  1. Have you got any clearer side on pics? I'm trying to see the tail and dorsal / anal fins to properly sex her/him.
  2. 9 weeks is still young. I certainly don't miss the sleep deprivation. Gripe water is magic juice! I think the only thing I can say is do whatever works. Every book on the market contradicts every other book on 'the right way' of parenting and it's not usually until the 2nd baby that you realise that it doesn't matter what worked for one person and their one baby so they wrote a book about it. It sounds like colic to me too and if you can get them off to sleep by them sitting upright on you then let that happen. You might be in for a month or 2 of that or it could take a year. again - 9 weeks is not really old. Hope plunket help you out with some ideas. Good luck
  3. Oh crap! He was awesome the one time I met him. Blind and pretty much deaf and hobbling along but awesome all the same. Really sorry to hear.
  4. Ooooo nasty! Thankfully I've always mucked around with my co2, either DIY or pressurised, so now my fish just expect some sort of craziness Actually I wonder what my swing is now that I'm turning it on for the lights only - must test that.
  5. Looks great! Very professional, well done.
  6. It's perfectly fine to add hot water to bring it up to a near enough temperature. Just make sure it's not warmer than the tank that you're adding it to. The human hand is pretty good at telling temperatures so put your hand in the tank then in the bucket to see if it's warmer or colder. It doesn't need to be a perfect match so don't stress. In the current situation you'd be better off doing a water change from a cold hose than none at all but the best water change will be one that has a mixture of cold and hot water to match the tank temperature. Again, hot water mixed with cold water to match the temperature is fine.
  7. So I'm guessing co2 overdose but how much did the PH swing? 1 point? 2 points?
  8. crikey! how much were you adding? You do know it's not like diy where you just set it to ON eh? :sml2:
  9. Awesome setup! Yeah, I especially like the lack of ... oops, out of my depth here... the pink choral type growth that covers everything in a saltwater tank. Anyway, awesomely simple and magnificent to view.
  10. you've changed... :sml1:
  11. I've had absolutely no problems doing 50% water changes with the garden hose. As long as you trickle fill the tank the water temp doesn't drop any more than 3 degrees and it's mostly the temp that affects the bacteria. By the time the water has splashed into the tank there's pretty much no chlorine left anyway but I always add a bit of prime to the tank to be sure.
  12. Wow, you people in Christchurch just don't get a break huh? If there's anything I can do from AKL let me know.
  13. Could you offer a guided tour to all us non-experts on natives in the Auckland clubs / fnzas?
  14. as above or just take the impeller out and clean in and around the housing and the impeller itself.
  15. That's a really good article. I wonder if this explains the orange in my apistos vs. the reds in others? Maybe I need to add some paprika to their diet. Which one will I experiment on? *rubs hands and laughs maniacally*
  16. Ouch! You're lucky it's just a bruise. 'Some people will do anything for attention' - Obstacle Snr. (my Dad) :slfg:
  17. +1 - I'd recommend doing 100-150L at a time 1-2 times a week while you've still got the problem.
  18. Maybe some stainless mesh? I know it's not the best option to have metal in the tank but if you're going to have any it might as well be stainless The trick would be to find the right model of stainless (the number relates to the type of stainless it is) and maybe match the type to the stainless heaters/heater covers that are out there as they clearly work fine in aquariums.
  19. Although - my crypts are doing ok under my MH lamps. They're extremely temperamental though so I wouldn't be surprised if they one day decided to melt off and never come back.
  20. Sew it onto a polystyrene ball with fishing line? If you could find a fine enough net you could use that to hold it on.
  21. I purchased a second hand co2 fire extinguisher off trademe and an Up Aqua co2 regulator with solenoid off ebay and I'm all set. Cost less that $200 all up and should last a few months at 2-4bps before needing re-filling. I can highly recommend going down this route if you can find a second hand extinguisher in test.
  22. Took Harry (my 7 yr old son) out to see Josh to sell him his "long stripe" (SAE) so he could buy himself a lyre tail guppy. Went to HFF on the way home and picked up 2 lovely males. Interestingly they said they're not stocking female guppies as a standard any more because people don't want them. Oh well, luckily I've got a tank with a bunch of females in it already so we'll choose the new males some nice partners and hope for some cool colours to come out with lyre tails
  23. Interesting - I've seen bloodworms go straight through a few fish and come out hardly digested. I guess that explains it. My angels for instance don't care for them but the rest of the tank can't get enough.
  24. oh, reading between the lines it looks like http://www.aquaworld.co.nz might have some in stock. I'll pop in there and see what's on offer if I get the chance.
  25. No, no idea. I'm going to Mt Roskill tomorrow so I guess I won't see any there. The pics of the new imports were from a Chch store weren't they? I'll have to go look in the commercial trade section again I think...
