  3. Oh ! Happy Birthday / Bon anniversaire Phoenix ! Thai dessert. Spice free guaranteed
  4. Thanks Zev, I didn't know it Thanks Alan for the explanation too I just saw some pictures of Kaikoura. Beautiful 8) Look at this one : extravehicular activity on the International Space Station above NZ (Christchurch, Kaikoura, Wellington) - http://www.nasa.gov/images/content/165304main_image_feature_719_ys_full.jpg
  5. When I've been discovering NZ (on the net) last year, I read all the travellers'blogs I could find. They were all very surprised (pleasantly) how kiwi people are mainly generous and hospitable. You are one of those, Barrie. Sometimes, I'm very pessimistic about human kind. But when I read things like that, It just puts a smile on my face like a sun in the sky. Alan, "kaimoana" means seafood ? What does 021 means ?....
  6. + 1000 Nothing to add. I'm just admiring your attitude. If I wanted to have a definition of humanity, I got it there.
  7. I tried to find all the advices I could through the net about quake proofing the tanks. what you wrote is right Caryl. Jennifer wrote : "During the quake it seems the house moved very strongly in an east to west direction." That's why it's not good to strap and stand the tanks to a wall because the walls move. So it's gonna break the glass. But it seems possible to strap the stand to the wall it it's not done too rigid. Here's what I read from an aquarist who lives in California if I remember well : Another idea : If some of you know a structural engineer, ask her/him what does she/he think about it. I'm gonna find one by my side. Acrylic tanks seems to be a solution too. And according to me, may be it's a good idea to have some plastic containers (like rubbish pins or the ones we use for the rain, I forgot the exact name, sorry) of 80 / 200 liters if it's possible. In order to put fishes in it if a tank smash. Another problem is how to do water changes if the sewage pipe breaks ? Stock water in jerrycans just in case ?
  8. # Reference Number: 3367832 # NZST: Tue, Sep 7 2010 3:24 am # Magnitude: 5.4 # Depth: 15 km # Details: 20 km south-east of Darfield 3 aftershocks since your last post...
  9. I read about your situation Jennifer Would it be possible to use square or round plastic containers or rubbish bins and put all your fishes in them, with filters and heater ? I did it when I got some troubles with one of my tanks some years ago. [edit] I mean just put the rest of tanks empty on the floor and fishes in plastic containers if you got some, until there are no aftershocks anymore ?
  10. Read there are also heavy winds with severe gales gusting to 130 kmh on Canterbury
  11. I just heard about the earthquake and saw half collapsed buildings, some streets under water... Hope everyone's OK All my thoughts with you.
  12. Sir Patrick Moores' great. I like Hubert Reeves too (astrophysicist). My father had a huge book, about 50 x 30 cm I was fond of : the Atlas of the Universe. About solar system, galaxies, nebulae, etc. It's impressed me for life. Now, I'm reading a study about food additives. All thoses stuffes used in mass-produced food as preservatives, antioxidants, emulsifiers, those that add flavour, colour, texture etc. Pretty interesting and... SCARY Now, I understand the real meaning of "junk food" because some of those additives could affect our behaviour. I can't tell you which book it is, because only available in french and spanish for the moment. A guide not to poison you any more indeed. But the author, Corinne Gouget, talks about someone who did the same kind of studies, about food additives, in Australia : Sue DENGATE. So you can find more informations if you're interested by. Actually, this subject deserves it's own topic, in view of its importance for our health. There's a vid about Sue DENGATE's study : "Children are now "walking test tubes" due to dozens of nasty food additives and colorings. Causing serious bad physical and emotional problems. See the startling improvement in these school kids in just two weeks when food colorings and additives were removed"
  13. Me too. Same thing with writing. It's a kind of vital importance for me I love words. To write in another language is pretty exciting. I love it ! It's like to be born once again. When I was kid, one of my favourite book was the dictionnary. I could stay for hours on the carpet, with that big book as ship There were a lot of unknown words for me and I loved "to travel" through words and pages. Now, I do it again, but in english. Oh I like this feeling...
  14. I got tonnes of books for kids. I kept my own ones, when I was a child. Because when I opened again these books, I could remember things, feelings, the way I saw the world at this age... you know, all thoses perfumes of chilhood. It helps me a lot cause I love to wrote some stories to my friends' kids. I wish I could write a novel one day or another. In France, there's a publisher named "Nord-Sud" (North-South in english). Real great stories for kids with beautiful drawings. From Aldous Huxley ? Visionary...
  15. Sorry : Terry who ?... Well, I didn't know yet this author. He seems great. So I just ordered "The carpet". It's about a people who lives in a carpet. I used to imagine stuff like that when I was a kid. Terry Pratchett seems to have a pretty good sense of humor too (“A marriage is always made up of two people who are prepared to swear that only the other one snores.” ). I read the exceptional Dune About SF, do you know Nancy Kress ? Last year, I read "The Probability Trilogy" from her. I'm not a hard science lover, but I've liked this story.
  16. Same thing for me. But talking about Jules Verne with Phoenix has reawakened my hunger for books ! :bounce: I read IT and Bag of bones too. Great stories
  17. Jason Mraz - I'm Yours (Live in Korea) Live high (from his album) Live high, live high, Live mighty. Live righteously, Oh... Takin' it easy. (song inspired by the space craft Voyager, launched in 1977, the year of his birth)
  18. Why do you need assassin snail ? Much too snails in your tank ? Try to determine the reasons of this unbalanced situation.
  19. The Talisman by Stephen King and Peter Straub It's about paralell realities overlaying one another : what happens in one of them affects the others as well. An infinitely moving story, opening magical and metaphorical horizons. "In a run-down amusement park on a desolate beach in New Hampshire, thirteen-year-old Jack Sawyer is about to learn some hard truths—about his father’s death, about why he and his mother are on the run from his sinister uncle Morgan, and about the real nature of the mysterious realm Jack once called the Daydreams. Now, with help from his newfound friend Speedy Parker, this young man will reclaim his identity as Travellin Jack and make his first foray back into the Territories to retrieve the magical Talisman, an object of immense cosmic significance. Yet even more important to Jack, the Talisman holds the key to saving his mother’s life. In the Terrorities, where monsters lurk, evil watches, and an unbelievably precious prize awaits, Jack embarks upon a desperate quest to fulfill a destiny he never sought but cannot escape." (publisher's description). We are scared by the sinister Uncle Morgan, we laugh and we cry with "travellin' Jack" and his friend, an incredible werewolf... One of the best books I have ever read. According to me, a real masterpiece I read twice.
