  1. That would only help if the tube to the sump was blocked.. If the siphon stopped you would still be in trouble... A second overflow (as ryanjury suggested) would be the safest. If you have seen the commercial ones they tend to have an air release tap thingy at the top of the upside down U so you could suck out any air that gathers up there. You have black corner bits there and can't see trapped air. I have even seen ones on ebay that have a tiny waterpump that continuously pumps water (and any airbubbles that forms there) from the top of the U back down into the tank (much smaller flow than the syphon of course) just to prevent the syphon from accidentally stopping and overflowing the tank. I would like to follow how this one goes though. Nice work!
  2. Nice! What temp are you keeping them at? do they seem to be growing?
  3. Agree, nice! This cichlid is high up on my long "to keep" fish list
  4. In my LFS back in Denmark when I was a kid they always used these to put the fish in as they caught them so you could see the ones you were getting and if happy then bag them...
  5. Nice rock pile! And nice setup
  6. I would think this is a very inefficient way of heating a fishtank.. especially compared to a in tank/in sump heater where all the energy goes directly into the water. A heat pad would have to be insulated under it unless you are also wanting to heat up the room. And what is the heat gradient like through your substrate Alanmin? Doesn't the substrate get very hot at the bottom and what about the plants roots? Personally I think it's a terrible idea trying to heat a fishtank from the outside through the substrate.
  7. Dude if your pH is so low that your test kit is maxing out and you have to start adding coral to get the pH up again you are putting too much CO2 in there in the first place! Make a new batch. This time with 1/2 tsp yeast. Don't add coral. Problem solved.
  8. I found that 1 tsp yeast (as you wrote in your other thread) was too much.. The many yeast cells consumes the sugar very fast causing lots of co2 and a rapid drop in pH.. If you use less yeast (perhaps 1/2 or 1/4 tsp) then the yeast will still comsume all the sugar but over a longer time and your pH spike will be smaller. So that's how it works, you just have to experiment a bit to what size bottle and what amounts works best for your tank size/situation.
  9. I use a 4L bottle filled with: 2 cups sugar 1/4 tsp yeast 3L water Begins bubbling within a few hours and lasts around 3 weeks averaging 1.5 bubble/sec I reckon Not sure if thats a little or a lot but thats what I do and plants seem to be doing good (so does the green algea as well though)
  10. Are you kidding? Even I got that one and I'm from Denmark Nice shots Simon... When I was there the ocean was a washing machine from hell and I nearly vomitted after discovering a half rotten seal just beside where I was digging out a nice piece of driftwood!
  11. Hi Fishie.. Very nice looking tank.. I am very jealous.. I'm curious about that uneveness in the steel. Can you explain that more and could you not solve that by adding a sheet of polystyrene under that tank? Cheers oh and very nice pleco!
  12. Amazing how many people down here in NZ thinks that "Europe" is this one place where everything is the same within EUROPE!! Just reading this old thread and didn't see anyone mention the way I do water changes: I have converted an old gravel siphon to a pipe filled with activated carbon (with garden hose connectors etc.) I just hook this on to the garden tap and fill tanks straight from there with no water ager. Theory being that the carbon wil absorb any chlorine in the water.
  13. Yes they are.. just not from the big lakes... I'd make a sump for that size tank as well... good luck
  14. Ryan I guess by stripping you mean catching them and opening their mouth to let the young out? I remember doing that years ago with some G. steindachneri. But they were much smaller fish.. I think my Geo couple are nearly full size now and the thought of handling them scares me a bit.. as in a whole bunch of chaotic splashing and fry flying everywhere. I will consider it though thanks!
  15. Well I've gone through several spawns now where they do manage to fertilize a small number of eggs through the divider in that tank and all is well for a few days where both parents participate in parenting until out of nowhere one of them gets a taste for geo baby an swallows hard and then they are gone... So the next time I get a decent size batch and I see them swimming around I'll rush in there and fish out the babies before the parents know what hit them, hehe.
  16. That's why I shared it! I always think the "breeder" nets you buy are WAY too small.
  17. This is certainly not rocket science but thought I'd share.. Bought a plastic toy box at the warehouse for $2, cut out the sides and siliconed plastic flyscreen mesh inside all 4 sides. Then I'll just hang it over the side of the tank with some string and weights.. Hoping it will be a good place to keep a bunch of Geophagus babies until they are big enough for their own tank. (that is of course if my Geos finally have a succesful batch.)
  18. Beagles! Not too big and very friendly with kids
  19. Good idea.. I think a flok of hatchetfish would do well in there (with lids on of course) Cardinals are nice but that's what everyone is doing! (incl. myself) A small army of corys would be good.. perhaps Panda or Bandits to stand out a bit against the substrate Edit: forgot to say NICE TANK!
  20. Setting up a monster pond/tank to "rescue" some pacus??? Just eat them!
  21. +1 Also white sand will go green/brown very quickly if you don't have any "snifflers" around to constantly turn it over.. not sure if Clown Loaches do that?
