  1. pies, approx high thick is your sandbed in ya main tank?
  2. Cracker, Brian. If you end up going BB, consider spray painting the underside of the tank a sand colour. Who knows it might at least give it a better appearance!
  3. we're all (mainly) adults about these things, and all friends at the end of the day. i dont hold any grudges against people (pies? ) who i sometimes have 'debates' against! in fact, i hold alot of respect for most people on this site. everyone has their special interest and likes to have an opinion.
  4. MAY die of this is perhaps more appropriate.

    Nasty Smell

sorry, had mc d's for lunch...
  6. you mean for a syphon break? so long as it's UNDER the normal running water line you're sweet. maybe 1" or so. the idea keeping it under it crucial otherwise you'll get a nasty spray/noise and salt creep. calculate the (approx) volume above the hole you drill and ensure your sump can account for that extra volume... or are you talking about the hole in your sump FOR the return pump? if this, then keep it up a little from the bottom so no detritus that settles here gets sucked into the return.
  7. don't under estimate water flow under rocks. if i were to do mine again, i would have even better 'under rock' circulation. i grabbed one of my streams last night and 'created a storm' in my tank. the amount of detritus that had settled in my rocks was phenomenal to say the least. if you dont do this, consider bare bottom! (ugly, but less accumulation of crud) 'cooking' ya rocks (no, not with hot water!!!) maybe another consideration - timely but seems to work. too much time and effort imo.
  8. i would not dose anything, it will come right in time once you fix what layton suggests above. fix the cause not the symptom
  9. great to see alot more people getting into marine
  10. true! looks very effective!

    SPS Food

zooanthellae are extremely adaptable to lower light conditions. just takes time,... apparently.

    SPS Food

Most SPS are hermatypic and fast growing. 94 to 98% of all the organic nutrients are produced by the zooxanthella; they are the main source of the polyps’ organic nutrient requirements when i dose cyclop-eeze, the polyp extension is quite crazy! they love the stuff.
  14. what the! damn it pays to get up early...

    SPS Food

cyclop-eeze, seems to work for me
  16. i saw a pic of a tank with about 10 chromis in it. a pretty plain fish by itself, but in a school, wow! was very impressive to say the least.
  17. Soon. Just hell busy as at the mo... 12hr days suck, too many clients too little time :-? Will post on my tank thread either tomorrow or Wednesday. There are improvements, none to the 2 large brown acro's, but definately some to the smaller acro frags. Still the frags are not completely coloured up but I am reserved on the zeovit thing and know it will take a while! They are definately getting there. Pics soon... just hope the camera can show the true colours. Might make a perspex box to get the top down shot (or go grab a diving mask from the garage  )

    New Addittions

make sure they don't leave the water at any stage between LFS and your tank, they are also very sensitive to sudden temperature changes so acclimatise slowly - when you get your next ones
  19. if you know anyone with a well established tank with plenty of coralline growth already, 'chip' some coralline off his rocks and sprinkle (seed) it throughout your tank, this will also help... otherwise as pies says above, low/medium light and good calcium levels.
  20. This is EXACTLY what I have stated throughout this post and in fact, it is the very article I read about 6 months ago when setting up my tank and is what I based some of my facts on... I think this sentence on that link re-emphasizes my argument: I knew reasonable flow velocity had an effect, just couldnt remember what on earth it was about fritctional loss in pipes - "From equation 1 we know that the flow velocity is inversely proportional to the square of the pipe diameter"
  21. This is a very interesting thread - heres a link to page 16 of a discussion on what type of skimmers are best (mainly about thin tall necks vs short fat necks, venturi performance etc) One thing I found interesting was Stuart's post (I think this dude works for Deltec?) 4th post down regarding the metallic washers. i notice the metallic washers on the eheim pumps in my deltec skimmer are very worn, one almost falling off. they are apparently to stop the pinwheel from hitting the endcap when the power to the skimmer pumps goes off - but it also causes lower performance because the pinwheel is held further back "increasing the space where water can pass between without contacting the pinwheel"... http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=332134&perpage=25&pagenumber=16 i might take them off next skimmer maintenance. they are so small anyway i dont think they are doing a great deal.
  22. how about i take an older $30k godzilla, spend $50k on it then we race back on topic, pies - you thought my plumbing was bad?... impressive SIZE tank but OMG... http://www.reeffrontiers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5253
  23. i wish. i was speculating, if only i had one i would!!!
  24. yes, same with fluids. not sure if its different under pressure vs gravity though? heheee, holden vs ford debate, that didnt take long. anyways you'd both be eating my godzilla dust
  25. first and foremost, what age is the tank? has it cycled yet?
