  3. Sure, but you can still get your media clogging with mechanical filtration first, some quicker than others

    Fishroom Temp

Well thats what i thought, well pretty close to that. Didn'tt think there would be such a difference. Might check round the door to make sure there isn't cold air coming in and check the range on the temp controller. Will leave it over night again and re check in the morning.
  5. How many airstones do you have hooked up to it??
  6. The idea of filter media is to provide a large surface are for bacteria to grow on. You also have to consider how easy it will clog with dibris eg filter wool or sponge can be biological media but clogs quickly hence why most people use it as mechanical filtration. "Bio balls" have a large surface area, are made from plastic and don't clog as easy. So in saying that you can use anything that would not put any bad stuff back into the tank. Here are a few ideas thick poly netting pumice gravel plastic pill containers broken pots Cost will come into it, depends on what you can get your hands on

    Fishroom Temp

Just playing with the temp of a fishroom. Heating is a fan heater hooked up to a siemens controller. No other heating present. There are also two fans blowing air round to stop temp layering. Air temp is about 30 at top and 28 at bottom but tanks only seam to get to about 25, this just doesn't seam right. Question is to get a temp of say 25 in the tanks what would the room temp have to be?? What are the temps in your own room. Both in the tank and air temp.
  8. Hokitika Zoo has a huge display tank with them in, the eels are huge some 30cm thick at least.

    Fry in Peat

So they shouldn't throw different colour's but because of miss labeling etc people may have crossed them in the past??

    Fry in Peat

Have been wondering that, not with the Rachovii but with the Korthausae, have seen yellow in NZ but have not heard as much about the Red. Is this because the strains (Korth red, rach black) have been mixed or is the color form just a recessive gene/trait or because they are found in different locations??

    Fry in Peat

They are beria, early days for sure. The problem i had was hatching them, raising so far has been pretty good.

    Fry in Peat

Yeah, would be keen to try to. I ended up tipping the water into another container, not the cleanest way but did get all but 5, left about half original water in and toped up with fresh stuff.

    Fry in Peat

Just wondering how you all split the fry from the peat after hatching. Have not had a problem till now as my hatchs have been poor. Ok when there is 15 ish and under as i pipette them out. Just checked the new lot out and at a rough guess there is 50+

    Plywood tank

Labour would be free also Not sure why everyone is trying to steer Olly away from doing this, Olly has asked how to make one and pretty much everyone has basically said make it out of glass. Different if it was Glass Tank vrs Plywood but its not. Don't see a problem with this idea, there are a large number of tanks made of materials other than glass when you get to the larger sizes. Bob at Redwood in Chch makes them, all are larger sizes and work well. Personally i think glass is not as good when you get over about 2 - 2.5m in length as the weight is really high and also requires someone who really knows what they are doing when it comes to making tanks. Did Warren not make a big one out of ply??? not sure but worth a try.

    Killie Virgin

Each of those questions would have a different answer depending on the species. Take a look at http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/killie ... 28518.html heaps of great info there. Are limited to what is in NZ but still some pretty cool types..
