    Clam pics

nice, although the title sounds dirty
  7. its a defence mechanism. any more questions
  8. cool, how big are the koura and bandeds?, my bandeds decided that inanga are yummy and then devistated the population. also would love some pics of the redfins, as the colourationseems to vary quite a bit between different populations.
  9. yes but a great reason to learn how to raise snails successfully. really we like to keep random fish specimens from around the world in little glass boxes, how wired is that comparitively.
  10. any suggestions for hardscape? the plants in the right corner are rooted down hard but it is a play tank so i'm intereseted what other people would do, I have never done a "pretty tank" before, always been about breeding of keeping a specimen happy.
  11. I saw a whole heap kept by keeping them outside in a poly box with a couple of small holes punched in it, the bottom was leaf litter and every week or so he chucked in a pile of greenery. the dude was using them for snail racing as a drinking contest, but im assuming the idea works as his "thoroughbred" lasted for several months of winning
  12. looked again this morning and the larger one (still only just breaking the 1" mark) is in berry, by far the smallest berried female I've ever seen. oh and btw the total setup cost so far = $20 for the tank and filter (great score from the markets), $2 for the gravel, $8 for the original parents of the leopards, and so far $8 for flake food. oh and also the reason I don't scrub the sides (other than to save $$$ on back grounds ) is im gonna get some Latia (Native Glow in the dark Limpets) at some point soon and want a good supply of food.
  13. dunno about the eco-style but some of the new Aquaone LED range have a moon light button that adds blue to the lights. retrofitting pink lights to one of those tanks would be a pain tbh. a good tip with the drift wood is to look for Dark coloured wood as it isn't pine, and also to give it a good scrub down to remove any soft rotting wood (i normally throw away any wood thats soft anyways.) might also want to point out that it is illegal to remove rocks or sand from a beach or river without a permit :sage:
  14. thought I'd share some photo's i decided to snap today, this is my 20L 'play' tank, it was originally set up to house a dwarf puffer or 2, but my puffer died in a tragic accident involving a bottle of liquid soap :ske: . so I decided to raise a couple (now 3) of Juvenile Redfin bullies in there instead, plus my favorite 2 leopard fish breeders (1x Male, 1 x female), (both showing some nice yellow) and a couple of shrimp. please excuse the brown algae problem, i forgot to turn the light off a while ago, plus i missed a water change over exam week, it is slowly coming right again. my female leopard, note the plant on left, that is the un-id'd one i had the other day. and my shrimpies
  15. awesome, new project time!!!! :spop:
  16. oh well, worth a shot. hope the plecos enjoyed him while they could
  17. Stigmatopora longirostris ???
  18. it is possible that he has some major nerve trauma, that is why his tail is not working properly (or its just too damn sore to move), good luck on the recovery but don't get your hopes up
  19. I think we have finally found a case were a life jacket Would be useful.
  20. and 2 seconds after this post i found it :an!gry http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=59249&hilit=mould
  21. ok been searching for a while now, I remember a while ago someone posted that they had an issue with an Aqua one tank with mould growing under the silicon, I'm trying to find the thread for someone with a very similar problem on a tank within its warranty period. anyone else remember it or was i dreaming it?
  22. unfortunately going salt is going to be more expensive due to the nature of the ocean. have you thought about a NZ Native tank, you could still get the kids out collecting and they are really cool fish once they settle in, expecially the bullies.
  23. I've used lots of aquaones before with no issues except for a rolled o-ring once and a couple of cracked outlet pipes due to rough handling. plus they are easy to get parts for until they bring out a newer model =P
  24. well the tank was intended originally for puffers, and now houses 3 juvenile redfin bullies so the population has never risen much above 2 that I can see. although i did see a couple get munched once.
  25. :sml1: you have ruined his grand plan!!!! have you looked into battery operated heater units? they are common overseas, dunno about NZ though. http://www.ebay.com/bhp/usb-rechargeable-hand-warmer
