  1. For the ceiling of my old fish shed I used fibreglass insulation between the rafters then lined with ply and glued poly to the ply. Possibly overkill, but why not?
  2. I think when most things die they are hard to repair

It doesn't seem that long ago that a 29 inch tv was considered a big screen tv
  4. i think the price is the least of the concerns on that setup
  5. It is a good idea to disconnect the battery before you start.

Lambing has started. As cool as it is I'm not so keen on getting up at 5:10 am to check the sheep (as well as straight after work and after dinner).
  8. That's $12 wholesale. Multiply that by at least 2 for retail. They've got to pay rent, staff and other overheads.
  9. could you use inflatable paddling pools?

I used to cop a fair bit of grief at school too Joe. Try not to let it get you down. It's not an indication on who you are, but an indication of how empty their lives and minds are that they have to resort to putting you down to feel better about themselves. I know that's not much in the way of consolation, but hang tough mate, you'll get through it and you'll be a better person than they could ever hope to be.
  11. you certainly have no legal responsibility to refund his money (private sale, buyer beware). i think moraly you're pretty safe too. the fish thrived in your tank and there was no reason for you to think it would do otherwise when sold. as you said, you have no control once it leaves your house. the reality is sometimes fish die. it could be that he didn't acclimatise it correctly, he may have had poor water quality, it may just have been bad luck. whatever the reason, unless he can put forward a compelling argument that it was your fault, it's on him. shame though, it was a nice fish.

sheeps wool insulation is a perfect example. it is quite a bit more expensive and doesn't perform quite as well as the standard alternative (fibreglass insulation such as pink batts). i'm not sure if they've improved it but i know it used to have issues with settling as well, which reduces it's efficiency by quite a lot. as well as that, if it became commonly used, wool prices would probably increase (supply and demand). personally i'm all for making things as eco-friendly as possible, but the reality is the bulk of people building houses are stretching their budget as it is and adding a few thousand dollars to the price at every decision adds up very quickly. on the bright side there is definitely a lot more effort being put into developing more environmentally friendly products, which will result in more effective and affordable materials.

it's a lot more complicated than that. the cost difference can be quite a lot and some of the ecofriendly methods don't perform as well as the older methods. there is a lot of progress being made in the area though, resulting in more effective and affordable options. it's very easy to say everyone should do it, but when you're the one that has to stump up the extra cash and make compromises on your home things are a bit different
  14. 540L tank would be much more suited to africans than a 200L. just saying

just a thought (might be wrong) but might look better if the rocks were built up more in the right corner (along the back and tapering down to the front)

  20. will definitely keep a couple of the brown haps, but have 6 in there at the moment. got a bit carried away with stocking, so will have to be a it ruthless and just keep the ones i really want (which will still be about 40 fish).
  21. mikes got some awesome fish, i'm stoked with the stuartgrantis i got from him. i'm pretty happy with my tank at the moment, though i'd love to upgrade to a 6x2x2. not really feasible at the moment though so will have to lose some dems, yellows and a few brown haps. hopefully it doesn't lead to increased aggression
  22. thought i'd do an update. brown haps have coloured up nicely and the peacocks have improved a bit. the tank is probably a bit overstocked, so will thin the numbers a bit this weekend.
