  1. you are not the only one that thought it was the name for some fancy product. I am just glad that it wasnt me that asked what it was.
  2. I change it to Auckland if i ever need area specific help, and it is in gps because writing it is binary was to long to be accepted. :smot: Landscaping sand is good, it just needs thorough rinsing/washing as it is often quite dirty
  3. Nice tank/fish. Your plecos are looking great.
  4. Welcome to the group. adding your location in your profile can help out, but other then that maybe don't use abbreviations, as I think you mean auckland with AK, but am not sure where HB is, or maybe I am just not smart enough to work it out. Other then that you have posted correctly, but maybe should have had a more descriptive title.
  5. Welcome to fnzas, your tank is looking really good, and best of luck getting rid of the BBA, I found that a couple of large dosages of excel cleared it up when I had it quick enough.

    Pumps...

I am fairly sure that the wattage is the same whether it is pumping its maximum flow rate or no water, as the impeller(or what ever it is called) is spinning at essentially the same rate no matter what the flow. in terms of pumps I have a 5 year old aqua viva that is still going great in my pond with only a little drop in the flow rate, but I prefer the aqua one pump I haves the flow rate doesn't seem to have dropped by quite as much, but then I havn't had it as long.
  7. Well every few weeks/months in summer I come to the pond to see the turtles fighting over a bird carcas, often mostly torn up by the time I see it, so I can only assume they caught it. I also see bird diving in the water under my waterfall, which is where my turtles like to lurk at time, so I assume they catch them there.
  8. Forgot to mention, your fish will definitely enjoy a larger tank for more room to move around and make them less crowded.
  9. Putting it together could be fun, just with a large tank it might be hard to get it to look good, but I wish you luck if you decide to do that. Thats a nice selection of fish there, maybe you misheard that rule a bit, I have heard 1cm of fish per litre before, but there are so many other factors that count. Personally I think the main part is to have enough filtration, the tank is large enough for the maximum sizes and to do enough water changes that the water doesn't get to 'unhealthy'. Getting it up a spiral stair case could be a fun challenge, as with 10cm glass my tank was almost to heavy for dad and I to carry it, and we didn't have any tricky maneuvering it around a stair case
  10. Nice tank, the blue background looks good, cant wait to see it when you can see then fish.
  11. I personally would get a tank made, and set it up your self, it is far more fun to do it that way. When I bought a new glass tank last september it cost me $230 for 1.2long*.45wide*.55high (just under 300l), in 10mm glass, and I doubt the price for tanks has changed much since then. I dont know much about floor strength, but 300l tank should be fine, as long as you dont go for a really high option. I personally wouldnt buy a second hand tank, the saving in money isnt worth having 200+L of water and fish spilling all over my floor. You should be able to get a tank of similar size set up for less then $800, but I personally think you should set one up yourself as it is fun, and good experience for when you set up more bigger tanks (or maybe it is just me that has mts....). But I wish you luck on your endeavors. :smot: but what are the fish that you have in your tank?
  12. Those fish look very nice, and great photos.
  13. I have never found snails to be a problem, as long as you dont over feed they will just clean up the little amount of leftovers, and not get to large enough numbers to become an eye sore.

    Fluval FX5

Look for a blockage in the hose, I just cleaned the hose of my canisters today, and it doubled the flow rate of them.
  15. My broke ness means I have to exercise my creativity for presents, so I dont buy anything at the shops last minute. And it is the thought that counts with presents isn't it?
  16. Congradulations on your son growing up. Get him to play Under water hokey next year, he will enjoy it (and they need more new players). Spent today re arranging my room so I can fit another fish tank in there, MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!!!!! (On a side note cupboards, the bed and desks are quite hard to move around by yourself).
  17. Just leave any young in the tank with the rest of the fish, they will probably get eaten, but if you weren't wanting to keep the young in the first place it wont matter that much. I am going to say the guy probably didnt know what he was talking about, as Jack Dempseys can be aggressive.
  18. I second the idea for you going on a picnic, and the weather is nice, and doesn't look at all like it will change to rain.
  19. They are to celebrate student achievement in your school, you go to support your fellow student who have achieved something.
  20. I had exactly the same problem, but it was about 9:30 that it stopped working, and started working just as i was about to get the phone to call them (about 9 in the morning).
  21. Your internet not working this morning to?
  22. Well I am horribly under paid then, and I thought I was doing good on $15 n hour. I know it can be hard to find a job now, but the easiest way to find a job is to just hand your cv into every workplace around you that you can. trust me in that, last summer when I was looking for my first job I handed out about 50 CV's to places before I managed to get a job.
  23. I agree with barnacle there, the heating is definitely the biggest cost, and you have identified a large problem in that your house isnt insulated. One way to reduce this power usage could be to insulate the tanks themselves. I also find the lights use quite a bit of power, and that is very easily sorted by reducing the time that they are on. And dont under estimate how much power a heat pump can use, it maybe energy efficient, but if you have it on allot it will use alot of power.
