  1. it's not a peppermint shrimps primary diet. in fact, the true peppermint shrimp is not even assured to eat aipstasia. there is another shrimp that looks similar to the true peppermint shrimp and apparently in the USA, is often sold as a 'peppermint' shrimp - but they don't touch aipstasia. the true peppermint shrimp is "Lysmata wurdemanni" thats the one you want. if you're clever enough, you could even have a go at breeding them http://www.reefkeeping.com/issues/2002-10/nftt/index.php
  2. heheheee, ya can't beat 3 sheets of 12mm ply and 1 sheet of 10mm poly i've had sledgehammers demolishing walls in the lounge and kitchen and not so much as a shimmer on the surface of the water
  3. that actually really sux, a hard fish to keep and you were doing really well - only to get a reachy by an anemone. major downer. gonna get another?
  4. i certainly hope you're still going to place a thin layer of poly under the tank still!!! if not, thats asking for BIG trouble.
  5. hehehee, the stuff you sent me last time is growing like mad, i must have an excessive amount of nutrients
  6. dont take my remarks a bad way, just checking how you came to that result - then again its not rocket science good work so far, looking forward to more info as it comes to hand. i replaced 1kg of (jansens) carbon today
  7. So to summarise, so far we have: Jansens brand: 0.02 Aqualight: 0.38 Rowa: 0.29 I assume the RODI water was tested and confirmed to be 0 before adding carbon? Or did you use the same batch of RODI for all 3 tests? That does seem a large difference in the latter two, I suggest retesting all 3 with the same RODI at the same time? Do colourometers need calibrating?
  8. yes, but it seems to stick to glass better than the acrylic so concentrate of creating the seal against the glass. alternately you could look at creating a removeable overflow like i made...
  9. yeah this is difficult to do. i found even more so when i had a centre brace running right across the top of where my baffles are! it is a messy job with silicon, if you get it wrong and have to move it silicon goes everywhere. best thing to do is mark on the outside of the tank, 3 vertical lines on each side of the tank where you want the baffles to go. the first baffle is easiest of course as its accessible from both sides. when you silicon the next in, run a bead of silicon about 2mm outside the 'marked' vivid line. when you put the baffle in, push it evenly so it spreads the silicon across the entire edge of the baffle to your original marked line. make sure the baffles are a couple of mm smaller (on each side) than the width of the tank (in other words dont make it a tight fit or you will find 1. it is difficult to get the baffle in and 2. you'll have a bad join, its the silicon thats doing the sealing) i also gave about 1.5" gap between baffles, 1" is just that much more difficult to work with - and also if you drop anything between the baffles and need to get it out!
  10. glueing baffles in more difficult than glass? i would have gone acrylic if it were cheaper than glass. very solid and durable plus drilling is a bonus (not that you cant with glass obviously, just easier) just be wary of the thickness of acrylic you get, and just like glass it still needs bracing.
  11. it don't look that bloody good up here either damn it... :-?
  12. I just want to do a water change today then I'll take some pic's tomorrow. there are some visible changes, most only slight but definately noticeable. most corals are lighter (rather than 'coloured') however the poc is a much nicer pink (rather than brownish/pink), the milli is starting to get some good growth and greener tips (it is only a frag but easy to see) another acro (not sure type) is getting nice blue colouring about 1/5 of the way down from the tips. Will get some photo's up soon
  13. i love montipora capricornis, keen on a coloured one too if anyone (in auckland) has one. my tan coloured one is growing nicely, just boring colour. maybe if i just inject it with food colouring 8)
  14. can't remember specific costs, but I do know all my plumbing is around the $1,500 mark :-?

  18. pods pods pods! copepods (really small ones), amphipods (bigger ones), etc etc. if you REALLY dont want em i'll take them off ya hand unfortunately most of my pods are in my overflow too, not in the main tank. mandarin would have one hell of a time chowing down in the overflow. i might see if I can syphon the little buggers back into the main tank... if you can handle the popups... http://saltaquarium.about.com/cs/pestscopepods/a/aa061200_3.htm
  19. under pressure? nup! pressure rate plumbers glue with pvc pipe is the way to go. costly but strong!
  20. kein Nr. kann nicht ihn so traurig nirgends finden i do see something black at the bottom of my overflow... dont think its blenny meat though. probably plastic of some sort.
