Silverdollarboy2 reacted to Ira in Other filters for Marine tank?
There are probably some cases where you could use a canister just for mechanical filtration and clean it frequently. But even for that a sump is probably going to be easier to clean the filters. Next time I build a new tank I think I'm definitely going with a big sump.

Silverdollarboy2 reacted to livingart in New shark in the 1,700 litre tank.
Had a very juvenile School Shark (Tope) brought in today, had been caught in a flounder net and had a bite mark on its right hand gill.
Have placed it in the big temperaste tank but had to remove the hermit crabs as they wouldn't leave it alone to settle in properly.

You don't have to. And sumps aren't filters. Though they can contain filters. HOBs, Canisters and submersible filters can be used, but they're basically obsolete for marine tanks.

Not sure why you'd want a tank like this, but...Whatever.
And yes, T8s should be fine, if they're old they tend to produce more algae, but as far as the fish go that's not an issue.

Did a bit of work today.
Flourite dark is in, 3 x 7kg bag, with each bag washed 7 times...
Got sump lights now, some of those push leds, stuck to the underside of the cabinet
Tested out the 25ft marina aquavac for filling, works a treat!
Did a run / leak test, all ok except the pipe fitting straight from the drain was leaking, was concerned at how loose it was when i assembled it, with the heavy union and rest of the pipework suspended by this joint there was no way it could hold its weight. At first i used tape, but was still leaking. Used a bit of sealant, better, but minor leakage. Went nuts with the sealant this time around and ill leave it longer to ensure it seals this time!
Oh and the pumps in these (aquaone moray 3600) is noisy as hell. I can hear it humming from upstairs. I removed the base and placed in on one of the filter sponges, shortened the outlet hose as it was too long and pulling the pump over on its side when not suction cupped to the sump floor. Need to find a better solution like a mouse mat or something as the sponge will just collect gunk.
And the spider wood floats, so have to wait for it to sink
One thing im not decided on is heater in the overflow or in the sump. Currently in the overflow, its nice and tidy. but it bugs me slightly that i cant see its on light when i want to.

Make sure to filter it properly and cycle it.
Don't buy any more goldfish, at full size 3 will be enough.
Invest in a test kit, it will prove very useful.

I agree with above. The tank is overloaded and this will ensure that the fish are not happy. Overfeeding also causes stress on the fish because the excess food causes bacterial blooms that use up a lot of the oxygen.

I recently bought some Gardneri Akure killifish from Rodney.
They settled in well to their new home and ate Repashy first try.
On their third day they laid eggs.
The eggs are almost ready to hatch as I can see little eyes in them
Hopefully they hatch.

Silverdollarboy2 reacted to Morfin2 in What to do when on tank water
Thanks to all of you - unfortunately I mentioned to my partner that tetras are good to go and so the cold water is out and apparently tetras are going to be the thing. I guess at least I can get a nice shoal in a 300l . I can feel my aquarium addiction ramping up again.......
