you still dont get - its not a personal attack. its an attack on the WAY you bring across your debate. you take evidence that is factual to a certain extent, but the evidence you produce is altered some what by another factor. its that other factor that takes away what you think is concrete evidence. its like saying cream is made of whipped up milk and sugar. but by adding the sugar you're making icecream (ok, a lame comparison but you get the idea)
  2. so true, my fire coral got me a couple of nights ago. wife heard me from the kitchen!!! words that cant be repeated on this site without getting the boot

and from what i have read, an increase in zoox does cause an increase in growth. however an "over populated" increase in zoox density can cause the opposite. you are not comparing apples to apples and adding other factors into the argument. to me this is stating that "diffusion-limited supply of CO2" is the cause, not increased density of zoox. are most tanks limited in supply of CO2 to cause this?

possibly because it was proven invalid in a later test? and btw, im not trying to prove you wrong and me right, just trying to get my head around how you come to half your conclusions.

so which is it, are we talking about zoox increase caused by nitrate or zoox increase caused by other factors? dont recall anything about nitrate in our discussion and most of us have no detectable levels of nitrate in our tanks. "appears to have" or "does have" ??? which is it? oh, and a link to the "new" test results would be good. no offence layton but you seem to be digging yourself a larger hole. if you can provide hard core evidence rather than quoting information from tests done almost a decade ago, then you might have better evidence to prove "your" theory. oh, and im not scientifically minded nor do I admit to be. you may have some valid points but you just need to back them up a little better rather than taking what someone wrote and advancing on it based on your own theories.

Oh, you mean the test he did in 1998 (almost 8 years ago?) oh, and considering the number of different zeolites out there, was it the same one zeovit uses as they vary in composition considerably. i've tried searching on the web for this but only result from google is a single link back to you talking about it on fnzas. Is it in a book? If so, which one. reference?

That is very interesting, it appears that by using ASW you are adding a SUBSTANTIAL higher level of trace elements than you would by using NSW. Lets take, ohh say Iron for example (in micromoles per kilogram) NSW = 0.0001, ASW (instant ocean) = 0.24. You could be dosing substantially higher levels of iron than, hmmm, lets see, say Zeovit? Then again, take Seachem's salt, a whopping 7.7 mm/kg of iron, ouch!
  9. you really should have 3 baffles on the right hand side then as well, rather than just one. water flowing over may cause microbubbles effecting performance of flow for your return pump and also effecting clarity in the main tank (nothing worse than the main tank full of bubbles!) HOWEVER! you might be able to get away with it though if you change the amount of flow that goes to the skimmer and refugium sections. i would recommend if you are going to split the overflow, imo put about 1/4 of water to the fuge and 3/4 of the water to the skimmer section. use different size pipes to achieve this. you dont want insane water movement in the refugium, only subtle. this should allow your pod population to grow better. the idea is to have adults breeding babies and only the babies to get fed to the display tank. too much flow might upset this balance (especially considering its such a small volume of water)
  10. Here's an example of the linksys wag54g, builtin dsl, wireless, vpn support etc... http://www.pricespy.co.nz/pno_5815.html linksys products... http://www1.linksys.com/international/group.asp?coid=21&grid=33&scid=35 There are cheaper brands around though and depends on whether you want DSL builtin, vpn functionality etc or just a wireless access point. http://www.pricespy.co.nz/pno_2454.html I find the Linksys to be good for the home user or small office though.
  11. im a little confused from the pic? water enters the right and is pumped back out from the left? if so, move skimmer to the middle or right. should be no equipment in the section where the return pump is.
  12. oh dear, so you've met cracker. did you have ear plugs?

maybe a couple of twin 40W fluoro's? im not the best person to ask on lighting, there are others on here who know alot more on the subject. dont worry about lighting for sump. first biggest purchase should be a skimmer (maybe a weipro from deepblue aquarium for around $140 could be a good buy to start off with?) aye carumba, its late. im hitting the sack, gotta get up in 6 hours...!

dont even bother with sps for now, just stick to some nice softies and a couple of fish. dont bother with heavy lighting like halides either - maybe look at T5's or even some cheap fluoro's instead. keep it simple to start, when you are comfortable with the tank and have learnt from it, then move on from there. keep an eye out on trademe for deals, dont buy new unless you have too. post questions here on pricing and others will let you know if its a deal or a rip off again no offence but a part time supermarket job just wont cover a full reef tank so stick with the basics first, learn from them and save yourself some cash. alternately, save up heaps, buy some foreign exchange or shares and make your money that way who knows you might just be the richest 14 year old in nzl

save up for a decent protein skimmer instead, will be alot more beneficial to your tanks overall filtration requirements

so when you said you were 100% sure of display size you were just testing? the best thing you are doing is asking first. if you jumped right in, it can get costly. just make sure you plan hard out first. read pies and my threads to get some good ideas and see where we went wrong. learn from our mistakes and you'll save yourself some dosh! btw anthony, you're just young right? no offence, but budget hard core first (which it looks like you're doing). it can be expensive.

all up i reckon eheim 1060 for return pump into 1/2" sea swirl (or just up and over for now, buy sea swirl later), 25mm overflow hole back to sump, eheim 1060 (or 1260/1262) for closed loop for low flow and a couple of seio powerheads for upper flow and you'll be set
