  1. i use coral sand in my tank (dems, electric yellows, peacocks and julies). it buffers the water and i never add anything. it does show the fish waste, but if you set up your filter for good water flow this can be easily sorted. it can be quite expensive though (i got 50kg for $80, but haven't seen it that cheap since then). i've been told that crushed marble works well to but imo it doesn't look quite as good. otherwise you could use silica sand etc. and put peices of coral in the tank to buffer the water (or crushed shell/coral in the filter).
  2. it's hard enough getting up in the mornings whilst daylight savings is fresh upon us. this morning was especially hard as i awoke to find one of the windows on my truck smashed and various tools and personal items stolen. things could certainly have been worse though. at any one time i carry about $10k worth of tools in my truck, luckily i had recently removed quite a few and the low-lives in question obviously had no idea of what was worth anything. all they took by way of tools was my nail gun (luckily i have a spare). that said i will have to get the window fixed, work out and catalogue what has been stolen and contact my insurance company (tools aren't covered as my excess is more than the guns value). this means missing a days work, a concept very foreign to the thieving little punks responsible. :an!gry :an!gry :an!gry :an!gry :an!gry :an!gry :an!gry :an!gry :an!gry :an!gry that said it is a nice sunny day and i have the day off now, so once if got everything sorted i think i'll take the dog for a walk and get some work done on the fish shed. gotta grab hold of those silver linings eh.
  3. i'll put some photos up when i've got the shed sorted. it is currently in a hell of a state with timber and insulation strewn everywhere. hopefully it will be fully lined with shelves up by the end of the weekend
  4. hope you put water back in first :slfg: awesome looking tank
  5. awesome pics. you weren't tempted to take a photo of the worlds biggest agassizi?
  6. and that mate is very appreciative of your babysitting services. wiring is all in (including trench running from shed to house). have installed insulation. just stopping for a late breakfast then i'll start the lining.
  7. you say that, but i reckon you'd still use 2nd hand tanks and spend more on the fish
  8. the all blacks run just got a bit easier. aussie and south africa will probably play in the quaters, meaning we only have to face one of them. i'm hoping for an all blacks vs ireland final
  9. what are the tank dimensions?
  10. so many anti rugby posts. what a shame. we are about to hold a worldclass event (our national sport no less). you may not be into rugby, but surely you can appreciate that it has resulted in improvements to our major cities (sadly not christchurch, but you'll be back and better than ever), a boost in tourism and global awareness of how amazing nz is. ultimately we will gain from the event. as for claims rugby is a sport we aren't that good at, we are ranked 1st in the world, that means we are good at it. if you're into it, get loud and have a blast, if not do something else. no need to bag it.
  11. growing up we always had border collies as pets/farm dogs. they definitely need a lot of excersise or they will dig up your lawn, detroy anything they can get hold of and sometimes become a bit 'nippy'. if you don't think you can give them enough excersise (a decent run daily) you might want to consider getting a collie crossed with labrador or retriever.
  12. http://www.grabone.co.nz/auckland?utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=auckland&utm_source=nzh half price shark dive at kelly tarltons anyone?
  13. haha, no, sadly no slave. my girlfriend's at work, though befrore she left she did tell me i'd have to sleep in the spare room tonight because she doesn't want to catch it.
  14. the manflu has got me, i fear this may be the end

just picked up my julidochromis regani (breeding pair plus another male). the femles a big girl, hopefully she doesn't knock the males around too much.
  16. i'd be keen to grab some off you mate, but i've only got an african tank set up at the moment (pH7.5). should have a few more tanks up and running in about 3 weeks.
  17. i'm new to keeping africans, so may be wrong, but pretty sure it would be a bad idea. be careful buying off trademe (and even some petshops). some people either don't know or will lie to get a sale.
  18. sounds like a bad idea to me. african cichlids tend to be aggressive and require high ph water. some of the fish in your tank might be alright, but i suspect a lot of them would be killed.
  19. just turn down the lighting, tip a bit of wine in the tank and put on some barry white.

lazy buggers. so far today i've built a dog kennel, been to an open home, vaccuumed the house and picked up some fish tanks (1 x 4ft, 2 x 3ft, 1 x 2ft and 1 x 1ft. all for $80). now to start framing out the garden shed.
  21. if only you were as youthful and trendy as me 8)
  22. you might be able to do it through facebook etc.
  23. there's quite a few posts about this (though i still don't know how to do it myself). you can use the search function to find them
  24. they're all much the same in terms of keeping them, and different people have different opinions on which look better. my opinion on which is the best looking apisto seems to change almost daily (though apisto eunotus is always near the top, and also seems to be completely unavailable).
