  1. In my opinion, which isn't backed by a lot of experience, it's a case by case basis. How deep is your substrate?
  2. I don't think she'll be sniffing the foam in the pot, or letting it dry out :gigl:
  3. I actually have no way of getting another filter into the existing tank. The tank is braced on all four sides, a good 60mm or so across. There is one very small hole in each corner at the back of the tank, but nothing at the front or sides that could let anything else in. I could try raising the filter so that it is closer to the top of the tank, and then dumping the tube ends into the front of the tank, cane-like tubes and all, but I would rather not, as the risk of them flying out would be quite high.
  4. If you have the smaller one pumping water into the larger one, I don't see an issue until the water flow speed picks up enough to be running faster than the smaller one can handle. In which case, I could turn it off, which shouldn't alter the force required for the second one to pump the water.
  5. That sounds simple, but with my current tank, it's not. I had to sand the glass for hours to get the CF1200 tubes to fit, there is no room for a larger filter intake/outtake, let alone additional intake/outtakes. Which is why I asked if running one filter into the other would work. I'm guessing noone has tried this?
  6. :digH: You missed the 6 or 7 offtopic comments that lead to half the thread being removed :smot:
  7. I'ld rather have them both running and ready for when the next tank is ready. I don't want the CF1200 to dry out. The CF1200 was cleaned out only week before last, so the bacteria is still rebuilding in the CF1200, especially on the sponges. I was planning on this also. 50% to each tank, and rest filled with new dechlorinated water. Wasn't sure about the water carrying the bacteria, they like to cling to surfaces, or so I've heard. If I disconnected the CF1200 and replaced it with the CF1000, there should be enough bacteria in the tank (glass, substrate, etc) to maintain the water parameters, but I don't want the CF1200 to dry out, and I wanted to prevent having a new filter on an old tank and a cycled filter on a new tank - it's two possible ammonia spikes instead of one.
  8. Those dates are '74. If she was 10 then... then she'ld be in her 50s now....
  9. Hi All, I have a new 300L tank and a new CF1000 filter. I have an existing 247L tank and an existing CF1200 filter. Existing setup is stocked and parameters are perfect. Can I hook up the CF1000 to the CF1200 to start building up bacteria in the CF1000? (Water comes out of Tank -> into CF1000. Out of CF1000 -> into CF1200. Out of CF1200 -> back into Tank) I have plenty of time to let this happen while I wait for substrate and for the driftwood to sink. Let me know you thoughts, or if anyone has tried this before.
  10. I found that with my plants, the one plant that was left in the mineral wool has really taken off, the rest get dug up too often by my Bristlenose
  11. Water colour has not changed overnight, but there is now some sand on the bottom of the tank. Finding the wood was the issue. I talked to the LFS (who warned me of the costs of wood this size), looked on TradeMe, in a couple of rivers, a couple of beaches. Finally found something that would do the job, rather than exactly what I was looking for. Manuka may be best, but "it's not like it grows on trees" -oh wait, it does :digH:
  12. I have seen a 3m x 3m x 3m triangle tank, 2.4m high. It was built into a living room. He got the engineers from Kelly Tarlton's to design the glass. I would suggest the same.
  13. You should be able to find them online easy enough?
  14. Cheers guys, I was going to rinse out any water that may have picked up some salt? Afterall, it has to go somewhere. I don't know if it would or not, but I thought it doesn't hurt to ask.
  15. Well I've been doing a few searches, and while most people say that scaleless fish do not like salt, a lot of others have said they have used it without it affecting their bristlenose. Hard to tell, but if my bristlenose are going to be sucking on the wood, I'ld like to get as much salt out as possible.
  16. Hey all, I found a nice large chunk of driftwood on the beach. I've given it a blast with the hose, and now I'm gonna let it soak to try and get some of the salt out of the wood. Couple of questions: How long would you recommend soaking it for? Can I leave it to soak in the new tank? (soak it, when it's done, take it out, rinse it down, and start the tank setup process.) Can I attach the new filter to the tank to get some water flow happening, (which I'm sure should help speed up the process) or would this damage the new filter / cause issues later with salt? Please note before replying: I want to get as much salt out as possible, as my bristlenose are VERY SENSITIVE TO SALT. Most people would say this rules out driftwood from the beach, but I'm stubborn :slfg:
  17. It'll be under a parent's name. They want someone to blame if things go wrong
  18. Nope. I knew if I was to get a photo, I would need a reference item to show how big it was. Then they MIGHT (unlikely, but Still...) track me down and pay me a "visit"... It's easier to give them an anonymous tip like "hey go check out the Kaituna River". If they weren't so sensitive about the "IT IS ILLEGAL TO POSSES OR COLLECT IT." then I would be more inclined to get them photographic proof. Otherwise, it's not worth getting my feet wet :sml2: /end crazy paranoia :sml2:
  19. Animal Antics has only a small selection of their stock on display atm, they have plenty more at their old building still. Asking the dark haired staff works a treat :slfg:
  20. If for some reason toxicity becomes an issue, create a smaller tank to sit inside your larger tank. It would reduce your cooling a little, but you could colour the inside of the smaller tank to hide the chiller. These are thoughts based on not seeing the images, as I'm browsing via my smartphone
  21. I happen to know a local keeper quite well, who MAY be looking at getting rid of their 4, 2 brown & 2 green, all males. If not, I know their local breeder/supplier  I will talk to them and let you know
