  1. Good your in Auckland so your best to contact "stone and water world" in Mt Wellington , they sell all the gravels in bulk sacks at about 1/3 the price the shops do.. they should also be able to give advice on the Ph changes certain gravels do ..
  2. You can as I did when living in NZ is place coral rock in the sump/s .. and keep the volcanic rock in main tank for realism
  3. am curious as to why people asking what is needed to run a NZ (temperate) tank as opposed to a tropical marine, apart from the obvious equipment, isn't it just replacing the heater units with a chiller?? am I wrong here ?
  4. sweet for a first setup, as was said before , plenty of filteration / circulation is needed ,as per your critter listing , minced seafood for all the livestock (hand fed to the anemones) , and place tank in the coldest part of your house until chiller installed, rockpools vary in temps massively from cold to over tropical temps and salinities so your collecting from the hardiest points of the ocean life forms.. you can have chiller blocks floating in the current to keep heat down until chiller unit installed... have kept numerous NZ marine tanks when in Tauranga and all from exp with sea horses, octopus , stargazers, leather jackets , kelp / marble fish, mao mao , pipefish , crabs & shrimps of all types, anemones , sea weeds , sponges , etc etc blah blah... ... so keep up the good work .... Mystic!! you playing the nazi police here!? ... lol .. yur cute as , gud on ya
  5. Please feed him live fish at that age, it will help him come out of his cave and start roaming the tank hunting , pallets aren't a good idea , they aren't a cichlid . live fish , bloodworms , fresh minced ox heart are what they need , have kept both types D.micro's & D. Quad's ... bluddy shy guy's till they settle but unless they are bigger than their tank mates (cichlids etc) they will sulk and hide away ... have pics of a couple about 35 cm's that had for along time if you want to see , fed them goldfish the size of a fist.. oh and by the way , plz put marine salt into the tank ( brackish) does wonders for fungal etc.. good luck and enjoy the cool lil dude
  6. bummer it isn't the mono poly's .. have had major experience with them in NZ , raising, breeding etc etc ... soo cool.. can't get them over here! : / gud luck with yours..
  7. hey peace all!! ... have snorkelled with killies over here, and rainbow fish, other odd looking dudes and yabbies, turtles etc at gardner falls , yet to I.D any of them , bluddy fast bugga's ... gonna bring nets next time, and hopefully post water testing & pics of my collecting.. but getin back to killies , best advice as most would say , kill the PH , java moss & sphagnum moss ,& put lids on your tanks
  8. can you tell us what gravel you have placed the tank pls ?, they can have a major effect on PH buffer levels with the mass they hold ..
  9. guess wants to keep with goldfish and frogs! where's me rifle!! .. lol
  10. Darker substrates work best with most freshwater fish, if you have dived/snorkelled in most of their habitats you'll find that is the case .. basically the darker the bottom the more the fish feel safer, hence less stress, blotchy colours, odd behaviour etc. . but as said is mostly and not all the case.. have been to a few places and also been involved with professional aquarium setups back in NZ, and find that fish in general (Asian, African, Aust, American ) are more happy ( behaviour, colour, etc )... this has to be offset by the owners preference so thats up to them in the end being the owners of these life forms ... but this can be another story with brackish species..
  11. lol. yeah tell me about it , time flies when busy hey , was checkin out an comparing reef livestock prices as am movin to brissie soon an settin up new reef over there... thanks for the info
  12. hello , been outa the lop (fish wish) for abit an now find jansens closed the marine side of things , not such a bad thing as hollywoods are better there but what happened??
