  1. all good still, male still guarding well and fanning a bit. fingers crossed. oh and btw the trigger for spawning I believe is dumping the results of a river monitoring survey into the tank the day before. (about 100+ mayfly, caddis and stonefly larvae)
  2. yeah was lucky, i wasn't even supposed to go in there then, just happened to pop in for a check and water change ( and a few extra worms) and had an awesome surprise. might go check on the progress soon, unfortunately being in the middle of a house move I only have one tank full of leopard fish available to put them in, i might siphon out a few wrigglers (if I see them) and see what happens. have lots of good green water in the cattletrough next to my temporary fishroom, so see what happens. i'll leave the rest to have a go in the big tank. i'm gonna go check them out in a minute (if the class room is empty) and will give you an update.
  3. I have a grainy video taken with cell phone. http://img191.imageshack.us/img191/6955/ac2nrkqmgsiyrwgblguusc.mp4
  4. go for a night mission with a trailer to where the local community service crew were working today, get heaps for free plus giving the idiots something to do tomorrow
  5. Western Springs Lake suffers from algae blooms from all the bread and bird poop in the water. They leave them just like the Koi to keep the water clean.
  6. how did the oto's go, it's not often that you hear the words otocinclus and fist fish in the same sentence without problems
  7. for price it is hard to beat Aquaone, plus they are easy to get replacement parts. avoid Sunsun as their power consumption is rediculous. if you have the money eheim or Fluval would be the go, more expensive early on but last for eons. also remember for Africans the aim is to filter for 2-3 times the tank volume, that way you can handle a lot higher stocking making for a better display. or a 450L tank I would go at absolute least 2 x 1200 preferably 4 x CF1200 filters, benefit is that you can add the extra filters later as you stock up or find cheapies on trademe.

  9. have you added anything recently?
  10. sounds like a nasty trip, must have had horrible water to affect him that bad though, I would keep him in a well airated tank with pristine water, that should be enough to bring him round. keep a very close eye on his ammonia levels and keep nitrate to a minimum.
  11. I am currently enthralled by watching my Redfin Bullies lay a nest of eggs.
  12. fishing rod, take your binoculars, heaps of native birds about, go spotlighting for native fish, go spot lighting for native drunks (both inhabit the lowland creeks) RELAX, heaps of nice walks nearby, stop by your local DOC office and meet the ranger, they are actually really nice up there, they will point you out some good spots to go that are off the beaten track.
  13. does this mean that the Auckland City Council is illegally keeping a noxious species???? why not just tell the local fish and chip shop, turn a blind eye, and they will disappear overnight
  14. just make sure there isn't any rotting food around. live brine shrimp naupili are especially apreciated (as is all live food)

    earth worms

you can squeeze the dirt out or chop them up and rinse out the dirt without a problem.
  16. well done, good luck with the raising but it seems the hard bit is already done.
  17. you may be surprised what a gold fish will eat, they are nasty lil guys, the 60L tub thing is the best approach imo, all you need is an air pump and away you go.

never asked never told ime yes they are one time use only. you should be able to purchase more at an outdoors shop where they are sold as pocket warmers.
