  1. don't you work at a vet clinic? i've got a mate who works at a vets and she gets really good discounts off aqua one products. i run a couple of aqua one cf1200s and while i've only had them a couple of months they seem very robust and good value.

just bought my tickets to see roger waters. can't wait.
  5. the travelling willbury's has found it's way back into my cd player. tweeter and the monkey man, love it
  6. i'm lucky, my girlfriend is an amazing cook and bakes awesome cakes. i get freshly made danishes, biscuits and cakes on a regular basis. i do cook as well, but probably only 1/3 of the time. that said i do get landed with the dishes, but it's a small price to pay in my opinion.
  7. i have a 60cm deep 4ft tank with africans in it. i bought 2 90cm t5 double light units. the algae went nuts. i have now cut down to 1 double light unit (1 white bulb, 1 blue bulb). this provides enough light and the blue bulb makes my dems look awesome. the units i got were sunsun units off trademe.
  8. while i can see where your coming from, he is a domesticated animal. it is not exactly natural for a dog to live with humans and have it's meals provided in a stainless steel bowl. whilst it may seem harsh to punish a dog for digging in the garden (i would also add that i would never do anything that would actually cause him pain) it is not nearly as harsh as life in the wild. there are a lot of behaviours that are natural for dogs that have to be discouraged (ie. violently defending teritory).
  9. it sounds like your dog is very similar to mine livebearer (though bruce only weighs 40kg). the problem is he only does it when nobody is home (if anyone is home he curls up outside the back door and waits for pats). i've sprinkled some crystals around the edge of the garden and i'm hoping that works. i do have access to a shock collar, but will save that for a last resort. that said ryan, i could bring it to a fish club meeting, could be entertaining

whilst i'm tempted to make the obligatory chauvanist comment, it would detract from how impressed i am that you can just whip up up a shirti i once made a pillowcase. it was ugly, didn't fit a pillow and fell apart.
  11. i don't give him bones as he has a digestive issue (megasophagus) and he tends to chew them up and swallow them, which leads to vomitting. i have just talked to a friend of a friend who has had experience with training dogs. she thinks it might be because the gardens are newly established and have been recently fertilised. apparantly he can smell the fertiliser and is digging to find the source of the smell. she told me there are some crystals available that smell bad to cats and dogs, which might put him off. i'm hoping it does, because it's my chances of getting away with another aquarium will be compromised if he keeps digging. the struggles of an animal lover in a relationship with a clean freak
  12. my dog (a huntaway x retriever) keeps getting up onto the gardens and digging holes. he's only recently started doing it (3 1/2 yers old). he's excercised regularly and has a fairly big yard to roam in. we've put up plastic netting to stop him but he just barges through. my girlfriend is getting rather angry (understatement) at him. is there some way of breaking him of this habbit?
  13. don't feed your dog underwear either :sml1:
  14. they look awesome. do i get to see these bad boys in person on saturday?
  15. a friend of mine at work got conned by this scam. they said that he had a virus that would destroy his computer and they could fix it over the internet. they got about $200 out of him (charged his credit card). he didn't realise it was a scam until it was too late to reverse the charges.

  17. you also need to take into account the volume of the filters. larger volume means more capacity for filter media. personally i'd go for the 2 smaller filters as they would probably have a larger combined volume. you could also clean out the filters at different times meaning there is less chance of a system crash
  18. could be a good thing. face your fears and all that.
  19. you'd be better off using plumbers lagging (for hot water pipes). pink batts comes in large bales (unless you got some offcuts from a building site or something) it also deteriorates quite quicly if left exposed. alternatively you could get some closed cell foam from para rubber (or similar) and tape it around the pipes. something to remember with insulating materials like pink batts is that they are no longer effective when compressed. unless you are framing it in and lining pinkbatts is not a great option. polystyrene is much better for taping to the side of the tank, or insulating when you are not lining (unlined building sites are full of fibreglass dust until the gib goes up).

    g'day

hi all, i've had fish tanks on and off for about 15 years now (more off than on though). I currently have a 4ft (300L) tank with african cichlids (dems, electric yellows, peacocks and julidochromis dickfeldi). I'm currently only allowed the one tank (rules from she who must be obeyed), but i'm working on it.
