from one aquarium to the next (see Figures 2 & 3 above). Our results highlight the problem with any study lacking proper replication, and in which there are no controls. We argue that anecdotal evidence is simply presentation of an opinion in cases such as this, and more than 5 years of heated debate has resulted from the staunch defense of these opinions. We urge hobbyists to develop a good 'BS' detector that will allow you to question information presented to you without any experimental evidence to support it. if you follow his paper, anyone who has an inch of sand on the bottom of there tank is running a sandbed..... he is not trying to say it works better then any other product, rather trying to define how well different sandbeds work, re sand grain size and deepth etc... interestingly fine sand works much better then course and deepth does NOT have a great effect... Reef - come along DVD about an hour long and I think its well worth watching. this will be a TOTALLY non political event alois... DVD, discussion and tea/bikkies... everyone is welcome! NZMAS is not going to make a political statement, back any shop or importer etc etc etc its going to take 24 months of great informative meetings before everyone in the hobby sees that its not going to be a beat up session and that NZMAS will tolerate NO COMMERCIAL biasis or product marketing. thats why i am getting a neutral venue where everyone will feel comfortable.. this may not be the case if we choose someones home.... hopefull in time this may change, but for now... nuetral is good... it is not a formal meeting of NZMAS its just a simple presentation. LFS owners, hobbists, importers... you do not have to declare what or who you are, just come and listern it is not cut and dried, the great thing about science is that there are always alternative views with strong supporters.. the even better thing about science, is that it is based on experimental data, not a single tank experience. the presenter does not attack those who have had great single tank results, he just expalins that its impossible, from a scientific perspective, OR A MARKETING ONE to state one tank anadoteal evidence as scientific fact.....
-
thats the guy and the experiment, he is a very good presenter....

Pies ok post your data seriously, be nice to see some real data on this topic any life in the NSW will die off quick once oxygen is not freely exchanging... I seriously doubt tho that there is enough life in it for this resulting dieoff to cause much of a spike in any nitrates etc, but it would be nice for this to be experiementally proven........
