  1. theres also trout in that river (shhhhh... don't tell anyone.) afre you talking about triops????? if you are, then I know what im doing this weekend......
  2. woohooo go sarah.... also called lara.... hrmmm..... good on you.
  3. hey we had a takeaway found wit cats in the freezer in TGA, they claimed personal use.....
  4. you would know, what are the beekeepers hauling around in blue plastic drums here then????? they seem to throw them away all the time. (probably veroa mite spray in which case they will be bad to use.)
  5. The SPCA sometimes does free de-sexing runs, especially around christmas time. big thank oyu to the lady who left them the money to start this.
  6. damn water weasels. went back for another look tonight, i'm sure its a gambusia just really light coloured. hopefully it will just provide live food for the kokopu. Still havent caught it so it may be a released guppy (fingers crossed) I know some of the people around there have released goldfish in there before, im assuming their tropical attempt went the same way
  7. I use it without a problem, there is also a rounded form that comes from gisborne im trying to source atm. plants love it, but you need to seriously rinse it and also use your gravel syphon when filling. maybe use a floculant if worst comes to worst as that stuff is DIRTY.
  8. those ones are good, just drop a couple of tablespoons of baking soda in to test it on the final rinse. any fizz and rinse again (or if you want to waste our test kit on it, use that.) try ringing your local apiarists, they just use them for honey. also just buy a few $10 fish bins from bunnings, 50L each.
  9. go into a proper store and they will even cut it and mitre it for you, all you have to do is screw it together. its kinda like flatpack for men
  10. go to townsville then walk through any long grass. they are lot softer than most people expect
  11. you could do a nice dwarf/semidwarf cichlid tank in that, but it is rather small for most other cichlids
  12. don't forget the big one that outsmarted us
  13. wrap the whole stand in corrugated iron doesn't matter about looks then.
  14. well the water was almost black water very acidic i would assume, temp was 15.5 degrees. I have a mission and I must complete it....
  15. hrm an interesting example. I was meaning fossil records though... oh well, btw took out blue ether to my Tga spot today, where I've always seen nice adult fish only found heaps of juvies, the one adult we saw out smarted us anyway off topic....
  16. just a quick question but is there any record of NZ native fish before the Taupo eruption??? it seems that if it was as bad as I imagine, only fish with a saltwater larval stage would have survived.
  17. what is the tanks specs??? footprint, filtration, lighting, also your tap water params could be useful. and also when you say "cycling for 5 weeks" what method are you using???
  18. like to add that the old fish farm in TGA has now been bulldozed and the hot water bore shut down, last look I had there was nothing in there (for that matter nothing native either) saw a strange white looking fish tonight with blueether in Tga, i'm gonna go back and find it, looked kinda like an really white gambusia. also saw a platie once in the wairoa river, also saw the knob emptying his tank into the river (must also point out I didn't see his fist coming when my mouth got the better of me)
  19. non copper method..... step 1:- empty tank step 2:- hose out tank with high pressure hose step 3:- buy brand new gravel that has been steralised step 4:- start your tank from scratch step 5:- in about 2 months try and work out where the snails came from. personally if you have a few loaches keeping them under control, they are actually quite useful as they keep the gravel clean down to the bottom. plus free food for the loaches.

im not an expert but have noticed my ambulia was lanky like that for a bit, then I dosed with flourish iron and it went bushy (and mental about 2cm per day growth) also made my rotala a redder colour.
  21. the one I saw had blocks stacked about 70cm apart, with a 25mm ply top and iron around it
  22. it seems strange to say this but.... :smot: find another thread to continue this discussion, its very rude to turn this "hello im here" thread into a border security thread. I notice we haven't heard a lot from this new member since this begun
