    damn hydra

ime coppe rcan be annoying, the chemical that kills them is fenbendizole, a cattle wormer, you might see my other post asking for it. the fish that munches it is your regular gourami,
  4. I keep my shrimp happily at around 25-26 degrees, after about 27 you have trouble. but yeah they probably be a good snack for the gourami, lucky they are free... (I hope you didn't buy them off trademe)
  5. is this for fresh or salt water???
  6. is it worth removing this from the care sheet, or worth keeping to allow decent airflow
  7. thought so, was an article regarding reptile enclosures
  8. correct me if im wrong, but doesn't mesh size affect light input into the tank???, have heard that you need at least 1cm mesh if you want UV light to get into the tank (may have misread the info) due to the wavelength
  9. should I reply and have a little fun???? p.s. didn't wanna post the whole email as it was quite long, anyone wanna see???
  10. has anyone tried using a flexible mat underneath the tank to prevent earthquake damage???

    Betta Cancer?

other possibility is the air bladder may have an infection, causing an abcess, causing the lump... do they have a warm layer of air to breathe????

    Betta Cancer?

sounds like a tumour to me, or maybe an abcess pics??? if tumour, here is a possibility it is benign and will just make her ugly, but may press on vital organs / spine

    damn hydra

have just noticed a few hydra beginning to grow in my breeding tank  I know there is a surefire method to kill these off without doing anything to drastic but I can't for the life of me remember what it is...
  14. worst one I saw was a job advertised on seek.co.nz , after applying and you get the job description you find out that you get a check, which you cash into your name, then you transfer the money to someone else after you take a cut out of it. reported that one to the fraud people, sounds like a money laundering scheme to me... dunno what happened there
  15. dunno, something about the liquid I suppose. remember when they were spraying for painted apple moth and people got annoyed when they wouldn't divulge what the spray base was as it was what made the bacterial spray work. many organic insecticides use Baccillus thuringus (excuse my spelling) to kill the insects and have a dormant bacteria, exposure to the insect it self is the trigger to wake it up. im thinking exposure to the tank environment or the ammonia/nitrite itself is the trigger in this case.
  16. seriously though, if you fall for that one you almost deserve to be stung
  17. +1, patience is more than a virtue with tanks. I've always used the live fish method, and not had any trouble, have heard some interesting stories about the prawn technique (p.s. if its about being humane, then 1 dead prawn compared to 1-5 Live fish ) I also use a live bacteria solution nowdays, dunno if its absolutely necessary but it gives you a bit of extra lee way. p.s. they keep the bacteria live by putting it into a dormant phase, similar to anthrax in white powder form
  18. Very nice, good work on the stand
  19. and sometimes its not.... I don't mind the odd sam coming through, its to be expected, but when its as bad as his it should get put into the joke email category... just an excerpt, and the best spelled part of it
  20. hrmmm.... maybe my boys are just dumb then, they do have a habit of walking round with half the shelter belt stuck to their heads too
  21. these??? if those are the 4mm airline type tube fittings, then try any hobby shop, but you can get a similar thing (not quite as airtight, but a bit of silicone fixes this) from the irrigation fittings section of your hardware or gardening store
  22. i'd probably go for the 2 1200's over the 2700, even though they are rated comparitively, the 2x 1200's would be pushing more water over more media, plus you have a lot more flexibility with layout, flow rates/direction and cleaning would be a lot safer with one untouched system after a filter clean. plus you could play around and try things like completely filling one with noodles and one with floss to see what would happen and if you could improve on a good idea
